LPGA: Andrea Lee leads BMW by two in South Korea; World No. 1’s shocking struggles continue

“I’m just playing really carefree golf, and I’m really relaxed out there. Just having fun.”

Andrea Lee’s first time playing golf in South Korea couldn’t go better if she scripted it. Lee remains bogey-free after 36 holes at the BMW Ladies Championship where she leads by two at 12 under over longtime friend Lilia Vu, hotshot rookie Atthaya Thitikul and 16-year-old amateur Minsol Kim.

Lee, who birdied three of her last four holes, has missed only two greens and two fairways in her matching rounds of 66. The former Stanford star said she’s used to the hilly terrain of Oak Valley Country Club having grown up at Palos Verdes Golf Club in California.

“I think it just gave me so much confidence after that win in Portland,” she said, “and I’m just playing really carefree golf, and I’m really relaxed out there. Just having fun. I don’t feel the pressure anymore to get that first win. I feel comfortable being atop the leaderboards now, and you know, hopefully I can just keep it rolling.”

Lee, 24, saw her 91-year-old grandfather for the first time in three years this week and looks forward to having him come out this weekend.

“The Koreans, they love golf,” she said. “They are so passionate, emotional about it. So it’s great to feed off of their energy. They are definitely rooting for all the Korean players out here. I’m Korean-American, so I feel like they are rooting for me, too, and it’s nice to have that.”

Vu bounced back after her first bogey of the tournament on the 14th with an eagle on the par-5 15th. A prolific winner at UCLA, Vu finished third in Portland the week that Lee won and has six top-10 finishes this season. This is also her first time competing in South Korea, and she spent Friday alongside Lee and 2020 U.S. Women’s Open champion A Lim Kim.

“I mean, definitely a little bit of like an adjustment for me to get used to because (when) she would hit it pretty close, everyone would start yelling,” said Vu of the crowd’s reaction to Kim. “I hit a couple shots to three feet today. Maybe a half-clap from my parents. Yeah, so it’s kind of different, but it’s fun. They are very spirited here.”

There are a number of scenarios in which Thitikul will rise to No. 1 in the world this week. A victory would get her there. She can also finish as low as fourth and still climb to No. 1 if Jin Young Ko finishes solo 29th or worse and Minjee Lee does not win.

World No. 1 Ko opened with an 80 that included a 10 on the 18th hole. Friday wasn’t much better. A double-bogey and eight bogeys led Ko to shoot 79, one day after carding the worst round of her LPGA career. She did card an eagle on the 15th.

Ko hit seven fairways and 10 greens in the second round and is currently last in a field of 78. This marks Ko’s first event back since taking two months off to heal an injured left wrist.

Former Stanford star Andrea Lee lost her card last year, and then clawed her way back to win on the LPGA in Portland

Andrea Lee broke down in tears during her post-round interview as she dedicated the victory to her late grandpa.

Andrea Lee’s very fine drive on the 17th hole came to rest in a divot. There’s never a good time to find a divot, but this was an especially terrible time, given that Lee was vying for her first LPGA title on the 71st hole of the AmazingCre Portland Classic.

She tugged her 6-iron to the left and ultimately got up-and-down with a beautiful bunker shot, as if the divot never happened.

The former No. 1-ranked amateur lost her tour card last season and played on the Epson Tour earlier this year. Rock bottom came last April when she felt so lost on the golf course that she wanted to withdraw and go home. She didn’t, of course, because Lee is a fighter. And that bad luck divot wasn’t going to stop her either.

“It’s more than anything I could have imagined,” said Lee of her one-stroke victory in Portland. “I cannot believe it.”

Lee came into the final round with a share of the lead, but a pair of bogeys on Nos. 2 and 3 got her off to a sluggish start. She rebounded with three consecutive birdies on Nos. 5-7, and the former Stanford star joined a long list of players who had a chance late in the day at Columbia Edgewater.

