Florida basketball coaches meet with Yale transfer target

Florida basketball coaches met with Yale forward EJ Jarvis recently as the staff continues to look at options in the transfer portal.

Florida basketball coaches met with Yale forward [autotag]EJ Jarvis[/autotag] during an in-home visit, according to a Wednesday report from 247Sports.

Jarvis entered the transfer portal a week ago and is shaping up to be one of the targets Todd Golden’s staff is most interested in. Golden and Co. have a big task ahead of them as they attempt to replace most of the frontcourt from a season ago. [autotag]Alex Fudge[/autotag] will still be around, but [autotag]Colin Castleton[/autotag], [autotag]Jason Jitoboh[/autotag] and [autotag]CJ Felder[/autotag] are all leaving the team.

There are plenty of minutes up for grabs at UF right now, and Jarvis has shown that he has the stuff to excel at the Ivy League level. He averaged 11.4 points and 5.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game. At 6-foot-8 inches tall, Jarvis isn’t afraid to let fly from deep. He shot 40.6% on 32 three-point attempts a season ago.

Despite his impressive numbers, Jarvis didn’t play a ton for Yale last season. He played in just over 55% of the team’s minutes, so this isn’t a 36-minute-a-night kind of guy. That might work well with Todd Golden’s system and allow some flexibility with other potential incoming transfers.

The Gators have also been linked to St. Francis forward [autotag]Josh Cohen[/autotag] and Bradley forward [autotag]Rienk Mast[/autotag].

Jarvis was just a three-star recruit coming out of high school and ranked No. 497 overall in the class of 2019. He now has offers to play in the SEC and other Power Five programs.

Gators expected to lose Trey Bonham to NCAA transfer portal

Florida continues to lose players to the transfer portal after Year 1 of the Todd Golden era. Guard Trey Bonham is expected to be the latest Gators to leave the team this offseason.

Florida has already lost a good chunk of its 2022-23 men’s basketball to the NCAA transfer portal, and junior guard [autotag]Trey Bonham[/autotag] is the latest name expected to step away from the program, according to a report from All Gators.

Bonham appeared in 30 games for the Gators during his one year in Gainesville, starting 13 of those contests and reaching 20 points three times. The Virginia Military Institute transfer averaged 5.6 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.

Although he did make a string of starts early in the season, Bonham’s production dropped significantly after the calendar turned over. Offensively, he was an energetic leader off the bench, but Bonham’s defense left a lot to be desired.

[autotag]Myreon Jones[/autotag] was the better option at the other guard spot to complement [autotag]Kyle Lofton[/autotag], and there’s no guarantee Bonham takes over either’s role during his senior year. It’s not too surprising to see Bonham leave. Plenty of players gave Todd Golden a chance but there are always going to be those who don’t end up fitting.

Bonham is unique in that he’s the only Golden-era transfer to depart the team after just one year. [autotag]CJ Felder[/autotag], [autotag]Jason Jitoboh[/autotag], [autotag]Niels Lane[/autotag] and [autotag]Kowacie Reeves Jr[/autotag]. were all added to the team during the Mike White days.

The other 2022 transfers are either still with the team or out of college eligibility. [autotag]Alex Fudge[/autotag] and [autotag]Will Richard[/autotag] should be foundational pieces of the lineup next season for the Gators, and Lofton is done with college hoops after five years.

Alabama dominates Florida in near 30-point blowout

Well, that was ugly… Florida got 29 and 10 from Colin Castleton and still lost by nearly 30 points to Alabama.

The Alabama Crimson Tide entered Wednesday night’s matchup with Florida a perfect 10-0 against conference opponents, and the Gators didn’t come close to slowing down the Tide’s undefeated run in an ugly 28-point rout.

Florida’s strength is typically on defense, but that wasn’t the case against Alabama. Freshman Brandon Miller scored every way possible and shut down each of Florida’s comeback bids. [autotag]Colin Castleton[/autotag] posted yet another 20-plus-point double-double and the Gators still lost by nearly 30 points.

Starting point guard [autotag]Kyle Lofton[/autotag], guard [autotag]Myreon Jones[/autotag] and forward [autotag]Alex Fudge[/autotag] combined to go 0-of-15 from the field, and Alabama’s bench more than doubled Florida’s bench’s production. It was domination from start to finish from the Tide. Florida led for precisely 0:00 of this game.

