Sean Strickland trash talk? Alex Pereira says it could be a telling sign at UFC 276

Alex Pereira expects chatter at UFC 276 but plans to use it as affirmation that things aren’t well with his opponent.

All eyes are seemingly on [autotag]Alex Pereira[/autotag] as he enters UFC 276, an event in which he can earn a shot at middleweight champion Israel Adesanya if the stars align.

Maybe the general public’s conversation is overlooking his title eliminator matchup vs. [autotag]Sean Strickland[/autotag] a bit, but Pereira (5-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) says he isn’t. Although Strickland(25-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) hasn’t wowed him, Pereira recognizes the threat.

“Not exactly impressed, but I paid attention to him,” Pereira recently told MMA Junkie using a translator. “After our fight was booked I checked his fights. He’s dangerous, talented, has been showing his skills and potential, and I need to be alert to that.”

While Pereira’s two UFC fights have already escalated him to the doorstep of title contention, Strickland has slowly but surely built a six-fight winning streak – and a name for himself in the process. Over the past few years, Strickland has meshed his victories inside the cage with controversial comments outside of it. Pereira has heard about Strickland’s persona but doesn’t really pay attention.

“To be honest with you, I don’t check that all that much,” Pereira said. “My only social media is Instagram. I don’t have a Twitter account, but if he’s saying anything it doesn’t make a difference for me. I’m focused. I don’t care about provocation. I know how to deal with it, so it doesn’t matter what he says.”

The crossroads of skill and persona meet at a head for Strickland when he barks and trash talks opponents during a fight. Pereira expects UFC 276 to be no different but plans to use it as affirmation Strickland is frustrated.

“It won’t. I can even talk back, like with my last opponent, there was a time I clapped back at his corners for some of the things they were saying,” Pereira said. “Some people said it got in my way, but I’ve done that a few times before. Some times I use it as a strategy too. So it’s not something that affects me. It’s all planned. Sometimes I play around with my training partners, I try some tricky things here and there and say, ‘Look what I’m doing, look what I’m gonna do at the fight.’ It’s all planned. I won’t lose focus for it. Perhaps I see it as him doing it because he’s frustrated. I’ll realize what his real intentions through his actions. It could be a good telling for me.”

Pereira predicts a victory Saturday one way or another. Despite his reputation as a knockout artist, Pereira sees a decision as a potentially likely outcome. Whatever the method, Pereira thinks his seventh pro MMA fight will be a big experience-builder.

“I believe I’ll have a great win,” Pereira said. “Like I always say, I want to get experience in the fights, fighting three rounds of five minutes is different for me, so I need to rack up some experience. If a KO comes it’ll be from the opportunity that was present to me. But I’m going in there to get a clear win and get as much experience from this fight as possible. I want people to be watching to have no doubt that I was the winner of the fight. If I win by points, I want to be as clear as possible. But if I get to finish him it’ll be great.”

UFC 276 takes place Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card streams on ESPN+ pay-per-view after prelims on ABC/ESPN+.

Israel Adesanya’s coach believes Sean Strickland a worthy title contender, but Alex Pereira has ‘to do more work’

If Sean Strickland beats Alex Pereira at UFC 276, “there’s a clear-cut fight that we can have eight weeks later hopefully.”

City Kickboxing head coach Eugene Bareman doesn’t know if [autotag]Alex Pereira[/autotag] beating [autotag]Sean Strickland[/autotag] would be enough for a title shot.

Pereira (5-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) will get a big leap up in competition when he faces Strickland (25-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) on July 2 at UFC 276 on the same night that middleweight champion [autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag] defends his title against Jared Cannonier.

With Pereira holding two kickboxing wins over Adesanya (22-1 MMA, 11-1 UFC), beating the streaking Strickland could result in a rubber match in MMA. However, Bareman thinks just three octagon wins for Pereira would make it too soon.

“It would be nice for Strickland to win, because Strickland’s body of work is good enough to fight for a title,” Bareman told Submission Radio. “Whereas if Pereira wins, he’s still got to do more work.”

[lawrence-related id=2550022,2549848,2549931]

Bareman was not coaching Adesanya when he lost to Pereira, so he has no personal attachment to their story. He doesn’t think Adesanya does either and simply sees Strickland as a more logical option because of his resume.

“I wasn’t involved in the fight (when Israel lost to Pereira),” Bareman said. “So I don’t have some deep-seeded need to go and beat up Pereira because we lost to him. We had a match with Pereira and lost fair and square in those matches. That’s the life of a fighter. So, I don’t have a deep-seeded need to go and fight Pereira and get revenge, if that’s what you’re saying. Maybe Israel does. For him, I don’t think he does. I don’t think it concerns him at all.

“I think Pereira’s just another fighter trying to make his way to the champion, who’s beat the champion in a completely different sport. I just don’t think Israel even thinks about it too hard. I definitely don’t. The only reason I say Strickland is (worthy is) because if Strickland wins, that’s got a really clear cut contender. Whereas if Pereira wins, it’s like, well, you’ve beaten one guy, you’ve probably gotta beat some more. So, if Strickland wins, there’s a clear-cut fight that we can have eight weeks later hopefully.”

