The Volunteers are coming off an OT thriller. They beat Pittsburgh 34-27 behind 325 passing yards and 2 TDs from QB Hendon Hooker. WR Cedric Tillman had 9 receptions for 162 yards and the game-winning TD. The Tennessee defense had 4 sacks and an interception but gave up 141 rushing yards.

Tennessee will look to run away with this game early and then sit on the lead. Their defense will prove to be far too much for the Zips’ offense and they should force multiple turnovers and punts. Hooker and the Volunteers’ offense will look to bounce back after a strenuous game last week against a much better Pittsburgh team than their current opponents, the Zips.

The Spartans vanquished another MAC opponent, topping Western Michigan 35-13 for the narrow cover. Michigan State led just 21-13 heading to the 4th quarter but pulled away with 2 late touchdowns to seal the deal.

Look, Akron (+1500) is horrible, and definitely in the conversation of which team is the worst FBS program in the nation right now. But Michigan State (-10000) will cost you $100 for every $1 won. There is no way to ever justify betting that kind of a heavy favorite, although people still choose to do so.

AVOID.

Against the spread

MICHIGAN STATE -34.5 (-110) is going to crush Akron, and the Zips are going to provide very little resistance.

QB Payton Thorne and the Michigan State passing attack should have a healthy amount of yards and several touchdowns against an Akron defense that was thrashed by an FCS opponent on its own field.

Over/Under

OVER 55.5 (-110) could potentially be handled by Michigan State with little to no help from Akron. The Spartans have the offensive weapons to go for a 60-burger, although coach Mel Tucker Jr. is likely to call off the dogs since he is a classy coach. Still, don’t be surprised to see at least 40-45 points on the board by halftime.

The No. 13-seed Akron Zips (24-9) and No. 4 UCLA Bruins (25-7) tangle Thursday in a first-round East Region game of the NCAA Tournament. The gamet at the Moda Center on Portland is slated to tip off at 9:50 p.m. ET. Akron made the NCAA field after winning the Mid-American Conference title. The Zips have been dialed in from long distance in winning 8 consecutive games since Feb. 19. UA has connected on 39.8% of its 3-point attempts over that stretch. The slow-tempo Zips also get a big chunk of their points on uncontested 15-footers and have averaged 22 free-throw attempts per games since Feb. 6.

UCLA had a five-game win streak snapped in a 84-76 loss to Arizona in the Pac-12 Tournament championship game. The Bruins, ranked No. 12 in the nation, rebound the ball and take care of it an high levels. UCLA has also been solid — and lately, improving — from beyond the arc.

Mix in the rebounding edge and the superior ballhandling, and a BRUINS -13.5 (-112) ticket has some slight value.

Akron beat No. 5 Buffalo, 70-68, Thursday. UA has won six consecutive games, and has an average margin of victory of 10.5 points over that span. The Zips met the Rockets once during the regular season (Jan. 28). Toledo shot 58.9% from the field in winning that game 84-76.

Toledo went 17-3 over 20 MAC games. The Rockets won the MAC West while twice winning five or more league games in a row. They entered this tournament on a five-game run of victories and then squeaked by Central Michigan, 72-71, Thursday (UT was favored by 16).

A youthful Akron squad is trending the right way and with growing confidence. The Zips’ ability to knock down midrange jumpers is quite good, and that’s sometimes a blind spot for this Toledo defense.

UA has locked down improving numbers in turnover rate and free-throw frequency of late. Peg the Zips as a near-40% proposition in this game. So, AKRON (+190) has value.

Against the spread

In its regular-season loss to UT, UA was undone by a 26-7 Rockets run bracketing halftime. The opening 15 minutes were an even exchange, and Akron got within 4 late.

This play may have been more a diamond in the rough and had more value for Akron if Toledo didn’t have a scare Thursday. But AKRON +5.5 (-115) is worth a look.

Over/Under

This Buckeye State series has produced four straight Overs. Akron’s offensive growth has been accompanied by an uptick in pace.

The No. 5-seed Buffalo Bulls (19-10) and No. 4 Akron Zips (21-9) battle in a Thursday Mid-American Conference Tournament quarterfinal in Cleveland. The contest at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse is slated to tip off at 1:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Buffalo vs. Akron odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Buffalo went 13-6 in the conference, finishing fifth. Senior F Jeenathan Williams averaged 20.5 points per game over his last six outings and is the MAC’s fourth-leading scorer on the season (19.2 PPG). The Bulls won nine straight games from Feb. 5-26, but they closed out the regular season with two straight losses.