Gators hoops preparing to faceoff with a familiar face in Keyontae Johnson

Keyontae Johnson has been balling with the Kansas State Wildcats this season, but now he’s going up against his former team. Will Florida slow the former Gator down?

Florida basketball is preparing for what might be the most interesting game of its 2022-23 season. On Saturday, UF will travel to Manhattan, Kansas, to face the No. 5 Kansas State Wildcats and former Gator [autotag]Keyontae Johnson[/autotag].

The former SEC Preseason Player of the Year transferred to K-State from Florida after doctors at the school refused to clear him for play. It may hurt Gators fans to know that he’s leading a top-five team in scoring (18.3 points per game) and rebounding (7.5 rebounds per game), but Johnson’s comeback story was never going to happen at Florida.

The doctors couldn’t clear him after he literally collapsed in the middle of a game against Florida State, and the send-off on Senior Day last year was about as good as you can ask for given the circumstances. Now, he’s the centerpiece for a team on a surprise run and looks like a potential first-round pick once again.

Todd Golden can’t worry about what could have been, though. He needs to devise a plan to stop the man half his players called Coach Key a year ago. The first step is getting [autotag]Alex Fudge[/autotag] back. Fudge went down in the second half against Mississippi State last weekend with a reported concussion and didn’t play in the South Carolina game.

Florida managed a convincing win against the Gamecocks, but they will need Fudge back in the fold to beat the Wildcats. Golden said he was hopeful that Fudge would be available for Saturday but no updates have come in on him since.

[autotag]Colin Castleton[/autotag] will be another major factor in limiting Johnson in the paint. He’s leading the SEC with 3.15 blocks per game and isn’t afraid to challenge players at the rim. The two know each other well, so expect the winner of that battle to be key in determining which team comes out on top.

Stopping Johnson would put the burden of scoring on guard Markquis Nowell, who mostly shoots from three-point range. Florida will have to make sure to keep him guarded, but it’s better than being dominated by a player that should have been a star for the Gators.

It won’t be easy to stop the fairytale senior year that Keyontae Johnson is having, but Florida is going to try its best on Saturday.

Golden praises backcourt tandem for unselfish play in convincing win over South Carolina

Myreon Jones has been outstanding for Florida recently, and Todd Golden made sure to give him and Kyle Lofton credit after Wednesday’s win over South Carolina.

Most coaches would be ready to praise their squad endlessly in the moments immediately after a 21-point win, but [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag] managed to open his post-game press conference with some criticism of the Florida Gators after an 81-60 throttling of South Carolina.

“I thought we did a nice job,” Golden led before jumping into what the team could have done better. “We still didn’t shoot it great, so if we can look at one thing to improve upon (it’s) that and getting on the glass — we didn’t do a good enough job defensively on the glass.

“But, a lot of great things, and what I’m most proud about is just the way we’ve continued to be unselfish and share the ball. You know, we had 21 assists and six turnovers tonight. It’s really hard to do at this level, especially when you only make seven threes.”

In one of Florida’s best wins of the year (and the fifth over the last six conference matchups), the Gators looked elite on the court, leading by as much as 30 points at one point. Unlike the Mississippi State game, there was no second-half collapse and Florida finished off a convincing victory.

[autotag]Colin Castleton[/autotag] led the team with 18 points and [autotag]Kowacie Reeves[/autotag] trailed him with 15, but the real story was [autotag]Myreon Jones[/autotag]’ triple-double bid that saw him fall just short of double digits in each category (nine points, seven rebounds and eight assists).

Jones has seen more minutes lately after proving to be an effective second ball-handler for the Gators with point guard [autotag]Kyle Lofton[/autotag] on the court. The duo has spent a good chunk of time together in the same lineup and the results speak for themselves.

“Him (Jones) and Kyle (Lofton) have just played really well off each other and complimented each other really well,” Golden said. “I think over the past two games they are 22 assists and zero turnovers or something like that. It’s insane. But, when you have senior leadership out there, guys that have been through it a little bit, they are Batman and Robin in the backcourt a little bit running our team.

“They can both play the ball screens, both shoot the ball and they’re heady, IQ players that have made us really, really good over the past couple of weeks. But, really happy for Myreon because obviously he struggled at the beginning of the year. He couldn’t really get comfortable, but I felt like in that Auburn game, even though we lost, he kind of broke out and felt like he got back to himself and has played really, really well all through league play.”

