College football head coaching tracker

Rank these jobs from best to worst and give us a reason why…

It’s already been a busy off-season of coaching changes in college football and we’re still two weeks from the regular season actually drawing to a close.  With Justin Fuente’s announced firing from Virginia Tech there have now already been 12 head college football coaches fired since the season began.

Some are staying on to finish the year while others technically resigned, but the the fact remains there will be at least 12 different head coaches in college football’s FBS when the 2022 season begins late next summer.

Here at Fighting Irish Wire we’re certainly not expecting Brian Kelly to be exiting anytime soon, even if Kirk Herbstreit has him on a plane to Southern California, but we certainly would be curious about a Kelly assistant getting a chance at a head coaching job.

Below is our tracker of all FBS coaching changes that will be updated through the fall and into the early parts of 2022.

Akron vs Bowling Green Game Preview

Why Akron Will Win

Akron is starting to find a little offense.

It hasn’t been consistent, and it’s not explosive, but it’s been able to hit 300 yards a game in three of the last four games. That might not be a high bar, but  the Zips only got there in four of the six games last season.

Bowling Green isn’t moving the chains.

There’s absolutely no running game – it’s dead last in the nation averaging just 47 yards per game – and there isn’t enough of a passing attack to make up for it.

However …

Week 6 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Bowling Green Will Win

Bowling Green is bad defensively on third downs, and Akron is worse at it.

The Zips have the nation’s least-productive offensive line in pass protection, the secondary continues to get lit up, and there’s no pass rush to bother the Bowling Green backfield.

Bowling Green might have lost last week to Kent State, but it’s been far, far more competitive than Akron over the season.

Week 6 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Akron’s only win over an FBS team since late October of 2018 came against Bowling Green last season. It’s not about to get the second.

It’s not time to start talking MAC championship with Bowling Green, but it played well in a 27-20 loss to Kent State after shocking Minnesota. The team is just playing better than Akron, especially on defense.

Darren Clarke and his wife to reunite at Senior Players after five-month pandemic separation

Clarke’s excitement in playing at the Senior Players Championship might be superseded by the fact that Alison will join him in Akron.

When his wife Alison left Newport Beach, California, on March 8, Darren Clarke could not have imagined they would spend the next five months apart.

After he completed the final round of the PGA Tour Champions’ Hoag Classic, she flew to their home in Portrush, Northern Ireland, just before international travel was halted by the coronavirus pandemic. Clarke found himself alone at their place at The Abaco Club on Winding Bay in the Bahamas from March 14 until five weeks ago, when their eldest son Tyrone managed to join him.

The Clarkes were an ocean away on their eighth wedding anniversary on April 11.

So Clarke’s excitement to return to Firestone Country Club for the first time in nine years for this week’s Bridgestone Senior Players Championship might be superseded by the fact that Alison will join him in Akron on Saturday night.

“That will be wonderful,” Clarke said by phone from Abaco on Thursday. “She’s been back in Northern Ireland with our son Conor. With airports, borders, everything being shut, it’s been a logistical nightmare trying to get everybody together. It actually hasn’t been possible.”

The 2003 winner of the World Golf Championships-NEC Invitational and the 2011 British Open champion, Clarke will be playing his first Champions Tour event since the lockdown began. He doesn’t know what lies ahead for the rest of the season amid COVID-19, except that tour protocols will reduce him to delivery or carryout from his favorite restaurant, Ken Stewart’s Grille.

“I’ve got no idea what the real world is really like,” he said, days from emerging from his pandemic paradise.

Clarke was frustrated he was forced to communicate with his wife and sons via WhatsApp and video calls twice a day, but admitted, “At least we were seeing each other a daily basis.” Despite the separation anxiety, Clarke knows he was lucky to be quarantined at The Abaco Club.

He said Abaco Island has had only one known case of COVID-19. The club has repaired damage from Hurricane Dorian, a Category 5 storm that destroyed nearby Marsh Harbour last September; he said that town may be five years from normalcy. The Abaco Club’s Scottish-style links course regarded as the best in the Bahamas remained open, as did its beach bar Flippers, 20 yards from the first tee.

Clarke said he cooked for himself, played golf and went fly fishing for permit, which he said is his “thing” while there.

