Andre Iguodala: Anthony Davis was an unsung hero for Team USA

Don’t underestimate Anthony Davis’ role in helping Team USA men’s basketball win the gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics.

In the wake of Team USA men’s basketball winning a fifth straight Olympic gold medal, a lot of the credit has gone to its trio of aging superstars: Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and MVP LeBron James.

James had a triple-double in the semifinal round to help rescue the squad after it fell behind by as many as 17 points to Serbia. He then had 14 points, 10 assists and six rebounds on Saturday to help it outlast France to clinch the gold.

But this iteration of Team USA had stars everywhere, including deep on its bench. Los Angeles Lakers superstar big man played a key role off the bench, and Andre Iguodala, who won a gold medal with Team USA in 2012, called Davis, along with the Phoenix Suns’ Devin Booker, an unsung hero for the United States.

Davis had eight points, nine rebounds, four blocked shots and two steals in 20 minutes versus France on Saturday. Throughout the Olympics, he selflessly embraced a role in which he almost disregarded his own offense and focused primarily on defense and rebounding.

As a result, he now owns two Olympic gold medals, and he could very well earn a third one in the 2028 Summer Games, which will be held in Los Angeles.

NBA draft rewind: Sixers select Andre Iguodala No. 9 overall in 2004

The Philadelphia 76ers selected Andre Iguodala with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2004 NBA draft.

The Philadelphia 76ers had a down season in 2003-04. They added Glenn Robinson in the 2003 offseason with the expectations that he and Allen Iverson would take the Sixers forward, but instead, it was an awkward fit and Robinson only played 42 games with Iverson playing 48.

Philadelphia finished 33-49 and was in the lottery in the 2004 NBA draft. With the No. 9 overall pick, the Sixers selected Andre Iguodala out of Arizona.

Iguodala was a contributor right away starting next to Iverson and Chris Webber in helping the Sixers get back to the playoffs. He averaged 9.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.0 assists with 1.7 steals as a rookie before Philadelphia was defeated in five games by the defending champion Detroit Pistons.

Overall, Iguodala averaged 15.3 points 4.9 assists, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.7 steals across eight seasons with the Sixers. He was named an All-Star in 2012 before being sent to the Denver Nuggets in the 4-team blockbuster trade that sent Andrew Bynum to Philadelphia.

Iguodala then went on to win four championships with the Golden State Warriors–winning finals MVP in 2015– and also made the finals with the Miami Heat in 2020.

Watch: Bob Myers jokingly references LeBron James’ famous chase down block vs. Warriors during Lakers vs. Nuggets broadcast

“I remember he did that one time in Oakland.”

Since leaving the Golden State Warriors front office, Bob Myers has joined ESPN’s broadcast team. For the first time, Golden State’s former general manager is serving as an analysts for NBA playoff games.

On Saturday, Myers found himself in a familiar situation while on the call for Game 4 of the series between the Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers. During the game, LeBron James chased down Jamal Murray for an emphatic block at the rim.

When talking about the block, Myers jokingly referenced James’ famous block in the fourth quarter of Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals against Andre Iguodala and the Warriors.

That’s more impressive to me than the scoring. Chasing down a blocked shot. I remember when he did that one time in Oakland, but I didn’t like it, Dave.

Via @ESPN on X:

James finished with 30 points on 14-of-23 shooting from the field with five rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block as the Lakers finally secured a much-needed win over the Nuggets, 119-108.

Game 5 between the Lakers and Nuggets is Monday at 7 p.m. PT in Denver. The Nuggets hold a 3-1 series lead over the Nuggets in the first-round playoff series.

Even though the Chiefs have developed a star-studded fanbase, especially with all of their success over the past several seasons, the 49ers have a loyal following of celebrities who root for them as well.

While many of the 49ers faithful hail from the Bay Area in California, there are folks from all over the world with wildly impressive careers who plan to root for San Francisco in the Super Bowl against Kansas City.

Here are some of the most notable names cheering for the 49ers:

Allen Iverson reacts to Andre Iguodala’s retirement from basketball

Philadelphia 76ers icon Allen Iverson reacts to Andre Iguodala retiring from basketball.

Former Philadelphia 76ers star Andre Iguodala announced his retirement on Friday after 19 seasons in the league. He spent his first eight seasons in Philadelphia, which drafted him with the ninth pick in the 2004 NBA draft. He was an All-Star with the Sixers in 2012.

Iguodala was traded to the Denver Nuggets in the Andrew Bynum mega-deal before he joined the Golden State Warriors. He won four championships in Golden State and he was named the 2015 finals MVP.

During some of his days with the Sixers, Iguodala played with franchise icon Allen Iverson. The two played together for parts of three seasons and they built a bit of a relationship on the floor.

Iverson took to Instagram to give his love to Iguodala on his retirement. He even mentioned a Hall of Fame possibility.

Iverson and Iguodala guided the Sixers to the playoffs in 2005 before they were upended by the Detroit Pistons in the first round. Who knows what they could have accomplished if Iverson was not traded to the Nuggets early in Iguodala’s second season?

