Romanov on the fight’s key moment

“(My submission) was very close, but was very slippery. I lost my grip, but it doesn’t matter. I have shown today that for me, it doesn’t matter: I can (win standing up), too.”

Romanov on his cardio questions

“The biggest question every time for my side from all the people is that I have a big problem with my cardio. You’re wrong, guys. Now I’m in great shape because I work with a super crazy professional team. I have crazy support in my house – my kids, my family, my wife, my parents, and if a man gives all his life in the hands of God, nothing can stop him.”

Romanov on what he wants next

Derrick Lewis

“I hope (I get a new contract), because I feel that I am just in the beginning of my biggest jump to the top 10. For me, it doesn’t matter who will be my next opponent. (I still want to fight Derrick Lewis after we were rebooked) because for me, it’s a very interesting match because he’s this a name. He’s a massive, strong guy and for me, that’s going to be a very good test.”

UFC splits Edmonton co-main event: Derrick Lewis, Alexandr Romanov get new opponents

In a rare move, the UFC has split a previously-finalized co-main event into two new fights.

UFC Edmonton has a new co-main event, though both of its original participants remain on the card against different opponents.

“The Black Beast” [autotag]Derrick Lewis[/autotag] will now face kickboxer [autotag]Jhonata Diniz[/autotag] at the UFC Fight Night event Nov. 2 at Rogers Place. Additionally, [autotag]Alexandr Romanov[/autotag] now gets [autotag]Rodrigo Nascimento[/autotag].

Four people with knowledge of the changes recently informed MMA Junkie of the new matchups but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. The bouts were first reported by Laerte Viana.

It’s unclear why the initial co-main event of Lewis (28-12 MMA, 19-10 UFC) vs. Romanov (17-3 MMA, 6- 3 UFC) was split. However, the Lewis vs. Diniz (8-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) fight marks a striking-heavy battle on paper.

Lewis has won two of his last three fights. Despite the ups and downs over a decade-plus in the UFC, Lewis has remained one of the most popular fighters on the promotion’s roster.

A former standout kickboxer, Diniz steps into a massive opportunity in just his third UFC fight. After winning on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2023, Diniz has defeated Austen Lane and Karl Williams thus far in the UFC.

Romanov aims to turn things around after losing three of his most recent four bouts. The three defeats in that stretch are the only of his career.

Nascimento (11-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) competed in his first UFC headliner when he was finished with strikes by Lewis in May. The defeat snapped a three-fight winning streak.

With the change, the UFC Fight Night lineup for Nov. 2 includes:

  • Rose Namajunas vs. Erin Blanchfield
  • Derrick Lewis vs. Jhonata Diniz
  • Rodrigo Nascimento vs. Alexandr Romanov
  • Ariane da Silva vs. Jasmine Jasudavicius
  • Marc-Andre Barriault vs. Dustin Stoltzfus
  • Jamey-Lyn Horth vs. Ivana Petrovic
  • Chad Anheliger vs. Cody Gibson

Derrick Lewis added to UFC Edmonton vs. Alexandr Romanov

UFC contender Derrick Lewis is headed to the Great White North.

“The Black Beast” is back on the books.

[autotag]Derrick Lewis[/autotag] will return to fight [autotag]Alexandr Romanov[/autotag] in a three-round heavyweight bout at the UFC’s return event in Edmonton, Dana White announced Thursday on Sportsnet. The event takes place Nov. 2 at Rogers Place.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup recently informed MMA Junkie of the booking but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Lewis (28-12 MMA, 19-10 UFC) has won two of his most recent three outings. He most recently competed in a May headliner when he finished Rodrigo Nascimento with strikes and then mooned the crowd in celebration.

Romanov (17-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC) looks to bounce back from a quick submission loss to Almeida in June. The defeat was his third in his most recent four outings. Romanov had not lost as a professional prior to that stretch.

With the addition, the UFC Edmonton lineup includes:

  • Rose Namajunas vs. Erin Blanchfield
  • Derrick Lewis vs. Alexandr Romanov
  • Ariane da Silva vs. Jasmine Jasudavicius
  • Marc-Andre Barriault vs. Dustin Stoltzfus
  • Jamey-Lyn Horth vs. Ivana Petrovic

Dana White announces UFC Edmonton with Erin Blanchfield vs. Rose Namajunas main event, more

A UFC women’s flyweight main event is headed to Edmonton.

The UFC is headed back to “The Great White North” and this time it’s Rogers Place and Edmonton, Alberta that will get an event.

A UFC Fight Night event is officially scheduled there for Nov. 2, UFC CEO Dana White announced on Sportsnet, along with a main event of [autotag]Rose Namajunas[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Erin Blanchfield[/autotag].

Blanchfield (12-2 MMA, 6-1 UFC) looks to rebound from her first UFC loss, a fairly one-sided unanimous decision defeat to Manon Fiorot in March. After the defeat, Blanchfield told MMA Junkie she hoped a Namajunas fight would materialize, an now her wish has been granted.

Namajunas (13-6 MMA, 11-5 UFC) enters the bout off back-to-back wins over Amanda Ribas and Tracy Cortez. She’s 2-1 since returning to flyweight in 2021. The loss during that stretch was a split decision vs. Fiorot.

Also on the card will be a heavyweight co-headliner between [autotag]Derrick Lewis[/autotag] and [autotag]Alexandr Romanov[/autotag].

Four additional bouts that all included Canadians were announced Thursday include [autotag]Ariane da Silva[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Jasmine Jasudavicius[/autotag], [autotag]Marc-Andre Barriault[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Dustin Stoltzfus[/autotag], [autotag]Jamey-Lyn Horth[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Ivana Petrovic[/autotag], and [autotag]Chad Anheliger[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Cody Gibson[/autotag].

‘Natural heavy guy’ Alexandr Romanov says weight was not big consideration before UFC 302

UFC 302 fighter Alexandr Romanov has fluctuated weight greatly in recent fights. So what’s the plan for Jailton Almeida?

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – In the heavyweight division, there’s a 60-pound range for fighters to locate their optimal poundage there within.

While many heavyweights typically stick within the same few-pound range, [autotag]Alexandr Romanov[/autotag] has fluctuated greatly in his UFC tenure. Sometimes weighing less than 240 pounds, but more times tipping the scales around the 265-pound heavyweight limit, Romanov’s weight has garnered attention for its unpredictable nature.

For Romanov (17-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC), however, he’s not as concerned with his weight as some outside observers are. While he didn’t reveal his exact expected weight for Friday ahead of Saturday’s UFC 302, Romanov is fighting a lighter-weight opponent in Jailton Almeida.

“I’m not focused on his weight,” Romanov told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a pre-fight news conference Wednesday. “I’m just focused on myself. I’m a natural heavy guy. I don’t need to make something to put some weight on. This camp was perfect. I have a very good diet guy. I have a very good team of professional guys around me. This Saturday will be very interesting.”

Almeida (20-3 MMA, 6-1 UFC) is a grapple-heavy opponent, but Romanov is a grapple-heavy guy. Romanov is confident his preparation was on point, and his skillset should provide issues for Almeida.

“Here in the UFC, we have a lot of good wrestlers, a lot of good grapplers,” Romanov said. “Everybody is different. You can take somebody down 100 times in the first round. But after that, you don’t have enough power to keep him in the clinch. It’s all about professionalism, just unity [sic] and keeping your tank and… (being) very smart on distance.”
