Celtics alum Shane Larkin signs 2-season extension with Turkish EuroLeague champs Efes

Larkin will have a clause to return to the NBA if he chooses, but given the success he is having abroad, we do not expect him to use it.

While there were a fair amount of reunions on the Boston Celtics this year with a number of familiar faces from Al Horford and Daniel Theis all the way back to Joe Johnson making appearances in green and white to play for Boston in the 2021-22 season.

But while it would not be impossible thanks to a clause in a new extension (first reported by Ismail Senol of beIN SPORTS) that would allow him to return to the NBA, Celtics alumnus Shane Larkin is not very likely to make use of that clause given how well he’s been doing with his current team, Anadolu Efes Istanbul. Efes — as they are called for short — has won the last two EuroLeague titles with Larkin as their primary star, the Miami product enjoying a level of stardom unlikely to become available to him in the NBA.

Larkin’s extension will keep him employed by Efes until the end of the 2023-24 season assuming the 29-year-old floor general does not elect to exercise the termination clause that would let him make the leap back to the Association.

Jake Fischer: I also don’t think Zach LaVine is really going to leave Chicago. Even people around him have been saying all along, like, ‘yeah, so the door is open, but like, we don’t think he’s going to leave’. -via Spotify / June 10, 2022
Jake Fischer on Deandre Ayton: He wants to max, he doesn’t want to come down from that. So that’s the case, if one team offers him the max, which I think seems pretty possible… Detroit gets mentioned a lot. Like Portland, it seems like he’s an another guy that Dame has interest in playing with. Toronto gets mentioned, San Antonio has been mentioned. -via Spotify / June 10, 2022

Ergin Ataman was a guest on Turkish television and, among other things, he talked about whether Shane Larkin and Vasilije Micic will continue with the team, the potential addition of Will Clyburn, as well as if this Efes squad could be considered the best in Euroleague history. “Shane Larkin is very happy here. Larkin reached the peak of his career in Anadolu Efes, becoming one of the 2 to 3 best players in Europe, sometimes even the best. He broke the record in Europe. Won two championships in a row. The family atmosphere in Anadolu Efes must have affected him as well, but after all, he is a professional. Of course, there are serious offers for him. After all, free agents in Europe are clear today. Of course, we really want Larkin to continue with us. Let’s hope this will work out in a positive way, but if it doesn’t, there may be some flash transfers as a result,” he said and compared it to stellar transfers in soccer. -via EuroHoops.net / May 26, 2022

According to Eurohoops sources, he …

According to Eurohoops sources, he [Shane Larkin] will stay in Anadolu Efes and extend his contract which is second best outside the NBA only to Nikola Mirotic’s deal with Barcelona. So why he is on the list? According to the same sources, his NBA opt-out clause expires after the first week of July and that’s the only thing left in order for him to sign the extension. His side will do the NBA due diligence and if nothing spectacular comes, he will stay in Istanbul for two more years.

Ergin Ataman: “Like Messi’s transfer to France, like Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer to different teams. We are doing everything we can to prevent this from happening. Our relations with Larkin as a club are very good. I think he likes the club and Istanbul very much, but ultimately the decision will be made by the player himself. As for Vasilije Micic’s situation, I think his contract has an NBA exit until July 20. Micic can’t play for any other club in Europe for 3 years, we signed the contract last season. He might consider it if he gets a big offer from the NBA. I think Micic enjoyed playing in Europe. The time will tell. Frankly, I think Micic will continue with us. I think he will be with us next season as well. There is not much we can do about it. I mean, he has a very good contract, but if there is a big offer from the NBA, we will try to fill his place. We want to continue with both players.”

Marc Stein: Oklahoma City acquired the rights to Micic in the same December 2020 deal in which it landed Al Horford from Philadelphia. The Thunder indeed also acquired a future first-round pick (2025) in the same trade. I’m told there is already NBA interest in Vasilije Micic, 28, for next season. -via Twitter @TheSteinLine / May 21, 2022
“This one still feels amazing. Not much changed since five minutes ago. Still, I am speechless,” Vasilije Micic said after receiving the trophy from Euroleague Legend Vassilis Spanoulis, “These achievements will stay with me for all my life, it will stay marked in my heart as long as I play basketball and afterward. This would be impossible without my teammates. Four amazing years together, two titles. Team results are more important.” -via EuroHoops.net / May 21, 2022
Donatas Urbonas: Vasilije Micic on the possibility to go to the NBA next season: “I’m in a situation where I have two more years of the contract no matter what happens. But of course, I like to look at all kinds of challenges. If this option comes out, I would be ready to risk.” -via Twitter @Urbodo / May 21, 2022
