Deiveson Figueiredo dismisses Alexandre Pantoja’s weight cut concerns for potential UFC title rematch

Deiveson Figueiredo says he’s capable of safely cutting back down to flyweight for a UFC title rematch with Alexandre Pantoja.

[autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag]’s priorities remain in the UFC bantamweight division, but the only thing standing between him and a return to flyweight to rematch champ [autotag]Alexandre Pantoja[/autotag] is an official offer.

In the aftermath of his UFC 310 title defense over Kai Asakura this past Saturday, Pantoja (29-5 MMA, 13-3 UFC) said he would be interested in a second fight with Figueiredo (24-4-1 MMA, 13-4-1 UFC), who beat him by unanimous decision at UFC 240 in July 2019.

However, Pantoja said he had concerns about Figueiredo’s ability to safely cut back down to the 125-pound division. Figueiredo is a two-time titleholder at flyweight, but he moved up to 135 pounds in December 2023 and has since gone 3-1. The Brazilian said the physical task of moving back down would be a non-issue.

“If I want to come down to 125, I can do it,” Figueiredo told MMA Junkie through an interpreter. “I’m very disciplined. When I want something, it’s not a problem. I think that Pantoja knows I’m a complicated matchup, complicated style, complicated game for him. I saw him challenge a guy who is retired and doesn’t want to fight anymore, so I just left that option open to him and to the UFC if that’s something they want to do.

“Would it be some sacrifice for me to get down to that weight? Yes. But I could do it. But I am at the command of the UFC if they want to do that fight. I am open to it. All they have to do is send the contract.”

Although Figueiredo has seemingly comfortably moved on to a new chapter of his career at bantamweight, the idea of a rematch with Pantoja has come out of a degree of desperation due to his dominance over the weight class.

Much has changed for both men since they last met, but Figueiredo still sees himself as the better man.

“I don’t think that Pantoja improved that much,” Figueiredo said. “His striking is still about what it is. He’s a very good grappler. I’m also from jiu-jitsu. I think that a fight between me and him, we could both submit each other. It would be down to small mistakes one or the other made. I’m not sure that the UFC wants this fight to happen, because I am definitely capable taking that belt away.”

Until a decision about Pantoja’s next opponent is made, Figueiredo said he will proceed with business as usual. He is just weeks removed from a key loss to Petr Yan at UFC Fight Night 248 in a bout that could’ve potentially landed him a title shot. He’s still not far from gold, and a potential chance to become the 10th fighter in UFC history to capture titles across two weight classes.

That, for now, remains Figueiredo’s primary source of motivation.

“I’m focused on being the 135 champ,” Figueiredo said. “I have some adjustments to make. The 135 title, I’m focused on that. I’m going to make some adjustments to my game and reinvent myself and get that title.”

UFC champ Alexandre Pantoja: Kai Kara-France ‘makes most sense’ next

With Demetrious Johnson an unrealistic option, Alexandre Pantoja discusses his next plans for the UFC flyweight title.

UFC flyweight champion [autotag]Alexandre Pantoja[/autotag] doesn’t see too many options for his next title defense.

Pantoja (29-5 MMA, 13-3 UFC) surprisingly called out Demetrious Johnson after retaining his belt with a second-round submission of newcomer Kai Asakura this past Saturday at UFC 310, but Johnson isn’t interested in coming out of retirement.

A willing and eager contender is [autotag]Kai Kara-France[/autotag] (24-11 MMA, 7-4 UFC), who snapped his two-fight losing skid with a first-round TKO of Steve Erceg at UFC 305. Despite Kara-France having lost two of his past three fights, Pantoja doesn’t see a better candidate at 125 pounds.

Pantoja already has a win over Kara-France, but it came in an exhibition bout during Season 24 of “The Ultimate Fighter.” He admits that both fighters have grown since then.

“I’m differentt, he’s different,” Pantoja said of Kara-France on “The Ariel Helwani Show.” “Oh yeah (I’m interested). For now, that’s the fight that most makes sense. In the last three fights, he’s lost twice. But for now, after what I’ve done to my division, everything doesn’t make sense anymore.

“I fight the No. 1, No. 2, top 10, then you bring in someone from somewhere else. I think everybody has a chance right now. Very nice fight. Yeah, Kai Kara-France is a very exciting fight. That’s the someone that’s going to bring me to another level.”