Golden wouldn’t go as far as to say that Jones had to remake himself but instead pointed to the process of trying out different rotations and lineups as what was holding him back. Getting him on the court with Lofton seemed to make everything click. Golden also pointed out that Jones is more relaxed on the court, knowing that he has a defined role on the team.

Seeing it all come together on Wednesday was the cherry on top for a Gators team that is working hard to live up to its full potential. Let’s not forget that Florida is down two of its “bigger” players right now, forwards [autotag]Alex Fudge[/autotag] (concussion) and [autotag]CJ Felder[/autotag] (away from team).

“It’s a great feeling for our guys to have kind of gotten through some tough times early and now see winning five out of six, and see multiple guys –– nearly almost had six guys in double figures tonight. It’s just a really complete effort from the team, and I thought our guys on the bench did a good job picking up for Alex being out tonight.”

Still, Golden isn’t calling this the perfect win. A lack of aggressiveness in the second half led to a worse performance on the boards, and that’s the kind of thing he’ll have the team focus on as a matchup with No. 5 Kansas State draws near.

Golden is slowly figuring out what works for this team, but February will be a big prove-it month for Florida.

Florida likely to be without F Alex Fudge against South Carolina

Alex Fudge might not be available for Florida’s matchup with South Carolina, but head coach Todd Golden has a plan.

Florida forward [autotag]Alex Fudge[/autotag] is doubtful to play in Wednesday’s game against the South Carolina Gamecocks after suffering a head injury on Saturday.

Fudge went down early in the second half after unsuccessfully attempting to draw a charge. He never returned to the floor after subbing out, and 247Sports’ Jacob Rudner is reporting that the diagnosis is a concussion. When talking to the press Tuesday, [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag] indicated that Fudge could be back as early as Saturday, though, when Florida plays No. 5 Kansas State.

“Alex has been really good for us,” Golden said on Tuesday. “I don’t think we’ll see him tomorrow night (South Carolina). Hopefully, we’ll get him back for Saturday.”

Losing Fudge hurts Florida in the size department, especially following [autotag]CJ Felder[/autotag]’s indefinite separation from the team. [autotag]Colin Castleton[/autotag] and [autotag]Jason Jitoboh[/autotag] are the only players on the active roster that are taller than 6-foot-6 inches. Freshman Aleks Szymczyk is 6-foot-10-inches tall but has only seen 11 minutes of action all season.

Golden says the plan is to play more spread out on the perimeter while Fudge is gone, but he’s not hiding the fact that Florida’s game needs to be altered because of the injury. It’s possible we see Castleton shift over to the four while [autotag]Jason Jitoboh[/autotag] takes over at center, too.

Florida hoops loses forward CJ Felder indefinitely

CJ Felder is taking some time away from the Florida basketball team, according to head coach Todd Golden.

Florida men’s basketball head coach [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag] said that forward [autotag]CJ Felder[/autotag] would be away from the team for an indefinite period of time on Friday during his media availability.

Although the reason for Felder’s leave of absence is unknown, Golden made sure to clarify that Florida wasn’t punishing him in any way. In fact, reports from 247Sports’ Graham Hall and Jacob Rudner suggest that Florida didn’t want Felder to leave the team and that the decision was personal.

Golden remarked that the door was left open for Felder’s return if he wanted to, but the expectation is that he will be out for the remainder of the season. He’s not expected to be on the bench for Saturday’s contest against No. 20 Missouri.

Felder began the 2022-23 campaign as Florida’s starting power forward but slowly lost the job to [autotag]Alex Fudge[/autotag]. After averaging just under 17 minutes a game as a starter, Felder’s playtime was cut in half to 8:45 a game off the bench. Most recently, he played just two minutes for the Gators against Georgia.

He spent the first two years of his college career at Boston College before transferring to UF. He served as a rotational big man for the Gators in 2021-22 under Mike White with [autotag]Anthony Duruji[/autotag] ahead of him. Felder was supposed to be a major player for Golden in Year 1 but that hasn’t come together.

With Felder gone, the Gators will move forward with Fudge as the starter and look to utilize a small-ball lineup when necessary. It’s been tricky for Golden to get [autotag]Kowacie Reeves[/autotag] and [autotag]Will Richard[/autotag] playing time, so he may look to utilize some of their length at the four spot with Felder away.

