UNC football expected to lose former four-star WR to transfer portal

The UNC football program will lose a former four-star wide receiver to the transfer portal.

As college football hits championship weekend, the transfer portal continues to be very active. And on Saturday, another player on the offensive side of the football is entering the portal.

Per Hayes Fawcett of On3, wide receiver Andre Greene Jr. is expected to enter the transfer portal in the coming days. It’s the latest player on North Carolina’s roster to opt to enter the portal as they have lost a handful of players already.

Greene Jr. was a four-star recruit who committed to North Carolina with a total of 58 offers. He picked UNC over ACC rival Clemson, giving the Tar Heels a big win on the recruiting trail.

He appeared in five games as a true freshman in 2022 and made a start in UNC’s bowl game against Oregon, catching a touchdown pass. But in 2023, Greene Jr. found himself buried on the depth chart with just 2 receptions for 17 yards.

UNC football coaches hint wide receiver is ready to breakout

UNC football coaches believe this wide receiver is ready to breakout for the Tar Heels this season.

With Tez Walker not being eligible this season, the North Carolina Tar Heels lost a big target on offense for quarterback Drake Maye. The Tar Heels do still have capable wide receivers but they are hoping someone else steps up to help complement Nate McCollum and Kobe Paysour.

And that player could be Andre Greene Jr.

The redshirt freshman saw limited action last season as UNC did have Josh Downs and Antoine Green as the top targets. So far, Greene Jr. has been quiet this year but coaches feel like he’s ready to break out.

During Monday’s media availability, offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey told reporters that he believes Greene Jr. is getting closer to breaking out and that his time is coming:

Head coach Mack Brown echoed similar thoughts, saying Greene Jr. is getting better and is practicing better, which is a good sign. The receiver did have a shot at a deep ball from Maye last week but it was not a completion.

If Greene can find a way to be a big contributor this season, it would be a big bonus for the offense. And let’s hope he can find that breakout sooner than later.

A top Clemson target in the 2022 class committed elsewhere Wednesday evening.

Richmond (Va.) St. Christopher’s School four-star wide receiver Andre Greene Jr. announced his commitment to North Carolina, choosing the Tar Heels over the Tigers as well as Georgia.

Greene (6-3, 180) is ranked as high as the No. 5 wide receiver and No. 36 overall prospect in the 2022 class by Rivals. According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, he is the No. 9 wideout and No. 71 overall prospect in the class.

After previously visiting Clemson for the Dabo Swinney Camp in June and the All In Cookout in July, Greene returned to campus for an official visit this past weekend. While the Tigers appeared to make up some ground with Greene and certainly gave him something to think about during the official visit, it wasn’t enough for Clemson to inch past UNC, which entered Greene’s official visit weekend as the favorite.

With Greene’s commitment to Chapel Hill, it figures to open the door for Clemson to potentially offer Irmo (S.C.) Dutch Fork four-star wide receiver Antonio Williams.

Over the past month, Clemson has turned up their attention on Williams. Prior to Clemson’s 30-24 win over Louisville on Nov. 6, wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham spent that Friday night on the recruiting trail watching Williams from Dutch Fork’s sidelines, alongside Clemson freshman receiver and Dutch Fork product Will Taylor.

The latest on Four-star Greene on decision day

It’s decision day for a priority recruit in the 2022 class. St. Christopher’s School (Richmond, Va.) four-star wide receiver Andre Greene, Jr. is set to announce his college decision at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Greene, coming off a Clemson official …

It’s decision day for a priority recruit in the 2022 class.

St. Christopher’s School (Richmond, Va.) four-star wide receiver Andre Greene, Jr. is set to announce his college decision at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Greene, coming off a Clemson official visit this past weekend, will be deciding between the Tigers, North Carolina and Georgia.

Clemson appeared to have made up some ground this weekend, spending a significant amount of time with the talented receiver. We’ve spoken to multiple sources, who have detailed Greene’s experience, believing that he thoroughly enjoyed himself and felt like he was made a priority throughout the weekend.