Pantoja is also open to testing his grappling against undefeated Muhammad Mokaev, who recently parted ways with the UFC. Deiveson Figueiredo, who beat Pantoja in July 2019, expressed interest in dropping back down to 125 pounds to fight him.

However, with Kara-France being the only active flyweight out of the three options, that’s who the champion thinks makes sense the most for him next.

Spinning Back Clique LIVE: Pantoja, Rakhmonov’s big UFC 310 wins, UFC 311 & 312 title booking, more

On this week’s episode of Spinning Back Clique, the panel reacts to Alexandre Pantoja’s title win at UFC 310, recent title bookings, more.

Check out this week’s “Spinning Back Clique,” MMA Junkie’s weekly live show that takes a spin through the biggest topics in mixed martial arts.

This week’s panel of Brian “Goze” Garcia, Matt Wells, and Nolan King will join host “Gorgeous” George Garcia live at noon ET (9 a.m. PT) to discuss and debate the following topics:

  • [autotag]Alexandre Pantoja[/autotag] defended his UFC flyweight title in stellar fashion, submitting former Rizin FF champion Kai Asakura in the main event of UFC 310. After the fight, Pantoja called out former UFC flyweight champion [autotag]Demetrious Johnson[/autotag]. Could Johnson be convinced to return? If not, what’s next for Pantoja? Where does this loss leave Asakura? We discuss.
  • Pantoja wasn’t the only one with a big win on Saturday. [autotag]Shavkat Rakhmonov[/autotag] cemented himself as the No. 1 contender at 170 pounds with a decision win over fellow top contender [autotag]Ian Machado Garry[/autotag]. With a UFC title fight on the horizon, what are Rakhmonov’s chances against Belal Muhammad? How much interest could this fight draw? We react to Rakhmonov’s big win and what could be next for Machado Garry.
  • Plenty of other things went down at UFC 310 outside the main and co-main event. Alexander Volkov lost a controversial and highly-debated split decision to Ciryl Gane. Kron Gracie was viciously knocked out in his MMA return. And veterans Anthony Smith, Chris Weidman, and Clay Guida all took defeats – which could mark the end of their MMA careers. We react to it all.
  • The UFC got busy booking their next two pay-per-view shows. This past week, the promotion revealed the main and co-main event bouts for UFC 311 and UFC 312. A lightweight and bantamweight bout pitting Islam Makhachev vs. Arman Tsarukyan, and Merab Dvalishvili and Umar Nurmagomedov is set to headline UFC 311 on Jan. 18 in Los Angeles. Also, a middleweight and women’s strawweight championship bout headline UFC 312 on Feb. 8 in Sydney, as Dricus Du Plessis rematches Sean Strickland, and Tatiana Suarez finally gets her long-awaited shot at Zhang Weili. We reat to the championship bookings.
  • Things heated up outside the octagon these last few days. Dvalishvili and Nurmagomedov had to be separated backstage on Thursday, and two days later, Dvalishvili and Dennis Buzukja got physical with a fan while walking through the arena at UFC 310. Buzukja was seen punching a fan. Nate Diaz and Islam Makhachev also threw things at each other before getting separated by security, and Jamahall Hill confronted Alex Pereira at the UFC Performance Institute. What’s going on? Is the UFC properly handling security? We discuss.
  • This coming Saturday, the UFC closes their 2024 with a Fight Night event in Tampa, Fla. UFC on ESPN 63 features a key welterweight bout between former interim champion Colby Covington taking on rising title contender Joaquim Buckley. Who will win? Could the winner set himself up for a title shot? We break it all down.

Alexandre Pantoja explains Demetrious Johnson callout at UFC 310, responds to $2 million tweet

Alexandre Pantoja responds to Demetrious Johnson’s disinterest in a UFC comeback.

LAS VEGAS – “Like a GOAT.”

As [autotag]Alexandre Pantoja[/autotag] grabbed hold of the microphone during his UFC 310 post-fight news conference Saturday at T-Mobile Arena, those are the first words that were out of his mouth.

Pantoja (29-5 MMA, 13-3 UFC) admits it’s been a learning curve to build his legacy and, more so, his brand. But after he slept Kai Asakura (21-5 MMA, 0-1 UFC) in Saturday’s main event, his callout was ready – and it surprised a lot of people.

