Chiefs UDFA Spotlight: Washington WR Andre Baccellia

How does Washington WR Andre Baccellia fit with the Kansas City Chiefs?

A former three-star recruit out of Westlake High School in California, Baccellia was recruited to six different schools including three schools in the PAC-12. He ultimately chose the Washington Huskies, where he’d take a redshirt season in 2015.

Baccellia spent his entire career at Washington under head coach Chris Peterson. Despite being one of the fastest players on the team, Baccellia didn’t really have what one might consider a breakout season with the Huskies. He was always played his role with guys like Aaron Fuller and Dante Pettis taking the spotlight.

Quarterback play also probably had something to do with his lack of production. Baccellia spent three of his non-redshirt seasons with QB Jake Browning, who is a practice squad quarterback with the Vikings. During the 2019 season, Baccellia got the best QB play of his collegiate career out of Jacob Eason who was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts.

Fit with the Chiefs:

I know what Brett Veach is seeing and thinking by bringing in Baccellia. He has a similar size, speed, acceleration and shiftiness to one of the players that Veach helped bring to the Philadelphia Eagles back in the 2008 NFL Draft. That player is none other than DeSean Jackson. Obviously, Jackson was much more productive, which is the difference between second-round pick and undrafted free agent status. Still, these are similar players stylistically.

The financial package combined with the compelling opportunity to join the reigning Super Bowl champions sparked Baccellia’s interest following the draft. He had offers from other teams like the Jacksonville Jaguars but felt Kansas City was more genuine in their approach.

“There’s a lot of speed on that team and I want to contribute to that,” Baccellia said of joining the Chiefs.

We know the Chiefs are on the hunt for speedy receivers that can fill Mecole Hardman’s spot on special teams as he takes up an expanded role on offense. Baccellia wasn’t a return specialist in college, but he has the ability in the open field to find some success there. Dave Toub has even mentioned that he’ll be trying some different guys at the return specialist positions even if they haven’t played there in the past. Like most of the Chiefs’ undrafted free agents, special teams is where Baccellia will have to make an early impression if he wants a chance to make the team.
