NCAA writer names Alabama football’s biggest ‘fear’ entering November stretch

What is Alabama football’s biggest challenge entering November?

The Alabama Crimson Tide have a tough road ahead of them if they hope to reach the 12-team College Football Playoff.

Entering November, Alabama’s only realistic shot at getting a playoff bid in the first year of the 12-team model is as an at-large team. That’s what happens when you drop two games in conference play, as Jalen Milroe and the Tide did to Vanderbilt and Tennessee.

Alabama’s November stretch includes road trips to Baton Rouge to face the LSU Tigers and to Norman to play the Oklahoma Sooners. There is a home game against a quality Football Championship Subdivision opponent, Mercer. The Bears are No. 8 in the FCS Championship Committee’s Top 10 rankings. Finally, there is the annual Iron Bowl showdown with the Auburn Tigers.

Earlier this week, sports journalist Stan Becton named every playoff hopeful’s “top fear” heading into the final month of the regular season. For Alabama, Becton highlighted the Crimson Tide’s Nov. 9 road trip to Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge.

Writing for NCAA.com, Becton said:

“Fear: Death Valley

Alabama’s toughest game remaining on its schedule is a road trip to LSU, where the Crimson Tide will play in one of the toughest environments in college football — a night game in Death Valley. Alabama lost at LSU in 2022 during the last game it played there. This time, the Tide enter with two losses, meaning another loss could eliminate them from playoff contention.”

There’s no denying LSU is the toughest opponent left on Alabama’s schedule (at least on paper) or that a night game in Tiger Stadium is the toughest environment in college football. There’s also no denying Alabama has been a different team at home than on the road, something that dates to at least 2022 if not further.

But the Crimson Tide have long defied the fates that befall almost every other team that visits Tiger Stadium. Until a 32-31 overtime loss to Jayden Daniels and the Tigers two years ago, Alabama had suffered only nine losses all time in Baton Rouge. The 2022 game was the Tide’s first loss in Tiger Stadium in 12 years.

As fans know, between 1969 and 2000, Alabama didn’t lose a single road game at LSU. While November will not be easy, the Tide have certainly defied the odds before — especially in Baton Rouge.

Kickoff for Alabama-LSU was announced earlier this week. The Tide and Tigers will get underway at 6:30 p.m (CT) on Nov. 9 in Week 11. The game will be televised on ABC.

Alabama schedule: Are the Crimson Tide playing today?

Is Alabama football playing today? Here’s a look at the schedule and the games to come.

Will the Alabama Crimson Tide be on the field today in Week 10 of the 2024 college football schedule?

After a 34-0 shutout victory over the Missouri Tigers at Bryant-Denny Stadium, the Crimson Tide (6-2 overall, 3-2 SEC) are on a bye week and will return to the field on Nov. 9 when Alabama heads to Baton Rouge for its annual showdown with the LSU Tigers in what will be a playoff elimination game for both teams.

LSU (6-2, 3-1) fell to the Texas A&M Aggies, 38-23, in College Station last week to snap a six-game winning streak. The Tigers also have a bye this week and are ranked No. 16 in the US LBM Coaches Poll. Alabama is ranked No. 14 in the coaches poll.

Brian Kelly and the Tigers won the last matchup with Alabama in Tiger Stadium when the two teams met in 2022, a 32-31 classic. Jayden Daniels ran for a 25-yard touchdown in overtime and then hit tight end Mason Taylor for a game-winning 2-point conversion. It was LSU’s first win over Alabama in Baton Rouge since 2010.

Last year, Alabama tamed the Tigers 42-28 in Tuscaloosa. Jalen Milroe would certainly take a repeat performance of that game when the two teams play again next week. Milroe rushed for 155 yards and four touchdowns and threw for 219 more against LSU last November.

Kickoff for Alabama-LSU was announced earlier this week. The Tide and Tigers will play at 6:30 p.m. The game will be televised on ABC.

CFB expert predicts two losses on Alabama’s 2024 schedule

See which two games one expert believes Alabama will lose in the 2024 college football season.

The upcoming 2024 college football season will be interesting for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Not only does the program have to recover from a headline-worthy coaching change, but there was significant roster turnover and the landscape of college football is impacted by serious change.

When legendary head coach Nick Saban announced his decision to retire, the Crimson Tide moved quickly to hire one of the best coaches in the nation, former Washington Huskies lead man, Kalen DeBoer.

Throughout the offseason, experts, analysts, and fans have had a difficult time projecting how Alabama will perform in 2024 with a new coach, a handful of key contributors gone by way of the NFL draft and transfer portal, and with mass conference realignment going into effect.

One college football pundit, Will Backus of CBS Sports predicts the Crimson Tide will lose two games in the upcoming 2024 season: at home against the Georgia Bulldogs and on the road against the Tennessee Volunteers.

“There’s no reason to expect significant drop off from Nick Saban to Kalen DeBoer,” writes Backus. “The Crimson Tide will still be right around the top of the conference and in the College Football Playoff conversation all year long. That being said, Alabama did lose some key players to the transfer portal and have some questions on the roster — including immense turnover at both receiver and in the defensive secondary — that might have them losing some tough games against other premier SEC programs. Ten wins is still more than enough to make a 12-team playoff field, and the Crimson Tide certainly have the capability for more, especially with DeBoer’s track record.”

Expectations are somewhat mitigated for the dynastic program that was still able to reach the final four-team College Football Playoffs despite having an off season. For DeBoer, the pressure is on. While fans aren’t sure what to expect, they do know what they want: to win.

Competing for national championships has become the standard in Tuscaloosa, and Alabama has consistently been in contention to reach the playoffs just about every single year of the format’s decade-long existence.

Losing two games in 2024, as Backus projects, may seem like a sub-standard season for the Crimson Tide. However, it is important to remember that with the playoff field expanding to 12 teams, there’s still a high likelihood that the 10-win resumé would be enough to get them in.

Only time will tell how Alabama will perform in the upcoming season. The nation will get its first glimpse at the post-Saban era on Aug. 31 as the Crimson Tide takes on Western Kentucky at home in Bryant-Denny Stadium to begin the 2024 season.

Game-by-game predictions for Alabama’s 2024 season

With all the changes in the Alabama football program, how is the Crimson Tide expected to perform in 2024? Here are are-by-game predictions.

Alabama football is roughly a month into the 2024 offseason and it has been an absolute whirlwind. After losing to Michigan in the Rose Bowl College Football Playoff semifinal, head coach Nick Saban decided to retire and chaos ensued.

The Crimson Tide hired former Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer to be the successor to Saban, and he has his work cut out for him.

Once DeBoer was brought on staff, a handful of players hit the transfer portal and some high-profile commits reopened their recruitments, though he was able to land a re-commitment from five-star wide receiver Ryan Williams. However, that’s not where the uncertainty ends for Alabama.

The 2024 season will not just come with more than just a new coach on the sidelines of Bryant-Denny Stadium and a somewhat new-looking team on the field. The SEC welcomes in two new teams and has gotten rid of divisions, the College Football Playoff format expanded to 12 teams and the questions stemming from the transfer portal and name, image, likeness policy have yet to be answered.

How will all of this impact Alabama’s performance next season? For a clear answer, we will have to wait and see. For now, let’s try our best to make some predictions.