Top-100 SG picks up Florida offer after midweek visit

The Gators offered this in-state shooting guard after a midweek visit to see the team in action against the SEC.

Florida’s basketball program offered Orlando Christian Prep shooting guard [autotag]Isaiah Brown[/autotag] on Wednesday night after the four-star recruit visited the Gators for the game against Texas A&M, according to 247Sports.

Brown confirmed the offer on social media Thursday morning, and the report is that Florida is in the unofficial top three after becoming the first major program to offer him. Florida Atlantic and Florida Gulf Coast are the other major programs, signaling an in-state bias. Brown has been waiting on UF to offer since his September visit and says the new coaching staff is like a family.

While Brown has no future visits planned just yet, Florida will likely get him on campus again for an official visit at some point, especially if other SEC programs get involved. Brown mentioned Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt as visits he would like to make, but Florida will always be the first that reached out.

Brown knows plenty of the young pieces on Florida’s current roster, including former Orlando-area stars [autotag]Riley Kugel[/autotag] and [autotag]Denzel Aberdeen[/autotag]. He’s also familiar with LSU transfer [autotag]Alex Fudge[/autotag], who played high school ball in Jacksonville. Perhaps most importantly, Brown is close with five-star Montverde Academy power forward [autotag]Asa Newell[/autotag], who Florida is targeting heavily as well. Getting the elite AAU duo to stay in-state would be huge for Todd Golden and Co.

The recruiting process is nowhere near completion for Brown, but the Gators do sit in an undeniably favorable spot. A decision isn’t supposed to come until the fall, but these things can always get moved up or pushed back in a second.

Brown is ranked No. 97 overall on the 247Sports composite and is the No. 19 shooting guard in the class of 2024. He’s the 12th-best player in the state of Florida, according to the service.

PHOTOS: Highlights from Florida basketball’s loss vs Texas A&M Aggies

Take a look at some highlights from Wednesday night’s action.

Florida basketball failed to capitalize on its late rally against the Texas A&M Aggies in the O’Connell Center on Wednesday night, dropping their second-straight Southeastern Conference matchup after a furious rally against the Auburn Tigers also failed in the SEC opener. After all was said and done, the Gators came away with a 66-63 loss at the hands of the visitors sending them to the .500 mark on the season with a 7-7 mark overall.

[autotag]Trey Bonham[/autotag]’s 21 points and four dimes paced the Orange and Blue while [autotag]Colin Castleton[/autotag]’s 14 was the only other double-digit total for a Gator. Catleston, [autotag]Kowacie reeves[/autotag], [autotag]Will Richard[/autotag] and [autotag]Alex Fudge[/autotag] all notched a team-high five boards — though the latter fouled out with five minutes remaining in the game.

Take a look below at highlights from Florida basketball’s second SEC loss of the season, this time coming at the hands of the visiting Texas A&M Aggies.

Florida forward included in Bleacher Report’s latest mock draft

After transferring from LSU, forward Alex Fudge is beginning to make a name for himself in Florida and is seeing his draft stock rise quickly.

As conference play begins, Florida forward [autotag]Alex Fudge[/autotag] is starting to emerge as a potential candidate for the 2023 NBA draft. Bleacher Report included him in its latest mock draft, predicting that the Los Angeles Clippers will take him with the 50th overall selection.

Of course, there’s plenty of time for Fudge’s draft stock to go up or down. He’s only faced one Quadrant 1 team this year and has only recently joined the starting lineup after starting the season coming off the bench. Fudge’s potential has always been sky high, but it’s his touch from long distance that’s making him a legitimate draft prospect.

“Fudge is starting to make threes on a regular basis,” Jonathan Wasserman wrote for Bleacher Report, “a significant development for a 6’9″ forward with serious quickness and bounce for finishing and defensive playmaking.”

Florida fans have been wowed all year with Fudge’s finishing power at the rim, and providing some touch from three-point range translates well to the modern NBA game. Consistent shooting from distance is something that [autotag]Colin Castleton[/autotag] has looked to add to his game, but Fudge has found far more success than Florida’s big man.

At the beginning of the year, most would agree that Castleton is the Gator with the best chances of making it to the NBA in 2023, but now that title belongs to Fudge, at least for now. The SEC schedule will provide a much better look at how he performs against high-caliber opponents, and he could leave after the season if he’s considered a lock to be drafted in the early second round (or higher).
