Former first-round pick, Alabama OT Alex Leatherwood waived by Los Angeles Chargers

On Tuesday, the Los Angeles Chargers waived former Alabama offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood.

A tumultuous NFL career continues to trend in the wrong direction for former Alabama offensive tackle and first-round draft pick Alex Leatherwood. On Tuesday, Leatherwood was waived by the Los Angeles Chargers.

Since entering the league in 2021, Leatherwood has played for four different teams. He was drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft. The Florida native spent one season with the Raiders before being waived. During his rookie season, he started in all 17 games.

Soon after being waived, Leatherwood was signed by the Chicago Bears. He would spend one season with the Bears before being released. He played in four games with the Bears. Three days later, Leatherwood was signed to the Cleveland Browns practice squad. He spent last season with the Browns. He did not play in a single game.

During this offseason, Leatherwood signed with the Chargers. However, as it seems, he will no longer be a part of the organization. Leatherwood has struggled in each of the last three seasons to earn a spot on the active roster. If he doesn’t ressurect his career in the near future, his dreams of being in the NFL could be over.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the latest regarding former Alabama players in the NFL.

Happy Former Raiders First Rounders Getting Cut Day for all those who celebrate. Today it’s Alex Leatherwood and Johnathan Abram who are getting their walking papers by the team they were hoping to latch on with.

Leatherwood was the Raiders top pick in the 2021 draft. He lasted just one season for the Raiders before being cut. He played four games with the Bears in 2022 and hasn’t seen an NFL snap since. He signed onto the Browns’ practice squad last season and wasn’t brought back. Then signed with the Chargers this past offseason. Now he’s looking for work again.

Abram was taken at 27 overall in the 2019 draft. He was in his fourth season with the Raiders and was released midway through the season. He was claimed by the Packers and cut after two games then signed by the Seahawks where he finished the season. He appeared in nine games with the Saints last season.

The other five first round picks for the Raiders the past five years:

2023 DE Tyree Wilson — Backup for Raiders

We are just 70 days away from Alabama football!

In 70 days, Kalen DeBoer will usher in a new era of Alabama Crimson Tide football, replacing the legendary [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] as head coach in Tuscaloosa.

Coach DeBoer and the Crimson Tide will take on the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers on Aug. 31 to kick off the 2024 college football season inside Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Here at Roll Tide Wire, we will count down the days until Alabama football takes the field.

With just 70 days remaining, we will look at a former Alabama star offensive lineman who wore No. 70, Alex Leatherwood.

Leatherwood helped anchor the Crimson Tide offensive front from 2017-20 before becoming a first-round pick by the Las Vegas Raiders in the 2021 NFL draft.

Leatherwood has not lived up to his potential in the NFL and has bounced around to several different teams.

Freshman offensive lineman William Sanders currently wears No. 70 for the Crimson Tide.

Former Browns offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood signs with Chargers

The former first rounder heads to the Chargers

The Cleveland Browns took a flyer on former first-round pick Alex Leatherwood last year, stashing him on the practice squad. It was a shocker when Leatherwood was drafted in the first round, but the fact that he did mean there might be something in there if he could be developed.

However, despite being coached by one of the best in the business last year, Bill Callahan, Leatherwood never found himself on the active roster come game day. This was despite all of the injuries the Browns had on the offensive line, especially at tackle.

Now Leatherwood is headed to the Los Angeles Chargers after signing with them on Wednesday. The Browns have added talent behind their starters on the offensive line, and the Chargers look to turn around a player’s career that still has upside.

The Browns continue with OTAs this week as Deshaun Watson will throw in front of the media on Thursday.

Chargers sign former first-round pick Alex Leatherwood

The Chargers added to the offensive line with the signing of Alex Leatherwood.

The Chargers have signed former 2021 Raiders first-round selection Alex Leatherwood to the roster. In Leatherwood, the Chargers are getting an offensive lineman who has started games at both tackle and guard.

Leatherwood played his most recent regular season snaps in 2022 with the Bears at right tackle and left guard. In 2023, he was a member of the Browns’ practice squad. He was not signed to a futures reserve deal in January.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh once offered Leatherwood at Michigan when he took a visit in 2016. The promise of his prospect nature as a first-rounder and college profile certainly could be at play here. Aside from any potential projection down the road, the Chargers have asserted that they’re building through the trenches. So depth is still needed at any spot. Another body at tackle may mean the team is committed to seeing a potential Trey Pipkins-guard experiment play out if it ends up that way.

In his last full season as a starter, Leatherwood committed 14 penalties, allowed eight sacks, and gave up 65 pressures. The Raiders tried transitioning him to guard before fully moving on in the 2022 season.

The former highly touted Alabama prospect’s career has been tumultuous. Clearly, the Chargers believe he can still contribute in 2024.

It wasn’t so long ago the Raiders made Alex Leatherwood their selection at 17 overall. To be exact, it was three years ago the Alabama offensive tackle was made the top pick in Las Vegas. Which means he would still be on his rookie contract had the Raiders not cut ties with him after just one season.

There hasn’t been a lot of Letherwood sightings since he started all 17 games as a rookie for the Raiders, but today his name popped up as he has signed on with the Los Angeles Chargers, the team announced.

This will be Leatherwood’s fourth team in four seasons in the NFL. After he was waived by the Raiders prior to the start of the 2022 season, he joined the Bears where he appeared in four games with no starts. He didn’t play a game last season, spending the season on the Browns’ practice squad.

Now he will look to get his career on track with the division rival of the team that drafted and cut him after one season.
