Where Texas lands in 247Sports’ all-time winningest programs ranking

Where does Texas rank among all-time winningest programs?

Long before Texas tried to be “back,” the program was one of college football’s most successful.

The process of becoming a national contender again has been tough on the program, as after the end of Mack Brown’s tenure the school has now hired three different coaches, with two of them getting the boot.

Prior to parting ways with Brown, Texas won a national championship and was constantly considered one of the top teams in the nation. Before the Brown era, it was the Darrell K Royal tenure, which was by far Texas’ most successful time, as they won three championships under him while accumulating the most wins in school history with 167.

247Sports recently ranked the all-time winningest programs based on their recent success, and as you could imagine, Texas saw a decline in their ranking. The Longhorns now land at No. 6. Here was their breakdown about Texas:

Texas took a step back on this updated ranking of winningest programs after a tumultuous first season for Steve Sarkisian in 2021 that included a six-game losing streak amid a 5-7 finish. He is tasked with bringing the Longhorns back into the national title picture as one of college football’s most storied programs. Not since Mack Brown’s tenure have the Longhorns competed for a championship at the highest level. Brown coached from 1998–2013, compiling an overall record of 158–48 (.767), second only to Darrell Royal for most wins at the program (167-47-5; .774). Royal coached 20 seasons and was a three-time national champion with the Longhorns from 1957–76. Since Brown’s departure, Texas is just 53-46 overall since the start of the 2014 season.

Texas ranked above schools such as USC, Penn State, and Nebraska while trailing schools like Oklahoma, Michigan, and Notre Dame among others.

However, with the stellar recruiting class Steve Sarkisian has brought in, with six high level offensive linemen and what could be the best quarterback prospect ever, Texas should have a bounce back season.

The Longhorns are looking to right the ship after a dreadful 5-7 season, and have a conference championship on their mind.