Five-star quarterback Cade Klubnik and the rest of Clemson’s commits feel like they put a strong foot forward with Greene this weekend. Klubnik has been recruiting his close friend hard for a while now. He was parked right next to Greene in the stands for the entirety of Clemson’s season-opener vs. Georgia in Charlotte.

“I feel really good,” Klubnik told The Clemson Insider regarding Clemson’s chances of landing Greene.  “I think he had a great time. I love Andre. He’s a fun, energetic guy, but man, he’s a really, really good football player. He’ll be able to help out a ton. I’m feeling good about him, so we’re really hoping he makes the decision.”

Greene has been careful with his recruitment. He’s kept tonight’s decision very closed vest. Clemson’s coaches and commits have kept close contact ever since he departed back to Virginia and have continued their full-court press pursuit of Greene.

“Andre told us he really enjoyed his time, but I’m hoping that means he is coming home,” Greenville (S.C.) three-star tight end commit Josh Sapp told TCI.

Clemson did all it could this past weekend and certainly gave Greene something to think about. We are not sure if this past weekend’s events were enough for Clemson to inch past UNC, who entered Greene’s official visit weekend as the favorite.  We wouldn’t be surprised to see this one go either way, but we aren’t in a position to put a sunny forecast on this one at this time.

If Greene does commit to Chapel Hill, it would open up the door for Clemson to offer Dutch Fork (Irmo, S.C.) four-star wide receiver, Antonio Williams.

Over the past month Clemson has turned up their attention for Williams. Prior to Clemson’s 30-24 win over Louisville, wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham spent that Friday night on the recruiting trail, watching Williams from Dutch Fork’s sidelines, alongside freshman receiver Will Taylor.

Of course, that’s contingent on what Greene decides tonight. In any event, Clemson pulled out all the stops. It just might not have been enough to unseat Mack Brown and Co. as the favorites for Greene’s recruitment.

Klubnik, Clemson commits made ‘strong effort’ in recruiting WR target during official visit weekend

From a recruiting standpoint, this past weekend was one of, if not the biggest of the season for Clemson. Well, that’s as far as the 2022 recruiting class is concerned.

Sure, the opponent was a measly UConn team, but that’s beside the point. This weekend was about welcoming the team’s class of 2022 commits home before they put pen to paper next month and more importantly, depending on who you ask, Andre Greene, Jr.

Greene arrived in Tiger Town on Sunday morning. By then, Clemson already put its best foot forward with its commits. Now, the spotlight was on the four-star wide receiver and priority target out of Richmond (Va.) St. Christopher’s School.

Glossing over Greene’s social media, it’s easy to tell the type of treatment he was getting. Not only was he sitting next to Dabo Swinney at dinner on Sunday night, but the Tigers made sure his room was connected to that of five-star quarterback pledge Cade Klubnik.

Neither of those is a coincidence.

With Greene, Clemson put its best foot forward this weekend. There’s no denying that. Between Klubnik, Jihaad Campbell, Keon Sabb and Collin Sadler, The Clemson Insider got a better look at how Clemson’s commits feel about their chances in landing Greene ahead of Wednesday’s decision.

Campbell: “We definitely want him. We definitely want him in this class. We showed that really, really well on the visit too.”

Sabb: “I’ve been talking to Andre for a while, trying to get him to come. I think we definitely made a strong effort for him and I hope he’ll be committing with us.”

Sadler: “We feel good. We showed him a really good time. So, hopefully, that’ll reflect in his decision.

While it’s important that Greene hears from what very well could be his future teammates, it’s obvious that Klubnik is the biggest piece of this equation.

He hasn’t let up on his recruitment on Greene since he sat next to him during Clemson’s season-opener against Georgia in Charlotte. He’s the closest thing that Clemson’s got to a closer in this class and he very well could be a recruiting assistant in his own right.

Klubnik’s a natural leader. He clearly has the respect of his future teammates, not just the ones in his class, but judging from this past weekend, the ones that are already on campus.

It’s evident that he has his own, unique relationship with each individual player in the 2022 class, including Myrtle Beach (S.C.) four-star wide receiver commit Adam Randall, who he’ll be rooming with once he enrolls in January.

However, his bond with Greene, it’s just different.

“I feel really good,” Klubnik told TCI on Monday night. “I think he had a great time. I love Andre. He’s a fun, energetic guy, but man, he’s a really, really good football player. He’ll be able to help out a ton. I’m feeling good about him, so we’re really hoping he makes that decision.”

Between Klubnik, Swinney, Tyler Grisham and Clemson, everyone was “All In” on Greene this past weekend. It was imperative for him to make his official visit to Clemson, sandwiched between a Saturday afternoon playoff game and his eventual decision this coming Wednesday.

There’s no way of telling what Greene may be thinking, but the Tigers only helped themselves this weekend. We can tell you that much. Whether he picks Clemson, North Carolina or even Georgia in a little more than 24 hours, that remains to be seen.

What can be said, though, is Clemson did everything it could to land one of the nation’s best wide receiver prospects in the 2022 class. Whether it was enough, well, that will be determined come Wednesday, Nov. 17.

And Clemson fans, if you believe in the words of your future quarterback, there’s a good chance Greene will be putting on a Clemson hat when he makes that fateful decision.

Official visitors on tap for Clemson-UConn

Clemson is getting ready for a big recruiting weekend, as the Tigers will play host to a bunch of official visitors for Saturday’s game against UConn.

Most if not all of Clemson’s commitments in the 2022 class are expected to take their official visits, including Austin (Texas) Westlake five-star quarterback Cade Klubnik and IMG Academy standouts Jihaad Campbell, Daylen Everette and Keon Sabb, among others.

The only commit that won’t be able to make it is Toriano Pride. The four-star cornerback pledge from East St. Louis (Ill.) High School has a playoff game scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Preferred walk-on commits will be on campus as well, though it won’t be for an official visit.

While Clemson’s official visitor list is largely comprised of commits, the Tigers are slated to welcome a high-profile uncommitted official visitor in the 2022 class as well in Richmond (Va.) St. Christopher’s School four-star wide receiver Andre Greene Jr.

“Looking forward to getting back to Clemson,” Greene told The Clemson Insider last month. “Because of my school football schedule, I won’t be able to make the game. However, I feel it is important to get back there just to sit down with the coaching staff one last time before I make my final decision.”

Greene will not be able to make it for Saturday’s noon kickoff, but he still plans on making the trip for what could prove to be a critical official visit.

Greene made his way back to Clemson in July for the program’s All In Cookout after participating in the Dabo Swinney Camp as well. He publicly disclosed last week that he is down to Clemson, Georgia and North Carolina, and will announce his decision on Wednesday, Nov. 17.

Originally, Jennings (La.) four-star running back Trevor Etienne, of course, the younger brother of Travis Etienne, was supposed to be in attendance for Saturday’s game. However, Trevor has a playoff game on the road on Friday night, so his status is up in the air at the moment.

Trevor was last on campus for the Swinney Camp and Elite Retreat in June, In August, he released a top five featuring Clemson, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and LSU.

Some big-time prospects in future classes planning to unofficially visit Clemson this weekend are Warner Robins (Ga.) 2023 five-star defensive lineman Vic Burley, Dorman (Roebuck, S.C.) 2023 four-star offensive tackle Markee Anderson, Brookwood (Snellville, Ga.) 2023 four-star quarterback Dylan Lonergan, Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.) 2023 linebacker/safety Wade Woodaz, Pace Academy (Atlanta) 2024 four-star defensive lineman Hevin Brown-Shuler and Chapin (S.C.) 2024 four-star quarterback Jayden Bradford.

As for Bradford, he can’t wait to get back on campus this weekend for what will be a family affair.

“I’m really excited,” he told TCI. “I’m pretty sure my whole family’s going to go up there. My grandma is a huge Clemson fan, so we’re just going to go up there as a family and thank God for the opportunity and enjoy the moment.”

Priority Clemson target, 4-star WR sets commitment date

A high-priority wide receiver target for Clemson in the 2022 class has set his commitment date.

