Twitter reacts to Bears hiring Alan Williams as defensive coordinator

The Bears are hiring Alan Williams as their defensive coordinator, and fans had plenty of Chicago Colts jokes.

New Bears head coach Matt Eberflus has wasted no time filling out his coaching staff, landing both his offensive and defensive coordinators within days of each other.

Chicago has hired Alan Williams as their new defensive coordinator. Williams served as the Colts safeties coach under Eberflus in Indianapolis, and he brings a familiarity with Eberflus’ defense to the Bears.

Williams boasts 20-plus years of NFL coaching experience, where he’s served primarily as a defensive backs coach. He’s coached defensive backs in Indianapolis (2002-11), Detroit (2014-17) and with the Colts again (2018-21).

Bears fans seem to like the addition of Williams, who has previous defensive coordinator experience with the Vikings (2012-13). But there were plenty of Chicago Colts jokes along the way as Eberflus continues to bring plenty of his assistants from Indianapolis.

Bears hire Colts’ Alan Williams as new defensive coordiantor

The Bears are hiring Colts safeties coach Alan Williams to be their new defensive coordinator.

Indianapolis Colts safeties coach Alan Williams will be following Matt Eberflus to the Chicago Bears and will be the new defensive coordinator in the Windy City.

It was expected that Williams would be the front runner to land the new gig in Chicago under former the Colts defensive coordinator in Eberflus. With Williams now taking over as the defensive coordinator in Chicago, the Colts are expected to have a completely different coaching staff entering 2022.

This Williams’ second stint as a defensive coordinator. He previously held the role with the Minnesota Vikings for two seasons (2012-2013). Williams would have been the most logical in-house option to take over as the Colts’ new defensive coordinator.

Joining Williams in Chicago will be James Rowe (cornerbacks), Dave Borgonzi (linebackers) and David Overstreet II (assistant defensive backs).

However, it’s clear that Chris Ballard and Frank Reich will be looking to outside candidates to fill that role.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Bears are hiring Alan Williams as their defensive coordinator. Eberflus told reporters earlier this week that he won’t be calling plays, which means Williams will have play-calling duties on defense.

The Bears already hired Getsy as offensive coordinator last week, where he will be entrusted with developing Justin Fields and getting the offense on track.

Eberflus is also expected to bring over several more coaches from Indianapolis, including linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi, cornerbacks coach James Rowe and assistant defensive backs coach David Overstreet.

Chicago has also interviewed Thomas McGaughey for their special teams coordinator position. Eberflus is also reportedly zeroing in on Raiders interim head coach Rich Bisaccia for special teams coordinator.

Former Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus is expected to bring several of his assistants with him as he takes over as the new head coach of the Chicago Bears.

While some aren’t as much of a surprise, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported that Eberflus is working on bringing at least four assistant coaches with him to Chicago.

According to Breer, those four names reportedly are safeties coach Alan Williams, linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi, cornerbacks coach James Rowe and assistant defensive backs coach David Overstreet II.

The Colts have been busy with their own search for Eberflus’ replacement, which has included up to six names as of this writing.

It was expected that Eberflus would bring with him some assistants but it appears the Colts are heading towards a complete overhaul of the defensive coaching staff.

Report: Bears to interview Colts’ Alan Williams for DC vacancy

The Bears will interview Colts’ safeties coach Alan Williams for their DC vacancy.

Former Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus is now the head coach of the Chicago Bears and he has his sights set on several of his assistants to follow him.

It has been reported that Colts linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi and cornerbacks coach James Rowe will follow Eberflus to Chicago. Now, there’s a report that safeties coach Alan Williams will interview for the vacated defensive coordinator role under Eberflus, per Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.

Williams is still in the mix to take over as the defensive coordinator for the Colts as they search for a replacement. They need to fill the vacancy that Eberflus left and Williams is the most logical choice when it comes to in-house candidates.

Williams has been with the Colts since joining the staff in 2018 so he would likely bring a similar scheme if he’s the defensive coordinator. He’s held that role before in his career with the Minnesota Vikings (2012-2013).

It’s also clear the Colts are bringing in outside candidates for the role. They are expected to interview Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator Joe Cullen on Saturday and Washington defensive backs coach Chris Harris at some point over the weekend.

7 options for Colts to replace former DC Matt Eberflus

Here are seven options the Colts have to replace DC Matt Eberflus.

The Indianapolis Colts now have to look for a new defensive coordinator as Matt Eberflus has been hired to be the next head coach of the Chicago Bears.

Two offseasons in a row now the Colts have lost a coordinator. First, they lost Nick Sirianni to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021. Now, they will watch Eberflus take over the job at Halas Hall.

When Sirianni left, the Colts promoted from within. They opted to go with Marcus Brady, who just completed his first season as the offensive coordinator under Frank Reich.

They will have similar options to work from on the defensive side of the ball. Some have experience as a defensive coordinator in the NFL while others just recently joined the staff.

The Colts will also have their options outside of West 56th Street if they wanted a more experienced defensive coordinator. That would likely mean a shake-up with the entire defensive coaching staff and it isn’t clear if that’s a direction the Colts want to go.

Here is a look at seven options the Colts could replace Eberflus with:
