Alan Wake 2 is playable ‘from start to finish,’ says Remedy

The highly-anticipated sequel is further along than most expected.

It’s been quite a while since there was any update on Alan Wake 2, though developer Remedy has confirmed the game is already playable “from start to finish.”

In Remedy’s 2022 financial statements release, the studio gave a brief update on Alan Wake 2 (thanks, VG247).

Alan Wake 2 is in full production. The game will soon have all content in place, and it is playable from start to finish,” reads the statement. “We will then move on to polishing the experience.”

We caught a brief glimpse of Alan Wake 2 way back at the 2021 Game Awards. That reveal trailer is, sadly (for horror hounds like me), the last time we’ve seen anything from the game.

Interestingly enough, Remedy expects that the sequel will renew interest in Alan Wake Remastered – which came out in 2021.

Alan Wake Remastered has not yet generated royalties,” the statement continues. “However, we expect the sales to increase as the release of Alan Wake 2 becomes imminent and fans and new players want to experience the original story on new generation consoles.”

In addition to Alan Wake 2, Remedy is also working on Control 2 and the Max Payne 1 and 2 remakes.

Alan Wake 2 will not be shown off this summer

There’ll be no trailer or demo within the next few months.

Anyone waiting for more details on Alan Wake 2 should get comfortable since Remedy isn’t showing it off this summer. No trailer, gameplay demo, or anything else!

On Thursday, Remedy released a franchise anniversary update regarding all sorts of interesting projects. Stuff like Alan Wake Remastered on Nintendo Switch and the announcement that AMC is developing a TV adaptation. Naturally, everyone wants more details on Alan Wake 2, and creative director Sam Lake gave one.

“Everything [with Alan Wake 2] is going really well, and a great deal of the game is playable,” Lake said. “But we’ve been talking for the past couple of months and have come to a decision that we will not be showing anything big this summer.”

Well, it’s not the news everyone wanted, but you’ve got to give Remedy points for transparency. At least there’s some sick concept art, which you can fawn over below.

“We want to make sure what we are creating is the best possible experience, the best first survival horror game from Remedy,” Lake continues. “We don’t want to pivot the team away from that focus to work on a demo right now. Unfortunately, you will have to wait for a proper demo and trailer a bit longer.”

Fair enough, Sam.

Alan Wake 2 will be Remedy’s first survival horror game

It’s an ocean.

Perhaps no world premiere at the 2021 Game Awards made a splash quite like Alan Wake 2.

Not only because Remedy is such a beloved studio, but due to the fact that the original Alan Wake  came out a decade ago. For years, a follow-up struggled to come into fruition for a whole slew of reasons. Now, through a publishing partnership with Epic GamesAlan Wake 2  is finally happening.

Not much is known about Alan Wake 2  yet in terms of how it’ll play or what platforms it’ll be on. However, Remedy creative director Sam Lake is promising a spooky-good time.

“[It’s been] 10 years of wanting to make [Alan Wake 2], dreaming of making it, we’ve been iterating on the concept, and we know fans have been asking for it,” Lake said during the Game Awards broadcast. “We’re breaking new ground here. This is going to be Remedy’s first-ever survival horror game — our take on the genre. The first game had horror elements to it, but it was an action game.”

You can check out the official Alan Wake 2  announcement below. Alternatively, a higher-quality YouTube mirror is available here.

Lake insists that Alan Wake 2  will be psychological horror with that distinct Remedy flavor. Good timing, as another survival horror title Slitterhead  was announced just a few hours before.
