Alex Mirabal likely among Oregon coaches to join Mario Cristobal in Miami

According to @flasportsbuzz, Alex Mirabal is expected to follow Mario Cristobal to Miami.

When a head coach leaves, he usually takes a few of the assistant coaches that worked under him at his last stop. That is no exception with Mario Cristobal, who informed the Oregon Ducks that he would be taking the Miami Hurricanes head coaching job on Monday.

If you were to take a guess at which assistant coach would be the most likely to follow him to South Beach, offensive line coach Alex Mirabal would certainly be the top candidate. Now according to The Miami Herald‘s Barry Jackson, that likely is coming true, with reports that Mirabal is expected to join Cristobal’s staff at The U.

Mirabal and Cristobal have worked together for a long time, and Mirabal is up for the Broyles Award, given out to the top assistant coach each season. It’s no surprise to see him go to Miami where they need to rebuild their offensive line and put it in front of an offense that has some talented pieces, including QB Tyler Van Dyke.

Mirabal said on Monday that he will likely stick around to coach in Oregon’s bowl game, and then make a decision on his future after that. We will see if that still holds true, but it seems we know more about his future now.

Scotty on Star Trek was called a miracle worker because he was always able to fix the Enterprise just in time.

Oregon football has its own Scotty in offensive line coach Alex Mirabal. Injuries have plagued the Ducks offensive line throughout this season, but that group has been able to plug right along thanks to Mirabal’s ability to mix and match players along that line.

Mirabal’s efforts are being recognized as he was nominated for the Broyles Award, an honor given to college football’s top assistant. He’s one of 59 assistants from around the country to be honored as the possible winner of the award.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian won the award last season as Alabama’s offensive coordinator. This year’s winner will be announced Dec. 6.

WATCH: Oregon OL coach Alex Mirabal goes nuts on sideline

It was a comical sight as Oregon Ducks OL coach Alex Mirabal was seen screaming at officials at halftime on Saturday against UCLA.

While today’s game has gone considerably better than the past two for the Oregon Ducks, penalties remain an issue for Mario Cristobal’s squad.

Penalties also remain an issue for Pac-12 officiating crews, and there were more than a few questionable calls late in the first half on Saturday against UCLA.

Cristobal expressed his anger, as one would expect, but this time the viral video of an Oregon coach on the sideline wasn’t the head coach.

Associate head coach Alex Mirabal, who has been coaching the offensive line since Mario Cristobal joined the staff in 2018, was seen screaming at officials as they jogged off the field at halftime.

Mirabal’s extreme anger, mixed with his small 5’5 frame, made for a pretty amusing sight as security staff held him back from making contact with the officials.

Oregon had a frustrating first half which caused some of the tension seen by the staff, but a strong third quarter has the team leading with less than 10 minutes to go.
