Throne & Liberty preview: A fresh take on MMO fantasy

Throne & Liberty, a new MMO from Amazon Games Studios, plays it safe with structure, but puts a promising twist on the fantasy setting

World of Warcraft might be underwhelming for some players, but the likes of Lost Ark and Final Fantasy XIV have proven that MMOs are here to stay. There’s plenty of competition in the space, even just with those titles, but Throne & Liberty from NCSOFT and Amazin Games is attempting to set a new bar for fidelity in open-world, free-to-play MMOs.

GLHF had a chance to check out a demo during Summer Game Fest, and the first thing that stands out is how striking Throne & Liberty is. There’s an initial Breath of the Wild, Bethesda-like step-out moment, where your player character pushes open some doors to emerge from a dark cave for the first time, and you’re treated to a cinematic sweep over the landscape, whose horizon is dominated by a giant tree that’s erupting with cherry blossoms.

Characters animate surprisingly well in cutscenes, with highly expressive faces and gentle life-like movements. The effect is subtle, but characters don’t give the impression of stiff NPCs, which lends the world a little extra believability. The world itself s fairly grounded and realistic as well, or as realistic as a fantasy world can be. It’s a hybrid blend of familiar medieval fantasy with Age of Exploration-era sailors and ships surprisingly well, and the result is something that seems aesthetically closer to Game of Thrones rather than Warcraft or Final Fantasy XIV.

I’m so used to sorcery and fantasy shenanigans that I didn’t even bat an eyelid when a dwarf transformed into a giant golem just to open the massive doors of a castle gate, but what I didn’t expect was that these transformations are a key part of gameplay and exploration. You can sprint across the land as a swift wolf, or, in a fresh twist on the now-ubiquitous paraglider – don some feathers and soar down a steep cliff as a regal eagle.

Embodying a different creature to travel fast across the world is, frankly, so much more exciting and innovative than hopping on a horse or griffon or what-have-you, and I’m eager to see what other transformations we can look forward to.

As far as gameplay, Throne & Liberty mostly sticks to a traditional MMO setup.  There’s a smattering of busy hub cities full of quests and the occasional secret, combat revolves around managing your skill cooldown timers, and if you’ve played an MMO before, then you know how this all works. That’s not to say it’s bland or predictable, though, thanks to a handful of new ideas thrown in the mix.

There’s a satisfying, real-time element to combat where you’re prompted to use a counter before getting hit by certain moves, and a good counter will block damage and deal some of it back.

Guilds will play a significant role in Throne & Liberty, with dozens of players facing off against each other during guild battles. Guilds will include roughly 50 to 70 players each and wage war for control over strongholds scattered across the MMO’s map. It sounds a bit like Planetside 2, which also features a continuous battle for supremacy over a piece of the land, and that’s certainly no bad thing.

Nothing I saw of Throne & Liberty blew me away, but the overall package undeniably has potential It’ll be F2P, release on Steam and modern consoles, and has some great visuals, and the promise of large-scale multiplayer encounters is very exciting. The only thing Throne & Liberty really needs to do is stand out in the market.

You can sign up to test Throne & Liberty now via the official Throne & Liberty website.

Amazon Game Studios founder leaves company after nine years

Amazon Game Studios’ Alf Tan has left the company after nine years and six months, shortly following the launch of Amazon Luna.

Alf Tan, founder of Amazon Game Studios, Amazon Luna director, and former director at Xbox, has left Amazon after nine years and six months with the company.

Posting on his LinkedIn, Tan states: “With my teammates, I got the opportunity to start Amazon Game Studios, build the Amazon Appstore to a profitable $billion business, launch Luna, Bar Raise 400+ interviews, speak at NHOs, mentor leaders, coach teams, and learn from fellow Amazonians what it means to be a good human.

“I will miss the clarity of our mission and principles. I will most miss colleagues that have inspired and challenged me to be better every day. As I reflect on my Amazon journey, the highlights were consistently the people I worked with.”

Tan seems to be continuing his career in the games industry, finishing his goodbye with: “Tough decision to move on from something I love. Stay tuned, I will continue to deliver joy through games.”

Amazon’s Luna platform has been available since March 2022 after a beta phase, though the service hasn’t yet made waves among gaming fans, even with 86 games available from publishers including Ubisoft, Capcom, and Sega.

It’s almost impossible to hazard a guess at what Alf Tan’s next move could be, or what this means for Amazon Luna, if anything.

In 2019 Amazon Game Studios canceled several unannounced games and laid off “dozens” of staff during that year’s E3 event in Los Angeles, according to Kotaku. Crucible was one of the highest-profile cancellations, a hero shooter that saw a beta in May 2020, followed by ceased development in October of that year.

Amazon Game Studios has since seen success with New World and Lost Ark, two high-profile MMORPGs, so it seems unlikely that Amazon Game Studios as a whole is going anywhere any time soon. Though whether the focus will be on Amazon Luna or more games is yet to be seen.

Lost Ark is getting a new European server region to cope with the influx of players

Developer Smilegate plans to add an entirely new region of servers to cope with European demand.

Lost Ark is a new MMO that came from nowhere and quickly jumped into the charts on Steam. Diablo in Final Fantasy 14 clothing, it offers something different to a crowd who are starved of new experiences.

