Dolphins linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel says he saw something on film in pick-6 vs. Commanders

Van Ginkel did some tape study that prepared him for his pick-six vs. Commanders last week. It involves RT Andrew Wylie.

Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell threw his third interception that was returned for a touchdown in three weeks in last week’s 45-15 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

The pick-six was Howell’s fourth of the season.

Miami linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel intercepted Howell’s pass and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown. It would give the Dolphins an insurmountable 17-0 lead with just under one minute remaining in the first quarter.

Here’s the play:

This was just a weird play from the snap. Watch right tackle Andrew Wylie. Van Ginkel was clearly ready for this play, and as he explained afterward, there was something he saw Wylie do on film that led to the interception.

“It starts during the week in preparation, and [defensive coordinator] Vic [Fangio] puts in good play calls,” Van Ginkel said. “He does a good job explaining throughout the week what to expect in certain situations. It’s something that was kind of on my radar. When I saw the tackle [Andrew Wylie] kind of do his, he kind of does the same thing on wide receiver screens, so I kind of expected it. When it happened, I couldn’t believe it, and the rest was history.”

We aren’t sure what Van Ginkel saw from Wylie, but it’s clear from his quick reaction he knew what was coming.

Wylie has struggled in his first season as Washington’s right tackle. In addition to Van Ginkel’s interception, he gave Wylie fits coming off the edge, too.

It’s not uncommon for players and coaches to find an advantage during tape study. It goes back to excellent coaching. Those types of details are what Washington has been missing in recent seasons.

From Rock Valley to ‘Hard Knocks,’ Dolphins LB Andrew Van Ginkel has arrived

No. 43 was the star of “Hard Knocks” episode No. 3.

In 2019, the Miami Dolphins drafted a linebacker in the fifth round of the NFL draft. It was a draft in which the Dolphins were without second and fourth-round selections.

General manager Chris Grier started the process in the first round with a hit by the name of Christian Wilkins. Later in the draft, on the third day, Andrew Van Ginkel’s name was called.

The outside linebacker from Wisconsin was first a quarterback in high school in the small town of Rock Valley, Iowa before switching to defensive end at South Dakota, a Football Championship Subdivision school.

In what’s become a heart-warming and full-circle story, Van Ginkel has had a rollercoaster year, and that has nothing to do with an offensive touchdown celebration.

A touchdown scorer in his own right, with three in his 4.5 seasons as a pro, with one as recent as last Sunday against the Washington Commanders, Van Ginkel and his family were featured on HBO’s “Hard Knocks” show on Tuesday night.

Van Ginkel had a fine season in 2022 and has always made the most of his snaps on both defense as well as special teams. However, when pass-rusher Jaelan Phillips injured his Achilles against the Jets in Week 12, the door opened for Van Ginkel to be the guy to help Miami not lose ground or take a step back with the loss of a player as important as Phillips.

In the three games that Phillips missed with an injury earlier in the year, and before the Commanders game, the four sacks made by Van Ginkel this season all came in contests he was in for his fellow outside linebacker.

On Sunday, he played the game of his life, scoring a touchdown on an interception return, recording a pass defensed and hitting Commanders quarterback Sam Howell early in the game, which led to teammates Zach Sieler and Bradley Chubb getting credit for the joint sack.

It’s when Van Ginkel plays heavy snaps that the Dolphins have remarkably correlated success.  Miami is 9-1 during Van Ginkel’s career when he plays more than 80% of the defensive snaps in a game and 3-0 this season in these occurrences. Even further, when playing over 70%  of the snaps on defense in his career, they’re 16-6.

So far this season, Van Ginkel has 47 tackles, four sacks, 12 quarterback hits, seven tackles for loss and six passes defensed. He’s been tasked with inside linebacker duties throughout this season as well and has proven to be an overall defensive weapon for Miami, being all over the field in every capacity you can ask out of a linebacker.

As a pass-rusher, Van Ginkel has graded among the elite this year, and his pass-rushing prowess has been timed as one of if not the fastest to the quarterback on pressures in the entire league.

He’s done all of this while in another contract year, as he was last offseason.

Van Ginkel had the opportunity from several other teams over the winter to get a significant pay increase as well as a locked-down starting role. However, he chose to bet on himself and took a one-year deal from Miami. The Dolphins did what they needed to do to retain him and keep him around for this year, with hopes to talk again after a successful campaign.

The former Badger has held up his end of the bargain, and now it’s time for this 2019 draft pick to vest and for this linebacker to get what he financially deserves – a lucrative and multi-year deal with the Dolphins.

Van Ginkel’s success has even attracted the attention of super-agent Drew Rosenhaus. Earlier this year, the Miami-based agent signed Van Ginkel and is now the man to work his contract negotiations.

Following Tuesday’s “Hard Knocks” episode, which also featured Andrew’s wife, Samantha, and their two young children at their home, the stock has gone up for the versatile linebacker and his team at home. As shown in the episode, the Van Ginkels were high-school sweethearts, and their journey to the NFL has been in constant lock-step.

Following the momentum of this outstanding year he’s putting together, as well as the HBO crowd-pleaser, the Dolphins fan base is already clamoring to keep “Gink,” as he’s affectionately called by teammates and head coach Mike McDaniel, home.

As seen in the episode, McDaniel handed Van Ginkel a game ball, while using typical vocabulary that captured how much this linebacker means to his team, teammates and fans. The latter, of course, took to social media, as Dolphins fans were glowing with pride, as shown through posts across several platforms.

What resonated the most was the expression on Van Ginkel’s face when receiving that game ball. It was a look of joy, relief, belonging and, perhaps, a fight with happy tears building up.