St. Christopher’s School (Richmond, Va.) four-star Andre Greene, Jr. said on social media Wednesday afternoon that he will announce his commitment two weeks from today on Nov. 17.

Greene is now down to Clemson, North Carolina and Georgia.

He told The Clemson Insider last week that he would like to take a couple more visits before he makes his final decision.

One of those is an official visit to Clemson the weekend of Nov. 12-14, and with St. Christopher’s scheduled to have a playoff game that weekend, Greene will no longer be able to attend the Tigers’ game against UConn on Saturday, Nov. 13.

Still, he is said to be making contingency plans to make it down to Tiger Town within the two weeks.

“Looking forward to getting back to Clemson next month,” Greene told TCI in a recent, exclusive interview.  “Because of my school football schedule, I won’t be able to make the game. However, I feel it is important to get back there just to sit down with the coaching staff one last time before I make my final decision.”

Greene has been on official visits to North Carolina, Georgia and Oregon, but not yet Clemson, of course.

“Clemson is definitely one of my top choices,” he said. “It’s such a difficult decision because each school has so much to offer.”

According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Greene is the No. 9 wide receiver and No. 71 overall prospect in the 2022 class. He is ranked as high as the No. 5 wideout and No. 36 overall prospect in his class by Rivals.

Priority Clemson WR target nearing commitment decision

A commitment decision is on the horizon for Clemson’s priority wide receiver target in the 2022 class.

But first, before he chooses a college to call home in the coming years, Richmond (Va.) St. Christopher’s School four-star Andre Greene Jr. plans to take a couple more visits.

One of those is an official visit to Clemson the weekend of Nov. 12-14. Because St. Christopher’s will have a playoff game that weekend, Greene won’t be able to attend the Tigers’ game against UConn on Saturday, Nov. 13.

Still, the official visit will be an important one for both Greene and the Tigers as he approaches making a commitment.

“Looking forward to getting back to Clemson next month,” Greene told The Clemson Insider. “Because of my school football schedule, I won’t be able to make the game. However, I feel it is important to get back there just to sit down with the coaching staff one last time before I make my final decision.”

Speaking of Clemson’s staff, Greene (6-3, 180) continues to stay in close contact with wide receivers coach Tyler Grisham as well as head man Dabo Swinney.

Greene and Swinney actually caught up again this week via a FaceTime call on Tuesday night.

“They just let me know how they love what I’m doing and how impressed they are with my ball skills,” Greene said of what he’s been hearing from Swinney and Grisham lately. “We talk about my playmaking abilities and how I would be a great fit for the Clemson program.”

Besides Clemson, the lone trip Greene is looking to make before his decision is an unofficial visit to Georgia that will likely occur the weekend before the Clemson visit.

Greene and his family had a scheduled video call with UGA head coach Kirby Smart on Thursday evening.

“I’m working on a plan to get back to UGA also,” Greene said. “I’ve been talking a lot over the past few months with (wide receivers) coach (Cortez) Hankton and coach Smart.”

Along with Clemson and Georgia, North Carolina has been the other top contender for Greene, and he returned to Chapel Hill at the beginning of this month for the Tar Heels’ game against Duke.

Greene hasn’t yet settled on a specific decision date, but a commitment from the star wideout is right around the corner.

“I haven’t narrowed down an actual date just yet. But a decision is likely to come sometime in the next few weeks,” he said.

Where do the Tigers stand with Greene heading into the official visit next month?

“Clemson is definitely one of my top choices,” he said. “It’s such a difficult decision because each school has so much to offer.”

According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Greene is the No. 9 wide receiver and No. 71 overall prospect in the 2022 class. He is ranked as high as the No. 5 wideout and No. 36 overall prospect in his class by Rivals.

Clemson fell just short against Georgia in a stout defensive matchup that featured two top-5 teams at the Duke’s Mayo Classic at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

After the game, The Clemson Insider reached out to a number of prospects, who were in attendance, to get their reactions from the game and their overall experience at such a marquee game. Check out what they had to say:

Oscar Delp, 2022 4-star TE, Cumming, GA. (West Forsyth High School): “The game was awesome I had a great time. I loved what both teams did with the TE.”