Lee, a nine-time winner at Stanford, closed with a 6-under 66 to finish at 19 under and edge former Miami player Daniela Darquea by one stroke. Darquea came into the week 108th on the CME points list with only four starts on the LPGA this season, including the U.S. Women’s Open and Dow team event. She’d played most of the season on the Epson Tour, but made the most of her time in Portland, birdieing the last three holes to finish second.

Similarly, Esther Henseleit revitalized her season with a share of third. The German player came into the week 103rd on the CME list. The top 100 keep their card for the 2023 season.

Like Lee, UCLA’s Lilia Vu won a bunch in the Pac-12 and spent time as the top-ranked amateur in the world. Both are on the short list as rookie for next year’s U.S. Solheim Cup team. Vu joined Henseleit in a share of third with Narin An, Hannah Green and Ayake Furue.

“Andrea played amazing,” said Vu. “She literally hits every single shot like a foot, and I just knew like playing today, I’m playing with like the straightest hitters, and, me, I’m struggling all week to find a fairway.”

Sweden’s Maja Stark made her debut as an LPGA member this week and finished solo eighth. The Ladies European Tour star won the ISPS Handa World Invitational to earn LPGA membership. Stark was less than satisfied with her closing 66.

“My driver was kind of everywhere,” said Stark. “Pulled mostly left, but and then my irons weren’t very good and my wedges have been terrible all week.

“So I’m just happy that I managed to go under par to be honest.”

Lee broke down in tears during her post-round interview with the Golf Channel as she dedicated the victory to her late grandfather, who died last November. He always called her a champion.

“My grandpa loved golf,” said Lee. “I’m kind of sad that I didn’t get to play more rounds of golf with him or just go to the range together, but we were close and he helped us out a lot when we were in tough times during junior golf. It’s a very expensive sport and he was a huge supporter and he was my No. 1 fan besides my mom and dad.”

She was also emotional about the loss of her dog, Toki, who died earlier this year and would’ve turned 14 yesterday.

Lee melted even more in the arms of her father, who told her he was proud.

“My dad is not a man of many words,” said Lee, “so it was just a nice moment to have with him.”

Her next big goal: win a major.

6 biggest takeaways from UFC on ESPN 36: Blachowicz’s title hopes, Rakic’s injury, Kelley’s cornering

Tony Kelley’s controversial cornering, Aleksandar Rakic’s injury and Jan Blachowicz’s win highlight our UFC on ESPN 36 takeaways.

What mattered most at UFC on ESPN 36 in Las Vegas? Here are a few post-fight musings…

Fighters criticize Tony Kelley’s ‘dirty f*cking Brazilians’ comment while cornering Andrea Lee at UFC on ESPN 36

Andrea Lee’s head cornerman at UFC on ESPN 36 on Saturday, Tony Kelley, came under fire for comments he made about Brazil’s Viviane Araujo.

[autotag]Andrea Lee[/autotag]’s head cornerman at UFC on ESPN 36 on Saturday, [autotag]Tony Kelley[/autotag], came under fire for comments he made during her women’s flyweight bout with [autotag]Viviane Araujo[/autotag].

Following the first round of the matchup at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, in which Lee (13-6 MMA, 5-4 UFC) started strong with a huge punch and blistering head kick, she went back to her corner and sat on the stool. Kelley, a UFC bantamweight who is scheduled to fight Adrian Yanez on June 18, made a controversial statement to his athlete.

“That’s what they’re going to do – they’re dirty f*cking Brazilians,” Kelley told Lee. “They’re going to f*cking cheat like that.”

Araujo (11-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC) rallied back to secure a unanimous decision win, including a lopsided 10-8 round. She could not react after the win backstage because she transported to a local hospital and did not speak with the media after the fight.

Kelly’s comments were picked up on the international live feed and quickly spread across social media. The feedback, not surprisingly, was not positive. Check out how several notable fighters reacted.

UFC finalizing Viviane Araujo vs. Andrea Lee for May 14 event

Another key women’s flyweight matchup is headed to the UFC lineup on May 14.

A women’s flyweight fight between two top UFC contenders is in the works.