“They’re the holy grail of flying fishing,” Clarke said. “They’re very spooky. You’ve got to basically be able to throw a minimum 80-foot cast in 25 mph crosswinds and land it in a one-foot square. You can do all that perfect and they still won’t eat.

“That’s my complete obsession. They call it permit fever. I’ve been doing it now for a good few years. They are incredibly difficult and frustrating. Not only do I do that, but I also try to play golf. So I picked two of the hardest things you could possibly do.”

With Clarke were a few good friends — course superintendent Matt Dimase, food and beverage manager John Wiley, development officer Kevin O’Malley and golf director Brian Shaver.

Clarke, 51, has always done everything to excess, and that included consuming his Flippers drink of choice, a Sea Breeze (usually vodka and cranberry with a splash of grapefruit).

“They’ve got a very heavy pour down here, which leads to a very sore head in the mornings,” Clarke said. “I tend to enjoy myself wherever I go and these five months have been no exception.

“Unfortunately, I’ve been dragged towards Flippers a lot, so exercise hasn’t been at the top of the agenda. Eating and drinking however have. It’s been quite a good fun time with my friends, but I’m ready to get back to playing again and seeing the guys on tour and trying to be competitive again.”

Five months of merriment did not keep Clarke from working on his game.

“I’ve been practicing an awful lot. Hopefully the state of the game is OK,” he said. “You can practice all you want, but you never really know until you have a card in your hand, until you get into competition. I worked really hard on a lot of things I thought I needed to and we shall see what happens next week.”

Clarke captured the 2011 British Open at Royal St. George’s, at age 42 becoming the oldest winner of the event since Roberto De Vicenzo in 1967. But Clarke said he no longer basks in that glow.

“It’s wonderful to win the tournament that I wanted to win as a kid. The guys jab at me every now and again when they win a hole off me in Nassau,” he said. “It’s not something that I think about an awful lot. I achieved my dream, which not too many people actually do, so I’m very fortunate in that way. Maybe I should revisit it a little bit more often in my thoughts.”

Winless on his two years on the Champions Tour, Clarke can think of no better place for that breakthrough than Firestone, where his 12-under par 270 in 2003 was four strokes better than Jonathan Kaye.

“It would be wonderful to win at Firestone,” he said. “I’ve given myself a few chances to win, not as many as I would have liked. That’s why I’ve been working my a– off and practicing as hard as I have. I want to win. If that was to come sooner rather later, I would really enjoy it.”

With the impending arrival of Alison, the Bridgestone Senior Players will provide more than a South Course challenge for Clarke.

Miss Northern Ireland and runner-up as Miss United Kingdom in 1987, Alison (nee Campbell) founded Belfast-based ACA Models in 1990. Alison met Clarke on a blind date set up by golfer Graeme McDowell, a Portrush native.

Clarke’s wife Heather died in 2006 at age 39 after a four-year battle with breast cancer. Their sons Tyrone and Conor were 8 and 5, respectively.

“I was still living in London and Graeme suggested, ‘I’ve got a friend you might want to meet,’” Clarke said of finding Alison. “We spent a weekend in London and got along really well. It was time for me to move back to Northern Ireland again. She has her business there.

“It was one of those things that just worked out. She’s a wonderful lady.”

Senior Players Championship announces fans will not be permitted

The Bridgestone Senior Players Championship competition rounds are scheduled for Aug. 13-16 at Firestone Country Club’s South Course in Akron.

Tournament officials for the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship announced Wednesday that spectators will not be permitted on the grounds at Firestone Country Club this year because of the ongoing health and safety issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Bridgestone Senior Players Championship competition rounds are scheduled for Aug. 13-16 at Firestone Country Club’s South Course in Akron.

“In this unprecedented COVID-19 climate, contesting the 2020 Bridgestone Senior Players Championship without spectators was the safest path moving forward,” Executive Director Don Padgett III said in a prepared statement.

“Our key focus since the beginning has been the well-being of our players, fans, volunteers and partners, but also our ability to conduct this tournament in its entirety so that we can once again create a charitable impact here in Northeast Ohio. Today’s decision will enable us to ensure both.”

Online ticket purchasers for this year’s event will be refunded by their original method of purchase automatically. For more information on the refund policy, fans are encouraged to visit www.BridgestoneSENIORPLAYERS.com.

