NBA Twitter reacts to Josh Giddey’s Rising Stars Challenge performance

Josh Giddey completes night one of two in terms of All-Star weekend participation.

Oklahoma City Thunder rookie guard Josh Giddey’s night ended prematurely for the Rising Stars Challenge as Team Worthy lost to Team Isiah, 50-49. Giddey finished the game with two points, nine rebounds and six assists.

A very Giddey-esque statline I must say as the guard is averaging 12.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 6.4 assists in 53 games this season. At the unofficial halfway mark of the season, Giddey has collected four triple-doubles that include a current three-game streak.

While Giddey’s Friday is done for All-Star festivities, he still has Saturday night to look forward to as he will participate in the Taco Bell Skills Challenge.

Rockets, NBA Twitter react as Jalen Green puts on a Rising Stars show

His team lost in a heartbreaker, but Rockets rookie Jalen Green put on an absolute show in the NBA’s Rising Stars tournament at All-Star Weekend. Here’s how fans reacted to Friday’s showing.

Even on his third game in three consecutive nights, Houston Rockets rookie Jalen Green was ready to put on a show at All-Star Weekend.

In the first game of Friday’s Rising Stars tournament, the No. 2 overall pick from the 2021 NBA draft was electric as a scorer from 3-point range and at the rim, as shown by a series of highlight dunks.

Team Worthy, which Green participated on, ultimately lost in a heartbreaker, 50-49 (box score). But Green scored a game-high 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting (61.5%), including 4-of-9 on 3-pointers (44.4%), and he was the best player on an extremely talented floor. The newly turned 20-year-old also had 2 steals, 2 assists, and a blocked shot.

Here’s a look at highlights and how NBA Twitter reacted in real-time to Green’s exploits. Green will have another opportunity to draw attention when he competes at Saturday’s slam dunk contest, which will also take place at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in downtown Cleveland.

Three young Rockets (Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun, Jae’Sean Tate) are taking the big stage Friday at the NBA’s Rising Stars tournament for All-Star Weekend. Here’s our live blog on how they’re doing.

2022 NBA Rising Stars tournament: When and how to watch the young Rockets

Rockets rookies Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun, along with second-year forward Jae’Sean Tate, are all taking part in Friday’s Rising Stars tournament at the NBA’s 2022 All-Star Weekend.

Second-year forward Jae’Sean Tate and rookies Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun will represent the Houston Rockets at the NBA’s 2022 All-Star weekend. The rookies and sophomores in Friday’s official Rising Stars tournament in Cleveland were chosen by current NBA assistant coaches, with each of the league’s 30 teams submitting one ballot per staff.

Green, the No. 2 pick by the Rockets from the 2021 NBA draft, will also participate in Saturday’s All-Star slam dunk contest.

KJ Martin, Josh Christopher seemingly disappointed by All-Star weekend exclusions

Young Rockets players KJ Martin and Josh Christopher weren’t happy to be excluded from the NBA’s Rising Stars tournament and the slam dunk contest at 2022 All-Star Weekend.

Second-year forward Jae’Sean Tate and rookies Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun will represent the Houston Rockets in the Rising Stars competition at the NBA’s 2022 All-Star weekend in Cleveland, while Green will also reportedly take part in Saturday’s slam dunk contest.

Two players who could make a case for those types of honors, but aren’t currently on either lineup, are second-year forward KJ Martin and rookie guard Josh Christopher. Each took to Twitter shortly after Tuesday night’s announcements and seemed to express relative displeasure.

In both cases, it was likely a numbers game, with the NBA looking to spread the wealth among as many of its 30 teams as possible. No team has more than Houston’s three Rising Stars representatives, so even if Martin or Christopher was more deserving than another selection, they may have missed out due to the NBA trying to broaden its team pool.

