Alex Palczewski has been a big winner at Broncos training camp

“[He’s] tough and smart,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said of Alex Palczewski.

One of the big winners of Denver Broncos training camp and preseason has been undrafted offensive tackle Alex Palczewski. The Illinois product has looked so good this summer that he’s earned rotational snaps with the starting offensive line at practice.

“[He’s] tough and smart,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said of Palczewski on Tuesday. “He’s played a lot of football. It’s not always pretty, but there is this quality of ‘he gets the job done.’

“I said this at the beginning of camp — after the draft, I thought we did a good job in that two-hour period of signing free agents. Sometimes offensive linemen are hard to get. We were able to sign a pretty good class of undrafted offensive linemen that has helped us and will help us, not only this year, but in the future. I’m encouraged.”

The Broncos will have to make some tough decisions for the final spots on the offensive line. Quinn Bailey has been with the team since 2019 and he is a versatile lineman who can play both guard and tackle. Luke Wattenberg was a fifth-round pick last year and can play guard and center.

Cam Fleming seems to be a lock to make the team as the top backup swing tackle and center Alex Forsyth was picked in the seventh round of this year’s draft. If the Broncos carry four backup offensive linemen behind the five starters, those players might all be above Palczewski.

So there’s no guarantee that Palczewski will end up on the 53-man roster, but he has certainly positioned himself to have a case. If nothing else, Denver will likely make Palczewski a top candidate for the practice squad.

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at rookie offensive lineman Alex Palczewski, No. 63.

Before the Broncos: Palczewski (6-6, 314 pounds) played college football at Illinois, earning honorable mention All-Big Ten honors in 2018, 2019 and 2021 before receiving second-team All-Big Ten recognition as a sixth-year senior in 2022. He started 13 games at right tackle as a team captain in 2022. Before that, he started 12 games in 2021 — seven at tackle and five at guard. Overall, Palczewski started 49 games as a tackle and 16 games as a guard during his time with the Fighting Illini.

Broncos tenure: Palczewski signed with the Broncos as an undrafted free agent in May after not allowing a single sack in his final college season. He will make his Denver debut during preseason in August.

Chance to make the 53-man roster: Palczewski will face long odds to make the active roster. As a versatile offensive lineman who can provide cover both at tackle and guard, Palczewski will likely be a strong candidate for the practice squad in 2023.

Broncos announce undrafted free agent signings: Meet the 15 players

Learn more about the 15 undrafted free agents the Broncos signed following the 2023 NFL draft.

After selecting five players in the 2023 NFL draft (and adding a sixth player through a draft-day trade), the Denver Broncos have filled their 90-man offseason roster by signing undrafted free agents.

The Broncos signed 15 UDFAs after the draft, including two running backs and two defensive linemen. Those are two notable positions given that Denver did not select a running back or a defensive lineman during the draft.

The Broncos also brought in tight ends, wide receivers, offensive linemen, linebackers and defensive backs. Undrafted players often face long odds to make the 53-man roster, but Denver has a strong history of uncovering UDFA gems.

Here’s a look at the 15 UDFA signings the Broncos made in 2023.