“I feel I’m tied with more victories in that division,” Pantoja told MMA Junkie and other reporters. “Then, I figured out maybe that’s why I talked about Demetrious Johnson. I’m sorry if I’m wrong to say about that. All my respect for him, but I’m sorry again. I did that. I cleaned the division. I beat the No. 1, the No. 2 multiple times. The UFC bring me another guy, another champ for all across the world. I finished him. That is the fight that makes sense for me. The flyweight is so different right now. The time that Demetrious Johnson fight, it was not like that. My last four fights, I fought with a Mexican, Australian, American, and Japanese. Things change.

“You have all the good fighters all across the world. Times like now are so hard to keep this belt. Right now, in times like that, I don’t know. Do me and Makhachev have three title defenses in the octagon right now. But that’s tough times right now. It’s not like before. But all my respect to Demetrious Johnson. I respect him. I love him because he opens all the doors for us. But that fight is what I want. If you say it to me, ‘What do you want for Christmas?’ That’s what I want.”

[lawrence-related id=2791898,2791135]

Pantoja’s callout didn’t fall on deaf ears. Johnson (25-4-1) quickly responded indicating he doesn’t have plans to return to fighting.

“Guys I got offered 2 million dollars to fight!!” Johnson wrote on X. “I turned it down I don’t care to fight anymore YouTube video dropping soon”

Johnson, 38, retired in early September and has not competed since May 2023. It’s unclear if he’s still contractually tied to ONE Championship.

But Pantoja thinks Johnson’s tweet might miss his point. It’s not about money for Pantoja, but rather further building his legacy – something Johnson could potentially do with a return fight, as well.

“That’s crazy because it’s not about the money,” Pantoja said. “I don’t fight more for money. I fight to prove myself. I’m the best of the best. I think everybody has to do that. Of course, you need your bills. You have to pay your mortgages and everything. We’re here to figure out who’s the best of the best. That’s what I did tonight. I’m super glad UFC gave me money to defend this belt. I can pay my bills. I can put my kids in a good place.

“I don’t fight for just money. Demetrious Johnson is not about money. It’s about to see who is the best of the best. I just say that because I see he is retired. I don’t know about his contract any more. I don’t know he have something (where) he can’t come to UFC any more, but it’s not about money, brother. It’s about legacy. It’s about to see who is the best.

“That’s how I live. That’s why I wake up every day – to try to be the best.”

Dana White enthused by Alexandre Pantoja, RIZIN relationship, and possibilities after UFC 310

Former RIZIN champion Kai Asakura came up short at UFC 310, but that doesn’t mean Dana White isn’t enthused by his presence.

LAS VEGAS – The UFC 310 main event wasn’t just a thrilling flyweight battle. It also was a rather unique moment, at least in more recent times for the promotion.

Flyweight champion [autotag]Alexandre Pantoja[/autotag] defended his title against RIZIN import Kai Asakura with a second-round submission at T-Mobile Arena – and he impressed UFC CEO Dana White in the process.

“There are two sides to this story,” White told MMA Junkie and other reporters. “You take a guy like Asakura, who came into the UFC your first time. We talk about the jitters and all the things that happened, your first time fighting in a cage, etc., etc. – and he came in guns-ablazing, flying knee right away. Then, Pantoja, how he put the pressure back on him – who in this room didn’t want to see three more rounds of that? It would’ve been amazing. It was a great fight and Pantoja went out and dominated. … He’s awesome. He looked incredible tonight.”

White wasn’t the only promoter that sat cage-side for the title fight between the Brazilian and Japanese stars. RIZIN president Nobuyuki Sakakibara also watched. The former PRIDE show-runner met with his former rival White before and after the event.

While it’s unclear what RIZIN’s involvement, if any, there was to Asakura’s signing with the UFC, White likes the idea of having a good relationship to collaborate and build the market in similar ways.

“We did it tonight,” White said. “He had a good performance. I would love to do it. Having these up-and-coming Japanese fighters, we were just talking in my room. He’s saying now in Japan, all of these young guys want to be the first one to win a world title in the UFC. That’s exciting.

“There’s such a rich history of MMA in Japan. Some of the best days of my life were our rivalry with PRIDE. It was a really fun time in my life and in his too. We were talking about it, so the answer is yes to all that. I’d love to go do a Fight Night there, too.”
