Frank Pollack confirms Alex Cappa would have played in Super Bowl

Frank Pollack confirms the Alex Cappa-Super Bowl idea.

Cincinnati Bengals fans already knew right guard Alex Cappa might have been able to return from injury had the team advanced to the Super Bowl.

Bengals offensive line coach Frank Pollack has now confirmed that idea while chatting with reporters at the scouting combine, saying Cappa was “hellbent” on getting out there.

“He was gonna be back if we made it to the final game,” Pollack said, according to CLNS Media’s Mike Petraglia. “He might have been a little limited that week in practice, but he was going to be out there.”

Pollack also heaped praise on Cappa, who he says was playing at a Pro Bowl level before the injury.

As an aside, Pollack also said left tackle Jonah Williams would have also potentially been available for the Super Bowl. Notably, Williams also recently came up in a discussion with another Bengals coach who confirmed they won’t make him move positions next year, his final season under contract.

Alex Cappa would’ve returned in Super Bowl, will be ready for spring

Bengals guard Alex Cappa will be good to go this spring.

Arguably no injury loomed larger for the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC title game loss than the absence of right guard Alex Cappa.

Cappa suffered an ankle injury late in the season and was nearing a return as his team took on the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC title game. He couldn’t go, though, and backup Max Scharping was the biggest weak point on the line as Chris Jones popped off for a big performance.

Unfortunately for the Bengals, Cappa made it clear he would have been good to go had the Bengals made the Super Bowl, per Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com;

“The next day after the last game is always about injuries, too. Right guard Alex Cappa (ankle), who was injured in the last minutes of the regular season, confirmed the plan was to play in the Super Bowl, which would have been sweet for a guy who had to sit out the Super Bowl his Buccaneers won in 2020. Yes, he says. He’ll be ready for the spring.”

While that stings, the silver lining is that the injury wasn’t worse and it apparently won’t have any impact on Cappa’s availability for spring work. Compared to just how bad it looked, that’s a big relief.

The sooner he’s back and on the same page as his linemates, the sooner the unit can avoid some of the early season consistency injuries from last year.

Alex Cappa, Jonah Williams headline first Bengals vs. Chiefs injury report

Small updates on big names for the Bengals before the AFC title game.

The Cincinnati Bengals issued the first injury report ahead of their AFC title game showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs.

On it, the expected names headlined the DNP list:

  • OL Alex Cappa (DNP)
  • OL Jonah Williams (DNP)
  • DT DJ Reader (Rest, DNP)
  • LB Joe Bachie (Limited)
  • CB Tre Flowers (Limited)
  • DE Sam Hubbard (Limited, DNP)

The best news? Center Ted Karras practiced in full after toughing out an apparent knee injury last weekend.

Bengals head coach Zac Taylor was non-commital on either Cappa or Willaims playing on Sunday, per ESPN’s Ben Baby.

For what it’s worth, Cappa was walking through the locker room with the ankle taped, per Baby.

The next two days will be very interesting to watch when it comes to Cappa and Williams, though Jackson Carman and Max Scharping, respectively, filled in well last week. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes practiced despite the reported high-ankle sprain.

Zac Taylor provides injury updates on Cappa, Williams and Hendrickson

Some updates on key injured Bengals.

The Cincinnati Bengals have some key injuries to monitor as the team preps to take on the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC title game.

While the offense got encouraging performances from linemen like Jackson Carman in the divisional round, the team would like to get left tackle Jonah Williams and right guard Alex Cappa back soon.

According to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic, Taylor said this on both Cappa and Williams: “Improving every day. See where it ends up.”

Vague, as expected. But news on Williams had already been encouraging and it was an injury he had played through in the past. Cappa was always speculated as a possible AFC title game or Super Bowl return, should they make those games. Cappa was in a boot while on the sidelines on Sunday in Buffalo.

Taylor also revealed that defensive end Trey Hendrickson is just fine after a visit to the x-ray room during Sunday’s game, per ESPN’s Ben Baby. He continues to play through a broken wrist.

As of now, the same line that started three backs in a very good showing last week will start against the Chiefs and Hendrickson will continue to hover in his current snap-count range while gutting it out through his injury.

Alex Cappa still on scooter, Jonah Williams off crutch as OL rehab continues

Updates on the injured Bengals offensive linemen.

Cincinnati Bengals offensive linemen Alex Cappa and Jonah Williams weren’t on the practice field Wednesday as the team began prep for the divisional round encounter with the Buffalo Bills.

That was a bad sign for both guys as Cappa works back from the ankle injury suffered in the season finale and Williams deals with the dislocated kneecap suffered in the first round of the playoffs.

Wednesday in the locker room, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Kelsey Conway, Cappa was still on the scooter and Williams had at least gotten rid of the one crutch while he walked.

Bengals head coach Zac Taylor had described both Cappa and Williams as week-to-week early this week, effectively ruling them out for the game against the Bills.