Following the accolades, “Hard Knocks” captured and closed the episode with Andrew calling Samantha, as the Dolphins fan base watched with pride and happiness, almost as much as the Van Ginkels themselves.

From Rock Valley, Iowa to Hard Rock Stadium and now “Hard Knocks,” it’s official – Andrew Van Ginkel is a hit.

Best moments from third episode of Dolphins ‘Hard Knocks’

Here’s what we saw in the third episode of “Hard Knocks.”

The Miami Dolphins have been on a roll to start this season, as they’ve compiled a 9-3 record through the first 13 weeks of the season.

And, now, they have even more attention on them, as they’re the focus of this year’s edition of the in-season version of “Hard Knocks” on HBO and Max.

The third episode of the season aired on Tuesday night with more to follow weekly.

Here are some of the best moments from episode No. 3 (some are NSFW):

Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel comments on LB Andrew Van Ginkel’s pick-6

Preparation paid off for the LB.

Miami Dolphins linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel had a phenomenal, momentum-shifting interception return for a touchdown against the Washington Commanders on Sunday.

Van Ginkel read the screen pass perfectly, intercepting Washington quarterback Sam Howell and taking it the rest of the way for the score, putting the Dolphins up 17-0.

Van Ginkel had a lot of eyes on him coming into this game considering the injury to Jaelan Phillips a week ago against the New York Jets. Van Ginkel was trusted to return to the edge where he had some success early in the season, and he finished the game with five tackles, two passes defensed and two quarterback hits in addition to his touchdown.

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel spoke about Van Ginkel’s pick-6, citing it as a result of preparation in practice.

“My favorite part of that play is that it’s not just showing up on Sunday,” said McDaniel. “That was stuff we saw in practice.”

Van Ginkel has been a pleasant surprise for the Miami defense in 2023, as he’s been a perfect fit for Vic Fangio’s 3-4 scheme. It’ll be an interesting offseason storyline with him as an unrestricted free agent.

Studs and duds from Dolphins’ Week 13 victory over Commanders

Who deserves credit, and who deserves criticism for their performances?

The Miami Dolphins defeated the Washington Commanders 45-15 at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland on Sunday.

Mike McDaniel’s team did just about everything they needed to do in Week 13 to improve to 9-3, even though they had a few starters leave the game with injuries.

As we do after every game, let’s take a look at some of those who deserve credit and some who deserve criticism for their performances against the Commanders.

Sam Howell’s atrocious pick-6 vs. Dolphins shows why his NFL-leading passing yards are so empty

The stats say Sam Howell is good. The eye test is a different story.

Entering Sunday’s battle with the Miami Dolphins, Sam Howell — yes, the very same Washington Commanders quarterback — was the NFL’s leader in passing yards with 3,339. But questions remained about Howell’s viability as a franchise quarterback and whether his gaudy numbers were kind of … empty calories? Yeah, let’s say that.

Howell’s awful start against Miami did little to quell these concerns.

After they punted on their first three possessions, Howell tried to launch a simple screen to receiver Jahan Dotson. The only problem was that Dolphins defender Andrew Van Ginkel read the sequence so perfectly that Howell threw it right to him for a backbreaking pick-six.

It’s unquestionably one of the worst pick-sixes we’ve seen all NFL season:

Woof that is so brutal, especially for a struggling Commanders team that’s lost three straight games.

Howell has occasionally impressed at quarterback. He has the capacity to drop dimes, and his processing is more advanced than you’d think for a player with only 13 career starts. But atrocious reads like this and numbers like his 10.2 sack percentage (yes, sacks are a quarterback stat) say he still has so much work to do.

So, kudos to Howell for being at the top of the NFL in passing yards. For the time being, on a terrible Commanders team, they mostly mean nothing.

WATCH: Dolphins LB Andrew Van Ginkel records pick-6 vs. Commanders

The Dolphins now have defensive scores in back-to-back games.

The Miami Dolphins had a 10-point lead against the Washington Commanders with just over a minute remaining in the first quarter.

After an ugly offensive drive, Vic Fangio’s defensive took the field at Washington’s 38-yard line. And, on the first play of the Commanders’ possession, quarterback Sam Howell threw a ball right into the chest of Dolphins linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel, who was able to return it for a touchdown.

The touchdown, Miami’s second defensive score in as many weeks, gave the Dolphins a 17-0 lead with less than a minute to go in the first period.

4 Dolphins who need to step up against the Commanders

Here’s who needs to step up on Sunday.

The Miami Dolphins have won their first two games following the bye week, as they now gear up to face the Washington Commanders on the road in Week 13.

This is a game between two teams with much different narratives at this point in the season.

Miami is seeking to remain competitive for the number one seed in the AFC, while the Commanders traded away two key defensive linemen, Chase Young and Montez Sweat, at the deadline.

While a 4-8 record looks quite mediocre on paper, this is not a team the Dolphins can afford to overlook.

Washington has played the 10-1 Philadelphia Eagles competitively twice this season, as both games featured both teams scoring over 30 points, and one of the games went into overtime.

While the Commanders have been widely inconsistent, they’re a capable team with a talented offense coached by Ron Rivera.

In order to secure a decisive victory, there are a few players who’ll specifically need to step up to make it happen.

News, notes and nuggets heading into Dolphins vs. Commanders

Some tidbits for Sunday’s action.

The Miami Dolphins are heading to the nation’s capital this weekend to play the Washington Commanders on Sunday.

This will be Miami’s first trip to FedEx Field since 2015, as a victory on Sunday will move their record to 9-3 this season, something the Dolphins haven’t accomplished since 2001.

Miami leads the all-time series 8-5 in the regular season and each franchise beat the other in the Super Bowl.