Andre Greene Jr., 2022 4-star WR, Richmond, Va. (St. Christopher’s School): “We had a great time at the game. It was definitely a defensive battle. I’m sure I’ll get to see more games during the season to get a better idea of how I would fit into their offense. It was the first game of the season with two excellent teams.

Kelby Collins, 2023 4-star DE, Gardendale, Ala. (Gardendale High): “It was a great experience, both fan bases are crazy.”

Christopher Vizzina, 2023 3-star QB, Birmingham, Ala. (Briarwood Christian): “I had a lot of fun. It was a defensive game for sure.”

Joshua Miller, 2023 3-star OL, Colonial Heights, Va. (Life Christian Academy): “It was a good time, I enjoyed the atmosphere. The energy was through the roof all night.”

Jayden Bradford, 2024 4-star QB, Chapin, S.C. (Chapin High School): “It was a great game to go to and watch the Clemson fans were very passionate throughout the game and I feel like if they had a little more time they could’ve pulled it out.”

Hevin Brown-Shuler, 2024 4-star DT, Atlanta, GA. (Pace Academy): “The game was electric. The fan base from both organizations is crazy. I expected for it to be a tight game especially having two young QB’s who by the way did well. Although I have an offer from UGA and often get checked on by Clemson, I never had an expectation on who would win, I just wanted to see a great competitive game in which I did witness.”

Kam Pringle, 2024 OT, Dorchester S.C. (Woodland): “It was definitely a great experience! Seeing all the live high-speed action and physicality of two great teams is definitely a crazy experience! Really enjoyed my time and met some other cool recruits!”

Penn State football’s future looks great with the Class of 2022 and Class of 2023

Penn State is already off to a good start with the Class of 2023 after a stellar Class of 2022

As we all know, James Franklin has had a busy summer recruiting. Penn State still currently has the top recruiting class in 2022 with 14 four-stars and 10 three-stars

They have already begun bringing in talent for their 2023 class, with their first commit being an offensive lineman out of Ashburn, Virginia in Alex Birchmeier. Birchmeier was the number one ranked offensive lineman in the nation who had several offers across the NCAA, according to 247 Sports

It’s early, but that one commit puts Penn State at 12th in the recruiting rankings for the class of 2023. Last season, the Nittany Lions started off to a disappointing 0-5 start, which was Franklin’s worst season since being hired as Penn State’s head coach in 2014.

Penn State’s 2022 recruiting class is loaded. We talked about four-star quarterback Drew Allar last week during our countdown series, who is one of those guys that leads that class. One other player that Penn State scored big on earlier this summer was defensive lineman Dani Dennis-Sutton. The 6-foot-5 and 250-pound recruit is very active with his hands and has good awareness as a defender. He will be an exciting guy to see the type of player he develops into.

Another player to watch is a versatile athlete out of Argyle, Texas in Kristian Driver, son of former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver. Kristian Driver is a multi-talented player who brings a substantial amount of flexibility for the Nittany Lions. If there’s anything we know about Franklin and his recruiting, it’s that he loves guys that can or are capable of playing multiple areas of the field.

As we continue our recruiting watch throughout the season, there are two other players to keep an eye on.

The first one is a 2023 four-star linebacker Raylen Wilson, who had Penn State in his top 12. There are no crystal ball predictions, but Wilson is still a player to monitor during the 2021 season.

The other player to watch is a 2022 four-star wide receiver out of Richmond, Virginia in Andre Greene Jr. There aren’t any crystal ball predictions for this one either. However, Green Jr. has Penn State in his top 6, which is promising and worth keeping an eye on.

Penn State has a very promising and exciting future ahead of them, but for now, it’s time to focus on their matchup this week in Madison, Wisconsin against the Badgers.

Follow Nittany Lions Wire on Twitter and like us on Facebook for continuing Penn State coverage and discussion.
