Allen Robinson doesn’t sound encouraged about a contract extension

After reports that the Bears and Allen Robinson were making progress on a contract extension, the receiver didn’t sound encouraged.

It’s been over a week since the #ExtendAllenRobinson movement kicked up a notch after the Chicago Bears wide receiver made it known through social media and other avenues that he was unhappy with the progress of contract negotiations.

After talking with general manager Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy last week, Robinson appeared to be in a better place about the situation. Reports even surfaced over the weekend indicating the extension possibility “had gained some momentum.” Now, it feels as if Robinson and the Bears are right back where they started.

When meeting the media on Wednesday afternoon, Robinson was asked by Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun Times if he was more optimistic about a deal being done. In a subdued tone, Robinson deflected the question, instead choosing to focus on the upcoming game.

“We know where we stand at, right now I’m just trying to focus on the Falcons,” he said.

Later on, Robinson was asked about running back Tarik Cohen’s comments about leaving money on the table for the wide receiver and he simply said, “I told him I appreciate that,” in the same subdued tone as his other answer. Robinson was noticeably more upbeat when discussing topics such as rookie wide receiver Darnell Mooney’s development.

The answers Robinson provided aren’t anything new, but the tone of his voice may indicate he’s more discouraged than last week. Despite the willingness of the team and Robinson to find common ground, both parties still appear to be significantly apart.

Perhaps Robinson wasn’t in the mood to talk about his deal after coming off a lackluster game in the Bears’ Week 2 victory where he only caught three passes on nine targets for 33 yards. Or negotiations are still moving at a snail’s pace. Either way, it’s clearly been a sore subject and is the storyline that just won’t go away.

But if Wednesday’s media session is any indication, we’re no closer to a resolution. In the meantime, fans and players alike will keep the #ExtendAR movement alive.

Tarik Cohen says he ‘left some money on the plate’ for Allen Robinson extension

Bears RB Tarik Cohen, who pushed for WR Allen Robinson to get an extension before his own, continued to advocate for Robinson.

Bears running back Tarik Cohen just received a big payday last weekend, where he signed a three-year, $17.25 million extension to remain in Chicago through 2023.

But that wasn’t the contract extension talk that had the NFL world buzzing last week. Bears receiver Allen Robinson dominated headlines when he scrubbed his social media of all references to the Bears, which was clearly a reflection of his frustrations in trying to get a contract extension done.

Cohen, who pushed for Robinson to get an extension even before he was taken care of, continued to advocate for Robinson to get an extension from the Bears.

“It’s definitely time for him to get his, to get extended,” Cohen told reporters Tuesday. “I even left some money on the plate. I took less so he could get more, so to say.”

Cohen acknowledged he was joking about leaving money on the table, but he continues to back Robinson’s desire to get a deserving extension from the Bears.

Following rumors of a potential trade request, Allen’s representation insisted his desire is to sign an extension with Chicago. This public contract dispute certainly brought attention to the issue. The Bears have resumed contract talks and are focused on coming to an agreement on an extension that would keep Robinson in Chicago for the foreseeable future, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

As for the hold-up on the extension, it had to do with the money. The Bears wanted to pay Robinson in the $15 million to $16 million per year range, but Robinson felt like he deserves around $18 million per year.

With the Bears resuming contract negotiations with Robinson, we’ll see how long it takes for the team to lock up its best offensive player.

Bears don’t want to trade Allen Robinson, turn focus to signing him to an extension

The Bears are not interested in trading WR Allen Robinson, and they’re working on signing him to a contact extension.

Bears receiver Allen Robinson was a hot topic of conversation this week as frustrations amid contract negotiations with the team mounted.

Robinson’s teammates, including running back Tarik Cohen, receiver Anthony Miller and quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, voiced their desire for the Bears to sign Robinson to an extension.

There was even rumors of a potential trade swirling. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, teams did inquire the Bears about trade opportunities, which the team shot down.

Although it wasn’t surprising teams were asking about a trade given the public contact dispute.

Now, the Bears and have resumed contract talks and are focused on coming to an agreement on an extension that would keep Robinson in Chicago for the foreseeable future, according to Rapoport.

Robinson’s frustrations could be detected in sub tweets in the weeks leading up to this sequence of events. But things certainly hit a boiling point on Tuesday, just one day after the Bears’ improbable fourth-quarter comeback against the Lions.

Arguably the biggest point of contention in contract talks was agreement on how much money Robinson deserved. While the Bears wanted to pay Robinson in the $15 million to $16 million range, Robinson believed he deserved $18 million per year.

While the Bears and Robinson have resumed contract talks, Rapoport says a new deal isn’t imminent as of right now. But it’s certainly a good sign that talks have resumed and Robinson wants to remain in Chicago.

Now, it seems like it’s not a matter of “if” the Bears get a deal done, but when they do.
