4 takeaways from Chargers’ 27-6 win over Jets

Here is what stood out from the Chargers’ win over the Jets on Monday night.

There was a certain sense of dread hanging in the air for much of the Chargers’ Monday night performance. Despite an early 14-0 lead buoyed by a fierce defensive performance, the game never felt truly in control.

Maybe that’s just the trauma talking.

Los Angeles kept their eye on the prize on Monday, eventually closing out a 27-6 win against a Jets team that has plenty of their own questions to answer going forward. The Chargers did not allow a touchdown on Monday for the second time in the Brandon Staley era.

Here’s what to take away from the game.

Highlights: Chargers force back-to-back fumbles vs. Jets

The Chargers’ defense is dominating the Jets.

The Chargers’ defense is dominating the Jets, forcing two consecutive fumbles.

On the first, Garrett Wilson was met by Alohi Gilman, who punched the ball out. Derwin James made a sliding recovery out of bounds at the 35 to give LA their first takeaway of the game.

On the second one, New York faced a third and three from the Chargers 42-yard line. Zach Wilson dropped back to pass and hung in a rapidly collapsing pocket looking for options to convert a first down. Before he could find one, Joey Bosa swiped at Wilson’s right arm through his matchup, dislodging the ball.

It took a perfect bounce away from the pocket, leaving Bosa free to disengage and fall on the ball.

Jalen Guyton and Otito Ogbonnia logged their first full practice since their season-ending injuries in 2022.

Los Angeles opened the 21-day practice window for them last week.

After missing practice on Wednesday, Gerald Everett (hip) was a limited participant.

Ahead of their Week 7 matchup against the Chiefs, the Chargers released their first practice report of the week.

Ahead of their Week 7 matchup against the Chiefs, the Chargers released their first practice report of the week.

The Bolts only had a walkthrough Wednesday since they are only two days removed from their last game against the Cowboys, which means the report is simply an estimation of a player’s participation if they held a practice.

Aside from Raheem Layne, who was placed on the injured reserve with a torn ACL injury, Alohi Gilman (heel) and Deane Leonard (hamstring) were estimated as non-participants.

Joey Bosa (toe), Sebastian Joseph-Day (knee) and Amen Ogbongbemiga (hamstring) were estimated as limited participants.

Los Angeles will practice on Thursday and Friday before flying out to Kansas City.

Chargers defensive snap count leaders at the bye week

Taking a look at the Chargers’ defensive players who have seen the field the most.

With four games played and the Chargers on their bye week, I figured it’d be a good time to take a look at which players are going to benefit the most from this time to rest and recover before entering the final stretch of the season.

With that said, here’s a glance at the Bolts’ top-10 defensive snap count leaders after four weeks.

Raiders vs Chargers final injury report: Seriously banged up Chargers squad

Raiders to face seriously banged up Chargers squad Sunday

We on this side of things tend to focus on the Raiders’ injuries most times. For instance, all eyes have been on the statuses of QB Jimmy Gaoppolo (concussion) and DE Maxx Crosby (knee). But the Chargers may be considerably worse off than the Raiders this week.

This week, there are five Chargers starters who are either Out, Doubtful, or Questionable for Sunday’s game in Los Angeles.

Officially Out is Pro Bowl center Corey Linsley.

Doubtful are All Pro safety Derwin James and standout RB Austin Ekeler

Questionable are Pro Bowl EDGE Joey Bosa and starting safety Alohi Gilman.

Meanwhile, for the Raiders, only special team maven Curtis Bolton is officially Out.

They do, however, have five players who are officially Questionable. Along with Crosby and Garoppolo, Nate Hobbs appeared on the injury report with an ankle injury he apparently suffered in Friday’s practice. So too did Malcolm Koonce who seems to have had a groin injury flare up on Thursday, putting him as Questionable as well.

Chargers Week 4 injury report: Thursday

The Chargers had five non-participants for the second straight day.

The Chargers had their second practice before Sunday’s matchup with the Raiders on Thursday.

Here’s a look at the team’s injury report:

EDGE Joey Bosa — Hamstring/Toe — DNP

RB Austin Ekeler — Hamstring — LP

TE Gerald Everett — Illness — DNP

S Alohi Gilman — Heel — DNP

S Derwin James — Hamstring — DNP

LB Eric Kendricks — Hamstring — LP

CB Deane Leonard — Hamstring — LP

OL Corey Linsley — Illness — DNP

EDGE Khalil Mack — NIR — DNP

LB Kenneth Murray — Groin — LP

OT Rashawn Slater — Ankle — LP

DNP: Did not practice; LP: Limited participation; FP: Full participation

Derwin James and Alohi Gilman did not practice for the second consecutive day.

JT Woods and Raheem Layne are the only other safeties on the active roster. Dean Marlowe and AJ Finley would likely be called up from the practice squad.

Joey Bosa, Gerald Everett and Corey Linsley were also non-participants for the second straight day.

Austin Ekeler was a limited participant for the second day in a row.

After not participating on Wednesday, Kenneth Murray and Khalil Mack were back at practice.

Raiders vs Chargers Thursday injury report: DE Maxx Crosby (knee) misses practice

Maxx Crosby (knee) misses practice while Jimmy Garoppolo (concussion) returns limited

Good news and bad news for the Raiders on Thursday. Good news was Jimmy Garoppolo returned to practice. He is still in the concussion protocol and was limited. Bad news is Maxx Crosby missed practice with a knee injury.

Crosby had been limited on Wednesday, but was downgraded Thursday.

The Chargers were also without their best pass rusher. Joey Bosa has missed both practices so far this week with hamstring and toe injuries.

Also missing for the Chargers the past two days are TE Gerald Everett (illness), S Alohi Gilman (heel), S Derwin James (hamstring), and C Corey Linsley (illness).

All of the players missing for the Chargers are starters, so obviously any of them missing the game would be significant.

In addition, Austin Ekeler was limited while he continued to try and return from an ankle injury he suffered in the season opener.

Other Raiders players who missed practice were LB Curtis Bolton and S Roderic Teamer. Both are special teams standouts.

4 takeaways from Chargers’ 28-24 victory over Vikings

Here’s what stood out from the Chargers’ Week 3 win over the Vikings.

Well, folks, they did it. The Chargers won a football game. It was hardly comfortable, of course, because that’s Chargers football. But they did, crucially, win the game.

Here’s what to take away from a whirlwind game.
