WATCH: Alex Smith’s wife posts incredible video documenting QB’s recovery

Former Chiefs QB Alex Smith has been through a lot and this video shows the progress he’s made as he finally returns to football work.

Former Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith is just over a year removed from suffering a devastating broken leg with the Washington Redskins.

It’s been a long road, but Smith has made serious strides in his rehabilitation. He’s now allowed to work on some football stuff like being able to run, drop back and throw. On Monday, Smith’s wife, Elizabeth, took to Instagram to share a video documenting the yearlong recovery and rehab. Check it out:

“November 18th… 1 Year and so much to be grateful for,” Elizabeth wrote in the photo caption.

Playing in the NFL again is still the goal for her husband, and he still has a few steps to go in the process before he could return to game action. For now, he’s doing what he can and taking everything one day at a time. In the meantime, he’s helping out in the Washington QB room as best he can.

At practice recently, he was spotted snapping the ball to rookie Dwayne Haskins during individual drills.

Washington fans are hopeful that as Smith continues his recovery, he can impart every piece of wisdom to Haskins that he’s accumulated in his 13-year NFL career, just as he did in Kansas City with Patrick Mahomes.

Alex Smith is anxious to get back on the field and play some football. But the Washington Redskins quarterback is also making sure he’s helping out rookie Dwayne Haskins as much as he can.

Wednesday, Smith was seen on the field working with Haskins, per video shot by JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington.

And Haskins hasn’t been shy about praising the veteran on social media. But Finlay also caught a brief quote from the rookie: “I really appreciate him since he’s been here with me trying to help me.”

Haskins is the starter for the rest of this season and the Redskins would be wise to let him ease through the growing pains as the games unfold.

Looking ahead to next year, Haskins and Smith are the only two guys slated to be under contract at the position. Smith’s recovery and whether he ends up getting on a football field again will heavily shake up the Resdskins offseason one way or another.

Monday marked exactly one year since Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith fractured his lower leg in gruesome fashion against the Houston Texans, putting his career in the NFL in major doubt.

Looking back, he’s made remarkable progress.

After undergoing 17 surgeries and numerous infections, Smith is now running, throwing and working on other football preparations. At one point it was looking like Smith would never play football again after that fateful day; now it seems likely that he will take the field once again.

“I’m working on my own, doing some of that stuff, so it’s kind of the next phase in this,” Smith said, via Redskins.com. “It just feels good to be able to run and drop and throw.”

The details surrounding Smith’s recovery have been secretive over the past 12 months, but this past summer he declared that returning to the NFL was still the plan.

“I’ve never seen anything like the effort he’s pouring into his rehab,” interim head coach Bill Callahan said via Redskins.com. “It’s so impressive, and for him to be going out there in the stages he’s gone through, he’s got the ultimate respect from all of us.”

While there is still a long road to climb before he can put on a uniform once again and step out onto the field, the last 12 months have shown that Smith has the determination to do it and little will stand in his way.

“I’m hopeful for that,” Smith said. “I hope I never forget what this has been like to go through. I’m anxious to get back.”

Judging by the success he saw early in the 2018 season, fans of the Redskins are anxious to see him back as well.

Dwayne Haskins shares a heartfelt message for Alex Smith

Dwayne Haskins had a notable comment about Alex Smith.

Recently, Alex Smith’s family posted a video of what he’s been through over the course of the past year since his gruesome on-field injury.

And as seen in the tweet below, current Washington Redskins starting quarterback Dwayne Haskins added his own heartfelt message to the viral post, stating how thankful he is to have the veteran as a teammate.

It’s no secret Smith has done whatever he can to be around the team during his rehab and has been instrumental in helping not only Haskins, but a veteran like Case Keenum.

It has been about a year since Smith suffered the injury and his future with the team and in football itself remains a question mark. But as Haskins notes, Smith’s impact remains strong in the interim.

Alex Smith’s wife posts inspiring video of QB’s progress a year after devastating leg injury

Its been one year since Smith had his leg broken on a play.

It was a year ago that Alex Smith suffered a horrifying leg injury, one that had Washington Redskins alumnus Joe Theismann comparing it to his leg break that ended his career.

Since then, we’ve learned that Smith has had a long road to recovery, including 17 surgeries, although he and his family had some fun with his leg as a Halloween costume prop last month.

Smith’s wife Elizabeth marked the year anniversary on Instagram with a touching video showing photos and videos of Smith over the last 12 months in which he’s gotten back to walking and training again. It’s incredible to see it all together in one minute:

“November 18th,” Smith wrote in the caption. “1 Year and so much to be grateful for.”

The 365 days since Alex Smith’s horrific injury have felt like an eternity

It’s been 365 days since Alex Smith saw his life changed for the worse, but it’s felt like an eternity for fans of the Washington Redskins.

Exactly one year ago today, all was well for the Washington Redskins.

The team was 6-3 with a top spot in the NFC East and a clear path toward a playoff berth.

What happened next changed not only the course of Washington’s season, but completely altered the path of Alex Smith’s career and put into motion the wheels of change for the Redskins franchise.

In the third quarter of a game against the Houston Texans, Smith dropped back to pass. Pressure came, and Smith’s leg was rolled up on, resulting in a compound fracture that would place his career in jeopardy. The Redskins would end up losing the game 23-21, which would kick off a brutal 365 days in which they would only win two of the next 16 games.

Since Smith went down on that fateful day — one that bore eerily similar circumstances to when Joe Theismann suffered a gruesome broken leg in 1985 — the Redskins have seen six different starting quarterbacks take the field, all of whom have faced insurmountable criticism. The need for a new answer at the position led Daniel Snyder and Bruce Allen to select a QB with their first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, a player who has yet to find his footing in the league. They’ve also seen a longtime head coach fired, and an interim flirting with the idea of being ousted as well.

In his first year with the team, Smith was off to a hot start and looked to be the answer to Washington’s woeful stretch. He ended up being just another chapter in the book of misery and misfortune. In the months after the injury, Smith has had a tough road getting back to the point where he can walk under his own power, and multiple infections and surgeries have slowed the recovery. However, he continues to be determined to play football again, no matter how unlikely it seemed a year ago.

As for the Washington Redskins, they’re still looking for an answer at the QB position, anyone who can bring the hope and success that Smith brought for nine games in 2018. It may have only been 365 days since he took the field for the Redskins, but it’s felt like an eternity, and there’s no end in sight.
