Jets injury report: Duane Brown not activated; Amos, Lazard questionable

Jets injury report: Duane Brown not activated; Amos, Lazard questionable

The final injury report is out for the New York Jets for their Week 9 showdown with the Los Angeles Chargers.

One of the key notes from the report is that offensive tackle Duane Brown was not activated quite yet from injured reserve. Brown did practice in full all week, but the Jets are going to give him one more week of rest. He will likely be activated next week.

Linebacker Chazz Surratt is also out for Sunday. He missed all week with an ankle injury. Rookie Zaire Barnes will likely be active for the first time this season as a result.

Two new additions appeared on the report Saturday. Safety Adrian Amos (ankle) and wide receiver Allen Lazard (knee) both suffered injuries and are both questionable for Monday.

Everyone else that was on the report — Mekhi Becton, Irvin Charles, Randall Cobb, Xavier Gipson, Joe Tippmann, Laken Tomlinson — all practiced in full Saturday and have no game designation for Monday. They are good to go.

Zach Wilson finds Allen Lazard for TD and Jets have tied Chiefs

The Jets have come back from 17 down to tie the Chiefs in the third quarter

What looked like a calamity has turned into quite a football game at MetLife.

Zach Wilson and the New York Jets have erased a 17-point deficit to tie the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs in the third quarter.

Wilson threw a TD pass to former Green Bay Packer Allen Lazard and then ran the ball in for the 2-point conversion.

He had thrown 2 TD passes and for 216 yards after one drive into the third quarter.

Mic’d-up video showed how Jets players constantly encouraged Zach Wilson after Aaron Rodgers’ injury

Zach Wilson has some great Jets teammates.

As much as New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers going down with injury sunk hopes for the team’s fans, backup quarterback Zach Wilson had to feel dually overwhelmed by the moment.

After the franchise that drafted him second-overall in the 2021 NFL Draft traded for Rodgers in the offseason, it was as sure of a sign as possible that the team had lost faith in Wilson’s ability to lead the team at present.

However, Rodgers being done for the season has put Wilson in the spotlight once more as he takes back his old job in wake of Rodgers’ injury.

After he threw the Jets’ lone passing touchdown in the game to wide receiver Garrett Wilson, the wideout, fellow wide receiver Allen Lazard and other teammates hyped Zach Wilson up on the sideline and offered him some encouragement.

This is as classy as it gets, as the Jets players had to know the stress Zach Wilson was under as he stepped right back into the spotlight to lead the Jets after such a tough offseason.

The Jets will need Zach Wilson to play as well as he can for the team’s playoff hopes to stay alive. At least on Monday night, he did what he need to for the Jets to get a key division win over the Buffalo Bills.

How Corey Davis’ retirement affects the Jets’ WR depth chart

Corey Davis announced his retirement from the NFL and his departure certainly changes the outlook of the Jets’ depth chart at WR.

Corey Davis has been away from the New York Jets in recent weeks and the veteran wideout announced on Wednesday that he was stepping away from football at 28 years old. While we wish the best for Davis moving forward, his departure does alter the outlook of the Jets’ depth chart at the wide receiver position.

Entering the 2023 season, Davis was in the final year of a three-year, $37.5 million deal that he signed with the Jets in free agency ahead of the 2021 season. Even though the Jets brought in Allen Lazard, Mecole Hardman, and Randall Cobb this offseason, Davis was still slated to have a role in the offense after the team elected to keep him around.

Davis is a versatile wideout who can contribute through the air and as a run blocker, so he would’ve seen the field a decent amount despite the new additions. But with Davis now out of the picture, the roles for certain players will change in 2023.

Garrett Wilson’s role in the offense doesn’t drastically change as he was expected to be the go-to option for Rodgers regardless of the new weapons in the offense. While Lazard signed a contract that indicated he’d have a definitive role in the offense already, he’ll certainly relied upon even more on the field because of his run-blocking ability and experience with Rodgers.

Hardman and Cobb figure to rotate as the No. 3 wide receiver in the offense behind Wilson and Lazard. Who Davis’ exit really affects are the guys who are competing for roster spots. Players like Jason Brownlee, Xavier Gipson and Malik Taylor now have better odds of making the 53-man roster unless the Jets look to improve at the position when other teams are making roster cuts.

Davis was never going to have an extremely prominent role in the offense with a crowded group of pass catchers on the Jets this season. That being said, the depth chart is now shaping up to potentially be Wilson, Lazard, Hardman, and Cobb with Brownlee, Gipson and Taylor seeming like the most likely candidates to make the roster with Davis now gone.

PFF places Jets at No. 20 in receiving corps rankings but calls group ‘one of the deepest’

This ranking is probably more indicative of the vast strength of receiving groups across the league.

Recently, Trevor Sikkema of Pro Football Focus ranked each of the 32 receiving corps in the league. This isn’t just wide receivers. This is running backs and tight ends included as well “if they positively affect the passing game.”

The Jets retooled their wide receivers this offseason with the additions of Allen Lazard, Mecole Hardman and Randall Cobb to join Garrett Wilson, Corey Davis and Denzel Mims, along with trading Elijah Moore to the Cleveland Browns. New York is also still very solid at tight end with Tyler Conklin, C.J, Uzomah, Kenny Yeboah, Jeremy Ruckert and rookie Zack Kuntz.

New York actually checks in at No. 20 on PFF’s list, but don’t let the number fool you. Sikkema still seems pretty high on the group.

