Big Ten, Notre Dame & the College Football Playoff

How the Big Ten’s unique circumstance logically helps Notre Dame’s CFP argument in years to come.

The Big Ten is set to start their college football season in late October with games beginning the weekend of the 24th.  If Notre Dame plays like they’re capable of there is a great chance the Irish will be 6-0 before a Big Ten team even kicks off a game.

What a strange year.

The conference will also be playing an eight game schedule that is set to be released later this week and each team will play the team who finished the same spot in the standings as them in the other division during the conference title game (Ex:  second place Minnesota in the West would play second place Penn State in the East, third place Iowa would play third place Michigan State, and so forth).

Before things were called off and eventually put back on by the Big Ten, Ohio State was set to enter the year seemingly as talented as any team in the nation.  The Buckeyes will still be loaded, but will they be able to compete for a national championship?

May the best team win it all and if it’s Ohio State or someone else from the Big Ten then more power to them.

On thing to keep in mind with this each year going forward is something longtime NFL scout Greg Gabriel brought up today:

It ends up that it won’t be just seven or eight games, but instead nine. However, it’ll still be two fewer games played than the 11 the SEC Champions will have played and will be fewer than the 12 the ACC Champion will have played and 11 the Big 12 champs will have participated in.

I say that to say this:

When things get back to normal and we don’t have to scurry to see teams and conferences throw together a season due to a pandemic, don’t bring up the lack of a conference championship game in your case against Notre Dame not deserving a potential College Football Playoff spot ever again.

One less game didn’t matter before, it shouldn’t matter in the case of Ohio State or any other potential unbeaten Big Ten champion this year and it shouldn’t matter going forward, either.

When an extra game is actually just a way to distract from the likes of New Mexico State, Georgia Southern and Northwestern State being one of the 13, then it’s not a point that carries any actual weight.

If Ohio State, Penn State or Wisconsin go unbeaten this year they should be in the College Football Playoff, even if they play a game or two fewer than the ACC or SEC Champion or runners up.

Just like if Notre Dame goes unbeaten with their annual schedule, they should be in the College Football Playoff annually even if they play one less game than some.

Now can we keep that same logic now going forward?

Emily Mahar outlasts Caroline Curtis for Golfweek Caledonia Amateur title

Virginia Tech’s Emily Mahar made the most of an opportunity by winning the Golfweek Caledonia Amateur in an uncertain fall season.

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – A playoff is not the time to test yardages. This thought occurred to Emily Mahar as she lobbed 7-iron after 7-iron over the marsh fronting No. 18 green at Caledonia Golf and Fish Club. With a tailwind figuring in, Mahar kept hitting the back of the green.

“I should have hit one less, because I was long every single time, but I knew that if I was long of the pin, at least I wasn’t short in the water,” she said.

When the wind picked up at Caledonia on Tuesday, the closing hole over water factored in in a big way. Ultimately, Alabama sophomore Caroline Curtis and Mahar made three additional trips down that hole before Mahar came out on top with one final par. Curtis, who had a final-round 68, left the door open when she missed the green short and right to finish at 8 under total, a number Mahar had reached with her final-round 67.

“I played a lot of good holes, I just happened to have one bad one at the wrong time,” said Curtis.

Curtis had the opportunity to win outright when she faced a 20-footer for birdie on the final hole. When she barely missed, sudden death kicked in. Curtis, too, was also questioning club choice. She found herself hitting a three-quarter 9-iron over and over again but didn’t want to move down to pitching wedge.

All day in the final round, players were aware of the challenge the 18th would present.

“Gotta be under par heading into 18,” said Erica Shepherd, the Duke sophomore who finished third at 7 under.

Her teammate Megan Furtney, who finished T-7, had a similar thought.

“Just hit and prayed,” joked Furtney. Both players made par there Tuesday for the first time all week.

As for Mahar and Curtis, the two head home to decidedly different fall college golf seasons. Curtis and her four Alabama teammates who entered the Golfweek Caledonia Amateur were headed back to Tuscaloosa – a 10-hour drive – to ready for team qualifying. The first of six rounds will begin next weekend. The SEC will play a three-event fall season.

In the ACC, where Mahar competes with the Hokies, there won’t be team golf. The lack of playing opportunities, and ongoing uncertainty amid a pandemic, has taught Mahar to cherish the tournaments she can compete in. Until the night before the final round, Mahar didn’t even know when her next tournament would be. She signed up for the Griffin Amateur, however, on Monday night. That will take place mid-October.

It feels particularly good to win, given those limited starts. Mahar, a native Australian ranked No. 108 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, isn’t totally sure, but she thinks Tuesday marked the third time she’s been in a playoff. Earlier this summer, she lost the VSGA Stroke Play Championship to teammate Becca DeNunzio – who stood beside the 18th hole Tuesday along with another Tech teammate, Jessica Spicer – in extra holes.

Asked what this victory meant, Mahar pointed to the work she’s done on her game. Recently, that work has taken place on the putting green, and it paid off at Caledonia. Mahar says she finally has her stroke where she wants it.

“It obviously means that I’m working hard enough,” Mahar said of the win. “Sometimes I may feel like I’m taking too much time off, but it just proves that I have a good balance right now. I can take the time off to focus on school and the other things that I need to and then when it’s time to golf, it’s time to focus on golf.

“I think it just really reassure me that what I’m doing is working.”

Clemson and Alabama top first Amway Coaches Poll without Big Ten teams

In the first Amway Coaches Poll without Big Ten teams, Clemson and Alabama sit atop the top 25 rankings.

[jwplayer wLZ8OZt0]

The new Amway Coaches Poll dropped on Sunday and, while Michigan State wasn’t going to be on it this week either way, this version is unique because it is the first Amway Coaches Poll to come out without any Big Ten teams in the ranking.

This means that Ohio State, a perennial top ten team, is nowhere to be found in this list. They were ranked at No. 2 in the preseason poll. Instead, ACC and SEC juggernaughts Clemson and Alabama sit at No. 1 and No. 2 on this version of the rankings.

Of course, things could change soon, as a report came out this morning that the Big Ten will be moving to reinstate the fall season in October after they collectively review a presentation their medical subcommittee gave on new rapid-response testing kits on Saturday.

You can find the full Top 25 on the next page.

Week 2 Amway Coaches Poll: No more Big Ten (but maybe not for long)

The Week 2 Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports dropped today and now does not include the Big Ten, Pac 12 or any other teams…

The Week 2 Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports dropped today and now does not include the Big Ten, Pac 12 or any other teams that, as of today, are not playing this fall.

The poll has Clemson retaining the top spot and Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida, Notre Dame and Texas all rising after their wins this weekend and with Ohio State, Penn State and others no longer included.

As Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported today, though, “For the first time since the Big Ten shut down fall sports on Aug. 11, sources familiar with the situation have transitioned from hopeful to confident the league’s football teams will play in 2020.”

The Big Ten Council of Presidents are expected to vote early this week on starting the season with the target date being October 17.

Were this vote to go in favor of starting the season, the Badgers and other Big Ten teams will both begin playing their conference schedule and rejoin the national picture.

After a No. 12 ranking in the first edition of the Amway Coaches Poll, Paul Chryst and the Wisconsin Badgers would likely rejoin the rankings in a similar position as they prepare to play in mid-October.