All signs point to one or both being able to return eventually if the Bengals keep advancing, but the insight from the locker room explains why they weren’t out there on the practice field. Max Scharping remains at right guard in place of Cappa and Jackson Carman at left tackle for Williams.

ESPN’s Ben Baby caught up with Taylor on the topic Wednesday:

Zac Taylor calls Jonah Williams and Alex Cappa ‘week-to-week’ before divisional round

Updates on injuries from Bengals head coach Zac Taylor.

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor described left tackle Jonah Wiliams as “week-to-week” on the Monday after the win over the Baltimore Ravens.

Taylor added a “we’ll see, hard to tell” if Williams will be able to go against the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round of the playoffs, per the team’s Marisa Contipelli.

Injured right guard Alex Cappa, who continues to rehab an ankle issue, also got the same classification from Taylor.

Williams suffered the injury during the win over the Ravens and didn’t return. A report on Monday called it a dislocated kneecap. It’s worth pointing out that he suffered the same issue back in Week 5 — against the Ravens — and didn’t miss many snaps and no games while wearing a brace. But it sounds like the other leg this time, which complicates things.

Generally speaking, “week-to-week” from the Bengals means out that week and “day-to-day” is a much better designation.

If Williams can’t go, Jackson Carman could get the nod as he did Sunday night, while Max Scharping will keep starting in Cappa’s spot.

While things don’t sound good for the two starters for the Bills game, it’s something to watch closely — and it’s starting to sound like both might be able to return if the team keeps advancing in the playoffs.

Zac Taylor provides injury update on RG Alex Cappa heading into playoffs

An update on Alex Cappa.

The Cincinnati Bengals sound like a team that won’t have starting right guard Alex Cappa for at least one week.

Speaking with reporters on the Monday after the Week 18 win over the Baltimore Ravens, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said it would be tough for Cappa to make it back for Sunday night’s wild-card playoff game against the Ravens, per Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com.

It’s unclear whether Cappa will miss the entire postseason because of the ankle injury suffered in the regular-season finale. While he’s out, veteran Max Scharping will take over next to fellow backup-turned-starter Hakeem Adeniji. Right tackle La’el Collins is out for the season.

Hobson noted this in an article before Taylor met with the media:

Cappa had his ankle rolled in the pocket late in the third quarter and the talk around his locker was he was out for the rest of the playoffs. But when he rolled by on a scooter, he was asked how he was doing and he smiled said, “Great. We just won the division.”

We’ll update once testing happens and the team provides more info. For now, though, the Bengals lose their best lineman and will start two backups on the right side during the playoffs.

Bengals OL Alex Cappa carted to locker room after injury

The Bengals lose another starting OL.

The Cincinnati Bengals lost starting right guard Alex Cappa to injury during Sunday’s season finale against the Baltimore Ravens.

Cappa went down in the third quarter and needed the help of trainers to leave the field. A player rolled up on his left leg in a bad-looking injury mid-play.

From there, Cappa went to the blue medical tent, then needed a cart to leave the field for the locker room.

It’s reminiscent of the sequence of events that happened to right tackle La’el Collins two weeks ago. He’s lost for the season as a result.

With Cappa off the field, Max Scharping will take over as the starting right guard. If he has to miss extended time, it means the Bengals will be down two of the four massive upgrades to the line for the playoffs.

Update: Cincinnati initially called it an ankle injury with a questionable designation:

It doesn’t sound like the Cincinnati Bengals offense will have to wait long on two of its new starters to get back in the fold at training camp.

Monday, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said new right guard Alex Cappa will slowly get worked in over the next few days as padded practices start.

Perhaps most notably, Taylor said new right tackle La’el Collins is considered “day to day,” according to the team’s Marisa Contipelli.

Collins was a surprise addition to the NFI list with a back issue before camp started. While he’s been out, rookie Cordell Volson got some snaps there in drills despite being slated for a competition with Jackson Carman for the starting spot at left guard.

If things pan out well over the next week, both Cappa and Collins could be back in front of a returning Joe Burrow.

Guard Alex Cappa is one-third of the major offensive line overhaul the Cincinnati Bengals made in free agency this offseason.

And it will be a few weeks before Cappa’s able to get in front of Joe Burrow during live work.

As Zac Taylor told reporters on Tuesday, Cappa’s dealing with a minor core injury that will sideline him for a few weeks.

With Cappa out, Hakeem Adeniji lined up at right guard and Jackson Carman was in at left guard alongside the team’s other two new additions, center Ted Karras and right tackle La’el Collins.

Mike Petraglia of CLNS Media captured the video:

As of this writing, this isn’t a major concern for Cappa and the Bengals, as it sounds like he’ll be ready in time for the start of training camp.

Cappa is, by the way, a guy who has played with a broken arm and tried to stay in a game with a broken leg. Or in other words, he’s the sort of glass-eater Frank Pollack’s been looking for in Cincinnati.