Similarly, in the dunk contest, only four players were selected — and the NBA probably didn’t want two being from the same team. Even so, the high-flying Martin had a case, since he ranks in the NBA’s top 20 in dunks this season despite averaging under 20 minutes per game.

It’s worth noting, of course, that other players could withdraw from either the Rising Stars tournament or the dunk contest at a later date due to injuries or other logistics considerations. Thus, it’s plausible that Martin and/or Christopher might still be added to one of those events.

For now, though, it doesn’t appear that either will take part in the Feb. 18 and 19 activities. Here’s a sampling of how each player responded to the news, which they might use as motivation in upcoming games.

Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun, Jae’Sean Tate to represent Rockets in NBA’s Rising Stars tournament

Second-year forward Jae’Sean Tate and rookies Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun will represent the Houston Rockets at the NBA’s 2022 All-Star weekend via the Rising Stars event on Friday, Feb. 18. The rookies and sophomores were chosen by current NBA assistant coaches, with each of the league’s 30 teams submitting one ballot per staff.

Twelve rookies, 12 sophomores, and four G League Ignite players were selected. The new Rising Stars format splits players into four seven-man teams, with each competing in a three-game mini-tournament.

Tournament games will be played to a target score, with each game won on a shot or free throw instead of the clock running out. The first two games will be played to 50 points, and the final game will be played to 25.

The Rockets will join Detroit (Cade Cunningham, Saddiq Bey, Isaiah Stewart) and Orlando (Jalen Suggs, Franz Wagner, Cole Anthony) as one of only three NBA teams to have three representatives in the contest.

Rockets rookie Jalen Green to headline 2022 NBA Slam Dunk Contest field

Rockets rookie Jalen Green will join Orlando’s Cole Anthony, Golden State’s Juan Toscano-Anderson, and New York’s Obi Toppin in the 2022 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, per Shams Charania.

Houston Rockets rookie Jalen Green is expected to join Orlando’s Cole Anthony, Golden State’s Juan Toscano-Anderson, and New York’s Obi Toppin in the NBA’s 2022 slam dunk contest at All-Star weekend in Cleveland on Feb. 19, per Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Green, the No. 2 overall pick from the 2021 NBA draft, is Houston’s first participant in the dunk contest since Chase Budinger in 2012. Other Rockets to have participated historically include Steve Francis in 2002 and 2000, Kenny Smith in 1993 and 1991, and Ralph Sampson in 1984. No Rockets player has ever won the flagship event.

A 6-foot-6 guard with explosive athleticism, Green is averaging 14.1 points and 3.3 rebounds in 30.1 minutes per game this season. He missed nearly a month of action from late November until late December with a hamstring injury, but that appears to have fully healed, as evidenced by his apparent choice to take part in the NBA’s dunk contest.

Toppin lost in the final round of the 2021 dunk contest to Portland’s Anfernee Simons. For Green, Toscano-Anderson, and Anthony, it will be the first time that each has participated in the dunk contest.

All-Star Weekend 2021 a potential sacrifice of next season, shortened schedule

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported yesterday that the All-Star Weekend is a candidate to be sacrificed next season.

[jwplayer 5SHLtbNs-z6KDnl0B]

All of the latest reporting about the upcoming NBA season suggests that there will be a quicker turnaround than most expected when the season ended 13 days ago inside the Walt Disney World bubble, as the Los Angeles Lakers lifted the trophy for the 17th time in the franchise’s history. Now as they look to defend their title, it appears the Lakers will have to follow the longest season in NBA history with the shortest offseason. There also is another casualty likely for the upcoming season: the 2021 All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis. Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported that no final decision has been made but that it’s on the table to get axed.

Given that coronavirus cases are steadily rising across the country and it seems impossible to know when a vaccine will be readily available, hosting a massive party for people from all over the country and the world, such as All-Star Weekend, seems inadvisable and irresponsible. It also seems highly unlikely that the league will allow fans in arenas, eliminating yet another key aspect of what All-Star weekend is about.