Since 1984, professional golf events held at Firestone Country Club have raised more than $29 million for area charities, including $825,000 from the 2019 Bridgestone Senior Players Championship.

“Thanks to our title sponsor, Bridgestone, founding partners Westfield and FirstEnergy as well as other area supporters the Bridgestone Senior Players will continue to benefit key charities in our area that have meant so much to Northeast Ohio in recent times,” Padgett said.

Retief Goosen made birdie on the final two holes last year in the first year of the Senior Players at Firestone for his initial PGA Tour Champions title. Goosen finished two shots ahead of Jay Haas and Tim Petrovic.

The 72-hole major championship at Firestone Country Club is set to feature a one-day pro-am on Aug. 12. All professionals, amateurs and caddies will undergo COVID-19 testing in advance of their participation, in addition to other safety protocols implemented for the tournament.

Firestone Country Club has hosted professional golf every year since 1954. The annual Ambassador of Golf Event presented by the FirstEnergy Foundation was canceled earlier this year because of the pandemic.

The Bridgestone Senior Players Championship will continue to raise funds and awareness for its seven charitable beneficiaries, including Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank, Akron Children’s Hospital, The First Tee of Greater Akron, Summa Health System, Cleveland Clinic Akron General, University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and United Way of Summit County.

LeBron James hopes for conviction after arrests in Na’kia Crawford murder

LeBron James tweeted that he hopes for a conviction to the full extent of the law in the murder of Akron’s Nakia Crawford.

18-year old Na’kia Crawford was shot and killed while out running errands with her grandmother on Sunday in Akron, Ohio. With this tragedy hitting home for LeBron James, he and his business partners have been trying to use their platform to bring attention to Crawford’s death and hope to find justice. On Thursday, authorities said they had suspects in custody and LeBron shared the news, while also hoping that the arrests result in convictions.

Earlier in the week, Maverick Carter also shared a photo on Instagram and posted for people in Akron to come forward with information that would lead to justice for Crawford.

Violence towards Black women and transgender people has become an even bigger focus of protesters as of late. There have yet to be any arrests made in the murder of Lousiville’s Breonna Taylor, while two Black transgender women were killed within the last week, Riah Milton in Ohio and Dominique “Rem’Mie” Fells in Pennsylvania.

Akron out of running to fill opening on PGA Tour schedule

Akron and Detroit were listed among sites to host an event before The Memorial in Columbus. But Akron appears to be out.

Firestone Country Club apparently is no longer being considered to fill an opening on the PGA Tour’s revamped schedule after Thursday’s cancellation of the John Deere Classic due to coronavirus concerns.

According to Golfweek, Akron and Detroit were among the alternative sites and Rob Oller of the Columbus Dispatch reported that Columbus could be in the mix, with one source saying it appeared to be the top option. According to the Dispatch story, Lexington, Kentucky, and Carmel, Indiana, are also possibilities.

“There are multiple options, more than a handful,” a PGA Tour player told Golfweek.

But Don Padgett III, executive director of the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship, said via text Friday that the Champions Tour major Aug. 12-16 would be the only professional golf tournament staged in Akron this year.

[jwplayer 7NBaZ2A0-vgFm21H3]

The John Deere was scheduled for July 9-12 in Silvis, Illinois, and was to be the first PGA Tour event to allow spectators.

Because of COVID-19, the tour could be considering keeping players in the same city for consecutive weeks. The Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club is set for July 16-19, the week after the now-open date. The Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club is scheduled for July 2-5.

The Detroit event will be played without fans; the Memorial has not been given approval to allow spectators.

Representatives of four tournaments preparing to host professional golf events in Ohio this year recently wrote a letter to Governor Mike DeWine seeking permission to allow the public to attend, according to the Dispatch. Those four were the Memorial, the Bridgestone Senior Players, the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship and the LPGA Tour’s Marathon Classic in Sylvania.

The last time the same course hosted pro events in consecutive weeks was in 2014, when Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina was the site of the U.S. Open, followed by the U.S. Women’s Open.

Ohio State’s Scarlet Course and Scioto Country Club have held professional tournaments, but the Dispatch reported Scarlet had not been contacted by the tour as of Friday and Scioto did not know of any feelers in that regard.

The Nationwide, a Korn Ferry Tour event, is scheduled for Aug. 20-23 at OSU Scarlet.
