Andre Fili credits Cub Swanson for pulling him into a dogfight at UFC 303

Andre Fili apparently hoped his Saturday work shift was going to go a little differently than it did.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Andre Fili[/autotag] apparently hoped his Saturday work shift was going to go a little differently than it did.

Instead, Fili (24-11 MMA, 12-10 UFC) found himself in a 15-minute battle that showed when he left with a unanimous decision win over fellow longtime UFC featherweight Cub Swanson (29-14 MMA, 14-10 UFC) at UFC 303 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

“The first round played out exactly how I expected,” Fili said at his post-fight news conference. “He wanted to brawl and I was like, ‘Nah, we’re going to have a nice, technical, clean fight. With that, I’m going to win.

“Then he just became more insistent that we were going to brawl through the second and third. And I still won the brawl, too, but that guy’s really good at pulling you into a dogfight. He’s known for that, and I was surprised how well he did it. He pulled me into a brawl, and I still won the brawl. But I mean, it’s Cub Swanson – he’s good at what he does.”

UFC 303 results: Andre Fili squeaks by Cub Swanson in split decision nod

Two scrappy veterans in Andre Fili and Cub Swanson went the distance at UFC 303, leaving the judges split in their decision.

All-action veterans [autotag]Andre Fili[/autotag] and Cub Swanson turned in a fun 15-minute scrap that split the judges.

The featherweight bout was part of the UFC 303 preliminary card at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. When the dust settled, two judges saw the bout in favor of Fili (24-11 MMA, 12-10 UFC) over Swanson (29-14 MMA, 14-10 UFC) with dueling scores of 29-28.

The feel-out process saw both fighters light on their feet, bouncing around the octagon, hunting for an opening. As they settled in, the initial exchanges were single, darting strikes from both fighters.

Fili found a home for a head kick and a hard kick to the body to get Swanson’s attention. Regardless, Swanson continued his forward pressure, eventually connecting with a sharp punch down the middle, which Fili played off by taunting.

Just as Swanson looked to pick up his pressure on the feet in Round 2, Fili switched things up with his grappling game by hitting an early takedown followed by clinch work against the fence. Swanson separated midway through the round and connected with another clean punch. Swanson defended another takedown attempt and let his hands go in a nice flurry, getting the crowd riled up.

With the fight seemingly up for grabs on the scorecards, both came out firing and landing well early in Round 3.

Fili was successful with a takedown, but Swanson didn’t allow the fight to stay on the canvas. Back on the feet, Swanson continued to pressure as Fili circled on the outside, with both landing in heated striking exchanges until the final horn.

The judges did have the fight tied going into the final round, in which two of them, Mike Bell and Ron McCarthy favored Fili’s work, while Adalaide Byrd scored Round 3 for Swanson.

With the win, Fili bounces back from a first-round finish at the hands of Dan Ige in February. The 34-year-old California-based fighter has produced mixed results over his past six fights, having not put together back-to-back wins since 2019.

Andre Fili anticipates war with ‘f*cking psychopath’ Cub Swanson at UFC 303

Andre Fili doesn’t see how his UFC 303 fight with Cub Swanson doesn’t deliver, and that gets him excited.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Andre Fili[/autotag] doesn’t see how his UFC 303 fight with [autotag]Cub Swanson[/autotag] doesn’t deliver, and that gets him excited.

Fili (23-11 MMA, 11-10 UFC) meets Swanson (29-13 MMA, 14-9 UFC) on Saturday’s UFC 303 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) prelims at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. When the name Swanson was brought to Fili, he had zero hesitation accepting the fight.

“Immediate yes,” Fili told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a pre-fight news conference Wednesday. “I didn’t ask my coaches. I didn’t talk to anybody. I got a text that said, ‘Do you want to fight Cub Swanson June 29?’ I said, ‘Yes, I do.’

“Like instantly texted back because Cub is a legend, and he’s got a big name in the sport, and I think our styles make a very exciting fight, and I can’t wait to show everybody.”

Swanson has been in his fair share of barnburners – including his win over Dooho Choi at UFC 206, which was inducted into the Fight Wing of the 2022 UFC Hall of Fame.