The promotion is finalizing a bout between [autotag]Viviane Araujo[/autotag] (10-3 MMA, 4-2 UFC) and [autotag]Andrea Lee[/autotag] (13-5 MMA, 5-3 UFC) for the UFC Fight Night event May 14, which does not currently have a location or venue. Verbal agreements are in place with contracts expected in the coming days.

Two people with knowledge of the targeted booking recently informed MMA Junkie but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Araujo, 35, was scheduled to fight Saturday vs. Alexa Grasso at UFC 270 but suffered an injury and withdrew from the fight. She most recently competed at UFC 262 in May when she lost a unanimous decision to perennial contender Katlyn Chookagian. Prior to that defeat, Araujo won back-to-back fights against Roxanne Modafferi and Montana De La Rosa – both via unanimous decision.

Lee, 32, rides back-to-back victories into her matchup against Araujo. Following three consecutive losses stemming from late 2019 through 2020, Lee submitted Antonina Shevchenko and stopped Cynthia Calvillo via corner stoppage.

With the addition, the UFC Fight Night lineup for May 14 includes:

  • Lauren Murphy vs. Miesha Tate
  • Viviane Araujo vs. Andrea Lee

UFC Fight Night 197 results: Andrea Lee outpaces Cynthia Calvillo leading to second-round corner stoppage TKO

Andrea Lee picked up a corner stoppage TKO over Cynthia Calvillo on Saturday.

[autotag]Andrea Lee[/autotag] was too much for Cynthia Calvillo to handle on Saturday at UFC Fight Night 197.

From the moment the fight began, the two flyweight fighters went at it with high striking volume. Both Lee (13-5 MMA, 5-3 UFC) and Calvillo (9-4-1 MMA, 6-4-1 UFC) landed often in the opening round, making for an exciting five minutes of action on the prelims at the UFC Apex.

Throughout the second round, Lee’s precision began to take control of the fight as she started to pull away offensively. The longer fighter was able to work behind her jab and keep Calvillo just out of range, which led to accumulating damage to the face of Calvillo.

At the conclusion of the second round, the swelling around Calvillo’s right eye was apparent. After assessing the damage between rounds, the stoppage would come as Calvillo’s corner asked referee Mark Smith to call a stop to the contest.

“One of us had to take an ‘L’, and I just didn’t want it to be me,” Lee said during her post-fight interview with Michael Bisping. She also showed concern for Calvillo’s injuries, wishing that nothing serious occurred.

Lee makes it two straight wins with Saturday’s performance, which followed her second-round submission finish of Antonina Shevchenko at UFC 262 in May.

Up-to-the-minute results of UFC Fight Night 197 include:

  • Andrea Lee def. Cynthia Calvillo via TKO (corner stoppage) – Round 2, 5:00
  • Sean Woodson def. Collin Anglin via TKO (punches) – Round 1, 4:30
  • Cortney Casey def. Liana Jojua via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
  • Rafael Alves def. Marc Diakiese via submission (guillotine choke) – Round 1, 1:48
  • Da Un Jung def. Kennedy Nzechukwu via knockout (elbows) – Round 1, 3:04

UFC targets Andrea Lee vs. Jessica Eye for Fight Night event on Nov. 13

UFC is targeting an exciting flyweight matchup between Jessica Eye and Andrea Lee.

An exciting women’s flyweight matchup is in the works for UFC Fight Night on Nov. 13.

[autotag]Andrea Lee[/autotag] is set to meet [autotag]Jessica Eye[/autotag] at a Fight Night event that does not yet have a confirmed venue or location.

Multiple sources with knowledge of the matchup informed MMA Junkie of the booking on Thursday but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Lee (12-5 MMA, 4-3 UFC) will be looking to make it back-to-back wins for the first time since 2019. The former title challenger will be looking to snap a three-fight unanimous decision losing streak, which included outings that did not go her way against Joanne Calderwood and Cynthia Calvillo. A decision victory against Viviane Araujo at UFC 245 preceded her recent skid.

With the addition, the UFC Fight Night lineup for Nov. 13 include:

  • Max Holloway vs. Yair Rodriguez
  • Philip Lins vs. Ovince Saint Preux