At its peak, 1,324,761 people were playing it at the same time. Right this second, there are still over 600,000 people clicking on mobs. Well, to be a little more honest about it, a lot of those people are queuing in the hopes of clicking on some mobs. Lost Ark’s queues are so notorious that they’ve become a meme

Luckily for those players, help is on the way. Developer Smilegate plans to add an entirely new region of servers to cope with European demand.

“This is the only way to accommodate more players in Europe,” said Smilegate. “It’s a joint effort between Amazon Games and Smilegate RPG. Rest assured we are working 24/7 until it’s live.

“While we understand lengthy queue times may persist, we will need time to ensure everything is set up to be in top shape to help accommodate all players to get in game. We’ll share an update on exact timings as soon as possible.”

According to the developer, the new server region will help accommodate new players who want to get into the game. This is because any Founder’s Pack rewards are tied to the server existing players have already selected. There are also some Lost Ark Founder’s rewards on the table for those who want to switch region, at least.

Smilegate does have some compensation for players who are already tied down, however. These include a new horse, skins, healing items, and a bunch more. As soon as the new server region is up, the rewards will be there until March 1.

Jeff Bezos happy with the success of ‘New World’ after several failures from Amazon Games

If at first you don’t succeed…

Amazon Games has a success story on its hands with New World, and nobody is happier about it than Jeff Bezos. The company’s founder and executive chairman acknowledged that there were many failures from its gaming division before success finally took shape with New World

“After many failures and setbacks in gaming, we have a success,” Bezos said on Twitter. “So proud of the team for the persistence. View setbacks as helpful obstacles that drive learning. Whatever your goals are, don’t give up no matter how hard it gets.”

Those obstacles Bezos refers to are games like Breakaway and Crucible — the former got canceled before it could even come out, while the latter was shut down not long after launch. While framing New World’s success as an underdog story is silly considering Amazon’s resources, the fact is things were looking dismal before MMORPG came along.

Since New World’s launch on Tuesday, it has managed to reach a concurrent player count of over 800,000 players, according to SteamDB. Even beating Counter-Strike: Global Offensive to be the most played game on Steam.

Though despite how thrilled Bezos might be with the news, he still doesn’t want anyone naming their New World Character after him

Amazon’s MMORPG ‘New World’ will not let you name a character after Jeff Bezos

Big shocker, eh?

New World  from Amazon Games is a bonafide hit, and it seems as though the studio anticipated meme enthusiasts would be into it. Since, well, you can’t name a character after Amazon’s founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos, PC Gamer Reported Tuesday

Neither “Bezos” nor “Amazon” can appear in character names at all. The same goes for variations like “Bez0s,” “JeffB,” or “Be Zos” as all give a message claiming they “cannot be used” — Amazon Games clearly gave this a lot of thought. It’s not uncommon for MMORPGs to disallow specific names from the get-go, though.

For example, Final Fantasy XIV won’t let players name their characters “Cloud Strife” because that’s the protagonist from Final Fantasy VII. Of course, loads of offensive slurs and bigoted language are never allowed in these sorts of games either. But the founder of a game’s parent company? That’s a new one.

It’s not terribly surprising that Amazon Games want to quell any potential memes before they happen, though, as the studio doesn’t have the best track record. Its first effort was a team-based brawler Breakaway that got canceled before it came out. Then last year, Crucible came out to scathing reviews before being quickly shut down. So yeah, New World is the studio’s first success story. Thus far, anyway.

‘New World’ almost reaches a million concurrent players on Steam

Amazon’s new MMORPG is popular, it seems.

Well, it seems as though Amazon Game Studio’s MMORPG New World is a hit if the numbers are any indication. During its launch on Tuesday, New World catapulted into Steam’s 10 ten most popular games, with over 700,000 players logged in concurrently at its peak.

According to SteamDBNew World’s all-time peak concurrent player count is 707,230, which puts it just behind Steam’s top-dog Counter-Strike: Global Offensive’s peak today of 757,827 simultaneous players. It’s an impressive feat, as games rarely ever reach those sort of numbers on Steam. Especially an MMORPG on its first day!

Unsurprisingly, its developers are struggling to meet the demand, leaving a disclaimer about server instability and how they are trying to get everything ship-shape.

“It has been an unbelievable 24 hours and the support for New World that we’ve seen so far has been incredible,” Amazon Game Studios said in a statement. “We understand that some players are experiencing lengthy queue times and we are working hard on a few things to help address these issues.”

Check out the entire message for yourself below.

Where all the interest for New World came from is anybody’s guess. However, it might be a combination of World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV players looking for something different, as new MMORPGs rarely come out these days.

The open beta for ‘New World’ starts September 9

Clash swords with fellow adventurers from all over the world in this public stress test.

New World’s open beta is coming on September 9 for anyone eager to try out the exploration-based MMORPG that’s stealing World of Warcraft‘s thunder.

Hopping into New World’s beta is as easy as requesting access on its Steam page once it’s available, which Amazon Game Studios said should be ready by September 8. Again, this is a stress test of sorts, so even if you get in, there’s a good chance its servers will capsize like the old Viking Gokstad ships that are all over the game.

Coinciding with the open beta announcement is a new trailer for New World, which you can watch below.

Amazon Games Studios have stated that participating in the open beta for New World won’t require purchasing the game itself. So if you’re even slightly interested, it might be worth giving it a go. During the closed beta, New World hit 200,000 concurrent players. A staggering feat for a brand-new MMORPG, so it’s clear that the hype is real.