“Have you ever watched that guy fight? He’s a f*cking psychopath,” Fili said. “You’ve got to fight fire with fire, and that gets me excited. It gets me excited to go in there and bite down on my mouth piece and talk a little sh*t and throw my hands up and get back to that type of fight where you just go get into a fist fight.”

Andre Fili vs. Cub Swanson joins UFC 303 lineup on June 29

Featherweight veterans Andre Fili and Cub Swanson will throw down at UFC 303 this summer.

Featherweight veterans will throw down at UFC 303 this summer as [autotag]Andre Fili[/autotag] is set to meet [autotag]Cub Swanson[/autotag] on June 29 during International Fight Week at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie following an initial report from Fili’s management, Iridium Sports Agency.

Fili (23-11 MMA, 12-10 UFC), 33, has split his past four octagon appearances. After a first-round TKO finish of Lucas Almeida at UFC 296, the Team Alpha Male fighter stepped in on short notice against Dan Ige at UFC Fight Night 236 in February. He lost the fight by knockout in the first round.

Swanson (29-13 MMA, 14-9 UFC) snapped his four-fight losing skid by winning four of his past six. After a failed attempt at bantamweight against Jonathan Martinez, Swanson returned to featherweight this past August when he edged out Hakeem Dawodu in a close decision win.

With the addition, the current UFC 300 lineup includes:

  • Cody Durden vs. Carlos Hernandez
  • Andre Fili vs. Cub Swanson

UFC’s Andre Fili makes light of KO loss to Dan Ige: ‘Thanks for the extra shot at the end, ya d*ckhead’

Andre Fili reacts to his knockout loss to Dan Ige this past Saturday at UFC Fight Night 236.

Despite suffering a pretty bad knockout, [autotag]Andre Fili[/autotag] is keeping a positive attitude after his latest career setback.

The UFC featherweight took to Instagram on Tuesday to react to his defeat to Dan Ige this past Saturday in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 236 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Although the outcome of the fight was far from an ideal situation for Fili (23-11 MMA, 12-10 UFC), he was in good spirits.

“Live by the sword, die by the sword,” Fili wrote. “Tough night at the office on Saturday. Got to take the wins and the losses as a man. I’ll learn from my mistakes, shake it off, make a few dumb jokes, and I will come back better- the way I always do. The amount of love I got from everyone is genuinely overwhelming – idk what I did to deserve so much but I’m immensely grateful for it and I will spend my energy trying to reciprocate and perpetuate it back out into the world.

“Congrats to (Dan Ige) he’s truly one of the good guys in this sport, all the best to his family and new baby girl. Thanks for the extra shot at the end, ya d*ckhead, I hope your hand hurts haha. Onward & upward.”

UFC Fight Night 236 results: Dan Ige floors Andre Fili with vicious right hand in first round

Dan Ige picked up a vicious knockout in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 236 by landing a crushing right hand on Andre Fili.

[autotag]Dan Ige[/autotag] was hoping for a quick night at the office, and his wish was granted.

In the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 236 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Ige (18-7 MMA, 10-6 UFC) met Andre Fili in what promised to be an exciting featherweight bout. It proved to be exactly that for as long as it lasted, because Ige closed the show just 2:43 into Round 1 by knocking out Fili (23-11 MMA, 12-10 UFC).

The two featherweights provided a fast pace from the start. Both darted in and out with quick movements as they searched for openings. As Fili threw out a pawing left jab, Ige came over the top with a powerful right hand that sent Fili crashing to the mat. Ige walked in and put in one more right hand to his downed opponent for good measure, and then walked off in celebration.

[lawrence-related id=2714298,2714296,2714268]

The result marks a return to the win column for Ige, who had a two-fight winning streak snapped by Bryce Mitchell in September. Prior to that, “50K” Ige knocked out Damon Jackson and picked up a unanimous decision win over Nate Landwehr.

Perhaps more importantly than exiting the cage unscathed with another highlight reel moment, Ige can turn his focus to family, as his wife is due to give birth at any moment.

“She’s probably in labor right now, so I had to make that one quick,” Ige told Daniel Cormier during his post-fight interview.