Sean Strickland vs. Alex Pereira shifts from UFC 277 to UFC 276

A key middleweight out between Sean Strickland and Alex Pereira has a new date.

A key UFC middleweight bout between [autotag]Sean Strickland[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Alex Pereira[/autotag] has a new date.

Originally scheduled to take place July 30 at UFC 277, the promotion has moved the bout one pay-per-view event earlier to UFC 276 on July 2 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup recently informed MMA Junkie of the change but asked to remain anonymous since the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Winner of his past six in a row, Strickland (25-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) is closing in on his first-career title shot. The 31-year-old is coming off back-to-back main event wins over Uriah Hall, and most recently Jack Hermansson at UFC Fight Night 200 in February.

Meanwhile, Pereira (5-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) will get a highly ranked opponent in just his third UFC fight. The former two-division Glory Kickboxing champion scored a knockout victory over Andreas Michailidis at UFC 268 in New York,  followed by a unanimous decision over Bruno Silva at UFC Fight Night 203 in March.

With the addition, the UFC 276 lineup includes:

  • Lauren Murphy vs. Miesha Tate
  • Bryan Barberena vs. Robbie Lawler
  • Dricus Du Plessis vs. Brad Tavares
  • Jessica-Rose Clark vs. Julija Stoliarenko
  • Uriah Hall vs. Andre Muniz

Sean Strickland likes unknown factor about ‘savage’ Alex Pereira, expects title shot with a win

“I do like the fact that he does have that unknown factor. New blood.”

Although he’s fighting an unranked opponent next, [autotag]Sean Strickland[/autotag] expects to emerge as a No. 1 contender with a win.

At UFC 277 on July 30, Strickland (25-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) meets former Glory Kickboxing dual-champion [autotag]Alex Pereira[/autotag] (5-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC), who’s notched two wins since signing with the UFC in the fall of 2021.

Pereira only has a total of six professional MMA fights, but his storyline with UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya has given him a lot of steam. Pereira holds two wins over Adesanya in kickboxing: a unanimous decision in 2016, followed by a left hook knockout in their rematch in 2017.

“The f*cking guy knocked out Izzy. The guy’s a f*cking savage,” Strickland said in an interview with Helen Yee. “I actually kind of enjoy, and I’ll tell you why. (Paulo) Costa, to me, is an easy paycheck. All my last fights, all great men, all solid f*cking dudes. But walking into those fights, you’re kind of just like, ‘I’m better than you, I’m better than you, I’m better than you.’

“With Alex, it’s kind of like this scary thing. It kind of gets me excited. You see him, you’re like, ‘Oh man, you’re a big, scary-looking kickboxer, I want to fight you.’ So I do like the fact that he does have that unknown factor – new blood.”

Another pivotal middleweight matchup between Robert Whittaker and Marvin Vettori will take place at UFC 275 in June just a month before Strickland locks horns with Pereira, but Strickland is confident his fight will determine who gets the winner of the projected matchup between Adesanya and Jared Cannonier.

“Whittaker and Marvin – and again, I love Marvin; he’s a savage – but Whittaker and Marvin, they had their shot. The winner of me and Alex should get the title (shot), absolutely. I think everybody wants that.”

Glover Teixeira: Alex Pereira’s fight with Sean Strickland will show he’s ‘ready to fight Adesanya right now’

Glover Teixeira thinks Alex Pereira will show the world how good he is against Sean Strickland at UFC 277.

[autotag]Glover Teixeira[/autotag] thinks his training partner [autotag]Alex Pereira[/autotag] is already capable of fighting for UFC middleweight gold, and he expects that to be proven to the rest of the world at UFC 277.

Pereira (5-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC), a former kickboxing champion who owns multiple wins over reigning UFC champ Israel Adesanya, will get a fight that will put him on the fast track to the belt when he takes on Sean Strickland (25-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) on July 30. It’s just the third octagon appearance for the Brazilian, but one that if he wins, could put him on a championship trajectory.

Although there’s a lot of questions still to be answered about Pereira’s skillset given he only has a handful of MMA fights, Teixeira (33-7 MMA, 16-5 UFC), the current UFC light heavyweight champion, has a much deeper knowledge. In his opinion, Pereira has the overall ability to give Adesanya or any top name at 185 pounds a run for his money.

“He’s ready,” Teixeira said in an interview with Ryan Quinn for The Cornerman MMA. “He’s definitely working his ground, he’s improving every time. He has very good standup, very good at the distance and just a very mature fighter. I think he’s ready to fight Adesanya right now. The next fight with Sean, I think it’s going to be a great fight for Alex, and what he wants is to get there. To get there and fight.”

[lawrence-related id=2534188]

After scoring a devastating knockout of Andreas Michailidis in his promotional debut at UFC 268 in November, Pereira’s sophomore octagon showing saw him go the distance. He outworked Bruno Silva en route to a unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night 203 earlier this month, setting him up for the fight with Strickland.

Teixeira said he knows Strickland is a game opponent, but he thinks Pereira has what it takes to get his hand raised in this matchup.

“I think Bruno for sure is tougher than Sean Strickland, in my opinion,” Teixeira said. “Just the striking, he hits very hard. I think Bruno for sure is tougher than Sean Strickland.”
