Former Ohio State forward Alonzo Gaffney finds new home

Former Ohio State basketball forward Alonzo Gaffney will be heading to the desert to play at Arizona State.

Highly touted forward Alonzo Gaffney came to Ohio State in the fall of 2019 but decided Columbus wasn’t the place for him after only a year. Gaffney transferred to Northwest Florida Junior College and most thought he would turn pro after that, but the 6-foot, 9-inch forward had other ideas.

Instead, Gaffney has decided to head to the desert and play for Bobby Hurley at Arizona State.

While a freshman with the Buckeyes, Gaffney averaged less than two points per game and close to seven minutes in each of 17 games played in scarlet and gray. At Northwest Florida, Gaffney’s numbers improved as he played in 21 games and averaged 8.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.

How will Gaffney’s game translate from junior college to the Pac-12? Only time will tell, but he will be playing with a familiar face. Former Ohio State guard Luther Muhammad transferred to ASU last season but spent the year as a redshirt.

Arizona State went 11-14 last season and hopes its new additions from the Buckeye state will lead to better days ahead.

Former Ohio State forward Alonzo Gaffney goes junior college route and transfers to Northwest Florida

Former Ohio State basketball forward Alonzo Gaffney will be transferring to junior college Northwest Florida.

We finally know where former Ohio State forward Alonzo Gaffney will be heading for the next step in his career. When the 6-foot, 9-inch forward committed to the Buckeyes, he was a five-star prospect with a seemingly limitless ceiling. And while that rating slipped a wee-bit to a high four-star recruit, big things were still expected from the extremely long and athletic No. 2 rated player in the state of Ohio.

But Gaffney could never solve the riddle of the OSU depth chart. He started the year with some significant minutes, but as the Big Ten season wore on, his minutes dwindled and it became a rare sight for him to enter any game of significance with much on the line. He struggled with the physical nature of the Big Ten and turned the ball over far too often for a guy not counted on to bring the ball up the court.

Gaffney then became missing from the team for unknown reasons. First it was messaged as an undisclosed illness, but then his absence continued without much to go on. In the end, there seemed to be something in the works for a decision to leave the program because Gaffney thenΒ entered the transfer portal after announcing that he would turn professional.

Now, after hearing nothing for quite some time, he will be headed to junior college and transferring to Northwest Florida according to a release from the University.

“It’s a great feeling to join a program like Northwest Florida and I can’t wait to start the process of preparing for the season,” Gaffney said in a statement. “I have a great a connection with Coach (Butch) Pierre. The environment at NWF is great, it just felt like the right fit.”

Northwest Florida head coach also seemed pleased to announce such a player coming to his program.

“He is a great addition to our program and will impact our team greatly,” Pierre said. “He has incredible athleticism, the ability to make big time plays and defend all five positions. Alonzo has the potential to play at the next level, he’s a game-changing player.”

Gaffney averaged 1.8 points, 1.4 rebounds, and shot 56.5 percent from the field on 6.8 minutes per contest during his freshman year at Ohio State.

Former Ohio State forward Alonzo Gaffney has entered the transfer portal

Former Ohio State basketball forward Alonzo Gaffney has reportedly entered his name into the transfer portal per reports.

If you’ve been following the Ohio State men’s basketball team, you know that the departures this year have looked a lot like people running out of a burning building. Gone are D.J. Carton, Luther Muhammad, and Alonzo Gaffney. In the case of Gaffney, a 6-foot, 9-inch forward, early reports had his departure surrounding the possibility of hitting the professional ranks.

As of Thursday night however, that appears to have changed. According to a source close to 247Sports, Gaffney has now entered the transfer portal, meaning he is more likely to explore a departure to another program.

Gaffney came to Ohio State as a highly-recruited athlete with a ton of upside. During his freshman season however, he never really found a role with the team. The lack of meat on his frame, in combination with a talented potential that was still being developed, had him relegated to a deep role on the bench once Big Ten season began.

He averaged just 1.8 points and 1.4 rebounds in 6.8 minutes per contest last season, with much of that coming before conference play began.

At the tail-end of the season, it started to become clear that something was wrong. At first, illness was cited as a reason for his absence from the team, but as he continued to not travel and suit-up, mystery ensued.

Now, it appears as though we could see Gaffney with another program in college basketball in the not too distant future. As any further information becomes available, we’ll be on top of it.