Garrett WilsonĀ is a strong start for this exercise, as he earned an impressive 85.9 receiving grade as a rookie. Heā€™ll be joined by newcomersĀ Allen LazardĀ andĀ Mecole Hardman, but the Jets also boastĀ Corey Davis,Ā Denzel MimsĀ andĀ Randall Cobb. Throw in tight endsĀ C.J. UzomahĀ andĀ Tyler Conklin, and this feels like one of the deepest groups in the league.

The Jets being this low in the rankings is probably due to the fact that there are a lot of good receiving corps across the league that are very close to each other in talent.

No matter who was at quarterback, the Jets have a good group of players to catch passes on offense. Fortunately, they’ll be catching passes from Aaron Rodgers, making them look even better.

Robert Saleh says Jets ‘love our current group’ of wide receivers

Do you agree with Saleh?

The Jets were busy adding weapons for quarterback Aaron Rodgers this offseason, including former Packers Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb along with former Chiefs WR Mecole Hardman.

Along with reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson, the Jets have quite a stable at the position — even with trading Elijah Moore to Cleveland and the status of Corey Davis up in the air.

Still, there were some rumblings that maybe the Jets would go after recently released wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. Head coach Robert Saleh seemed to pour cold water on that notion this week.

“We love our current group,” Saleh said. “I know there was some stuff with Odell [Beckham Jr.], but other than that we love our group.”

In a way, it’s hard not to love the group, especially with Rodgers throwing them the football. Garrett Wilson had over 1,100 receiving yards with Zach Wilson, Joe Flacco and Mike White throwing the football. Imagine what he can get with Rodgers.

Rodgers and Lazard formed a strong connection in Green Bay and Cobb and Rodgers are two peas in a pod. For the first time in a while, there’s excitement brewing with the Jets’ offense. Sure, Hopkins would be a major addition, but it wouldn’t be the end of the world if he signs elsewhere — unless he signs with New England. Regardless, this is a fun group that is ready to put on a show.

Allen Lazard clears the air on injury scare during Tuesday’s practice

Allen Lazard took, well, a shot during Tuesday’s practice.

Jets wide receiver Allen Lazard was initially thought to have left the field during Tuesday’s OTA practice and was seen walking off with trainers. Naturally, there was a concern considering it was the first practice open to the media, so it was our first chance to really see the 2023 Jets in action.

Fortunately, Lazard is just fine and took to Twitter to clear the air on what exactly happened to him. He simply took a shot, well, down there.

It almost feels fitting that the first day of media availability for Jets practice had to have some sort of drama, between Lazard and Aaron Rodgers’ injury. Fortunately, everyone is just fine and there is nothing to worry about for the newest offensive pairing for the Jets.

Aaron Rodgers, Breece Hall, Allen Lazard take in Devils-Rangers game

Rodgers, Hall and Lazard are at MSG for the Rangers.

Aaron Rodgers isn’t wasting much time getting acquainted with his buddies and his new surroundings. Not even a week into his time with the Jets, he’s already immersing himself in the New York sports landscape.

Rodgers, running back Breece Hall and wide receiver Allen Lazard all visited Madison Square Garden to take in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference first-round matchup between the New York Rangers and the New Jersey Devils. Just like New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll, the Jets’ trio are rooting on the boys in blue. Hall and Lazard were even rocking Rangers jerseys.

The Rangers are looking for a win to send the series back to New Jersey for a Game 7. We’ll see if the Jets can bring some luck to the Rangers.

6 things the Jets need to do immediately to win a Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers

The Jets have their QB. Here’s how they’ll win a title with him.

Aaron Rodgers is headed to the Big Apple.

At 39 years old, the four-time MVP and future First Ballot Hall of Famer will attempt to win his second career Super Bowl with the New York Jets. It’s a blockbuster move for the NFL we won’t stop feeling the reverberations from for a long time.

But as much as the Jets feel they can win a championship with Rodgers — and they probably can — their path to a title hasn’t been completely paved.

As New York heads into the 2023 season with its first legitimate franchise quarterback, here’s a six-step plan to address right away. If the Jets want to win it all with Rodgers, they will do well to heed this advice.

Allen Lazard tells TMZ Aaron Rodgers and Nathaniel Hackett were key pieces to puzzle for joining Jets

Allen Lazard tells TMZ Aaron Rodgers and Nathaniel Hackett were key pieces to puzzle for joining Jets

The Jets made a pretty big splash in free agency, signing wide receiver Allen Lazard to a four-year worth $11 million per year. It seemed like there was a good chance Lazard was coming to New York regardless of the quarterback situation, but as he told TMZ Sports recently, two key pieces to the puzzle in terms of Lazard ultimately deciding to sign with the Jets were offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and Aaron Rodgers.

Particularly Hackett, as Lazard also alluded to during his introductory press conference with the Jets. “He’s someone that I have worked with four out of the past five seasons I’ve been in the league,” said Lazard about Hackett, who first worked with Lazard in Jacksonville in 2018.

It also helped that his quarterback in Green Bay is very likely to join at some point as well. “Knowing that Aaron [Rodgers] was very highly interested to go to the Jets kind of gave me the peace of mind to be able to go there.”

Lazard has also said before that the Jets could have a high ceiling with Rodgers under center and that the Jets could be a Super Bowl contender once he joins the mix. You can tell deep down Lazard would love to be reunited with his old Packers buddy in New York. It’s only a matter of time.