Andre Iguodala backs Warriors to contend for another championship

The recently-retired forward believes the Golden State Warriors could win a fifth NBA championship.

Andre Iguodala won four championships with the Golden State Warriors. The recently retired forward understands the talent and competitiveness level within the Warriors locker room. As such, Iguodala wouldn’t be surprised to see Steph Curry lead his team to a fifth NBA championship in the upcoming season.

Iguodala’s comments came during an appearance on ESPN’s first take. The former Warrior noted how you can never count out a team that boasts a superstar leader like Curry. Iguodala also pointed toward the addition of Chris Paul as another reason his former team could add another banner to their dynasty’s resume.

“When you got Steph Curry on your team, you always have a chance,” Iguodala said. “You can never count them out. It’s him or LeBron: you can’t count them out until it’s over. And I think CP is going to be an addition to that team. Steve Kerr spoke to it already in terms of the leadership he’s brought to the team. Turnovers have been a problem for the Warriors historically, and CP is one of those guys that can settle them down.”

Golden State enjoyed a busy offseason. Mike Dunleavy acquired multiple veterans to improve the balance within the roster. Recent draft picks Brandin Podziemski and Trayce Jackson-Davis both appear to be steals.

If the Warriors can remain healthy throughout the season, and Kerr can get everybody pulling in the same direction, there could be a strong push for an NBA Finals appearance once the postseason begins.

Steve Kerr addresses Andre Iguodala retirement

Steve Kerr discussed the retirement of four-time Golden State Warriors champion Andre Iguodala.

On October 20, Andre Iguodala announced his retirement. Iguodala helped the Golden State Warriors win four NBA championships. He spent eight years with the Golden State, between 2013 and 2019 and 2021 and 2023. Iguodala was the perfect three-and-d wing alongside the All-Star core of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green.

Steve Kerr has shared his thoughts on Iguodala’s career, specifically his time with the Warriors. Golden State’s head coach credited the retiring forward as “one of the main reasons” for his team’s four championship banners. Kerr also praised Iguodala for sacrificing for the team’s good by accepting a bench role.

“He’s one of the main reasons we’ve got those four banners hanging up,” Kerr said ahead of his team’s preseason loss to the San Antonio Spurs. “He was a foundational piece of what has been one of the great runs in NBA history. In many ways, Andre set the tone for the whole thing by agreeing to come off the bench in 2014-15, really sacrificing and making the move that unlocked the team…It allowed Harrison (Barnes) to thrive, strengthened our bench, but also set a tone for unselfishness and a team-first mentality. That was ultimately rewarded with a title and Finals MVP for Andre when we put him back in the starting lineup.”

Iguodala will likely turn more of his focus toward his “Point Forward” podcast with Evan Turner. We may also see Iguodala make the occasional media appearance. The four-time NBA champion had an incredible 19-year career in the NBA and will undoubtedly be successful at whatever is next for him.

If the Warriors win the 2024 NBA championship, it will be the first time in the Curry era that Iguodala wasn’t part of the rotation. That’s how important his contributions were.

Former Sixers star Andre Iguodala announces retirement after 19 seasons

Former Philadelphia 76ers star Andre Iguodala announces his retirement from the NBA after 19 seasons.

Retirement catches up with everybody in the NBA. Eventually, players realize they don’t have any more to give to the game, and the time is right to call it a career.

On Friday morning, former Philadelphia 76ers star Andre Iguodala announced it was his time after 19 seasons in the league. Iguodala was selected with the ninth pick in the 2004 NBA draft. He played eight seasons for Philadelphia and was selected an All-Star in 2012. He averaged 15.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.7 steals while a member of the Sixers.

He was sent to the Denver Nuggets in the big Andrew Bynum deal before joining the Golden State Warriors where he won four titles and was named finals MVP in 2015.

Iguodala will be remembered for doing it all on the court. He was able to score, play elite defense and make plays for others. He is probably best remembered in Philadelphia for sinking two free throws to help the eighth-seeded Sixers upset the top-seeded Chicago Bulls in the 2012 playoffs.

Evan Turner, Andre Iguodala discuss their dissatisfaction with Sixers

Former Philadelphia 76ers forwards Andre Iguodala and Evan Turner discuss their dissatisfaction with the organization from the past.

Former Philadelphia 76ers forwards Evan Turner and Andre Iguodala had a solid time as members of the Sixers. Turner averaged 11.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists while in Philadelphia and Iguodala averaged 15.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.9 assists while being named an All-Star in 2012.

With that being said, the team didn’t have much success. Iguodala and Turner both made the playoffs during their time in Philadelphia, but they both had early exits. The furthest both players ever got was Round 2 while in Philadelphia.

Both players hopped on “The Old Man and the Three” and they discussed their dissatisfaction in Philadelphia with the lack of success under the older regime. Turner also touched on his experience with “The Process” era under former GM Sam Hinkie.