Akron went 14-6 in the MAC, tying for third. With a playing style that runs counter to their name, the Zips grind out slow-tempo games. Since Jan. 22, they are 10-4 and held opponents to 64 points or less nine times. In its only meeting with Buffalo, however, Akron won 88-76 at home Jan. 1.

But Akron may struggle at the outset of this one. The Zips have played a very weak schedule of late. While they have played fast teams tough the season, this particular draw — an athletic, high-energy Bulls team — may put Akron behind the eight-ball. Having Williams gives Buffalo an ace up its sleeve.

On just a slight lean (consider a partial-unit play), TAKE BUFFALO -1.5 (-120).

Over/Under

The Over is 3-1 across the last four games of this series. Slow Akron was dragged into four Overs in the five aforementioned games against quick MAC foes.

Ball State is coming off a 24-17 loss against Miami (Ohio) on Oct. 23. That loss snapped a three-game win streak, and that trio of wins was earned against teams — Army, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan — that currently have winning records.

Two of those wins were on the road. Straight up, BSU is 2-2 away from home this season. Against the spread, the Cardinals are 7-4 since 2019 (5-2 ATS as a road favorite).

Akron lost at home against Buffalo on Oct. 23. The Zips have lost four of their last five, and it’s been the UA defense posing the team’s biggest problem. At 38.9 points allowed per game, Akron ranks 126th in FBS.

These programs haven’t met since 2017. Akron leads the all-time series, 12-11-1.

Over/Under

The top play in this “MACtion” contest on a chilly night in Northeast Ohio is the UNDER 58.5 (-110).

The Cardinals do well to take care of the football while limiting negative plays and turnovers. The Cards will be up against an abysmal Akron run defense ranked 122nd in the nation (217.5 yards allowed per game).

And while Ball State isn’t really a play at -20.5, a one-sided 35-to-10-type game would not at all be a surprise. Any sort of back-and-forth spiral of scoring into the 60s would be.

The Zips are coming off their first victory of the season, a 35-14 over FCS Bryant last week at InfoCision Stadium. It was Akron’s first win and cover after getting dusted in its first two games at Auburn, 60-10, and home to Temple, 45-24.

The Buckeyes bounced back last week against Tulsa with a 41-20 win, although questions remain about Ohio State’s offense and defense. The D has allowed 471.3 total yards per game, and 289.7 passing yards per contest while yielding 28.7 PPG. That simply will not do.

It’s odd to type this, but AKRON +48.5 (-108) is the play against Ohio State -48.5 (-112). Of course, the Zips aren’t going to win this one outright, or come anywhere close, but the Buckeyes just haven’t been hitting on all cylinders. They’re 0-2-1 ATS to date, and the books are not adjusting yet to their lack of defense. Akron should be able to hit double digits here.

As mentioned above, the Zips should be able to post at least 10 points. But I still think this game goes UNDER 67.5 (-135). Even on its worst day, the Ohio State D isn’t letting this Akron team march up and down the field.

And Ohio State ‘should’ have a big enough lead by the third quarter, calling off the dogs for the second half. It will be a blowout, but the Buckeyes aren’t posting a 60-burger as Auburn did against Akron, either.

The Zips won just one of their six games inside the MAC last season, so facing an SEC team on the road certainly isn’t optimal. Akron makes its first foray into SEC country since a 28-3 loss to South Carolina in 2018.

Auburn turns to head coach Bryan Harsin to lead the way. Perhaps he can unlock the potential of QB Bo Nix. We might also see LSU transfer QB T.J. Finley getting a chance to run the show. The fact the Tigers lost their top three wideouts from 2020 certainly doesn’t help, so expect Auburn to lean on RB Tank Bigsby early on.

The Tigers spanked the Zips 42-0 in the only previous meeting between these schools in 1988.

Against the spread

AUBURN -37.5 (-115) is a bit on the risky side, mostly because of its struggling offense. The Tigers need to be better in 2021, and hopefully Harsin can bring the magic he had working with quarterbacks at Boise State.

The Auburn defense held the opposition to just 24.7 points per game last season, and the Zips will have a difficult time trying to solve that unit.

Over/Under

UNDER 55.5 (-108) is the play, mostly because of Akron’s struggles on offense, and Auburn’s sturdy defense. Those are the two biggest reasons not to roll the dice and go Over.

Plus, we really need to see a big improvement from the Auburn pass game before counting on the Tigers to start ticking off Over results.

The Akron Zips and Auburn Tigers open their 2021 regular season Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Akron vs. Auburn odds and lines; check back for our college football picks and predictions.

The Zips fumbled their way to a 1-5 record last season with the lone victory being a 31-3 rout of Bowling Green. In fact, that is Akron’s only win in the previous 23 regular-season games.

The Tigers came up short against Northwestern in the Citrus Bowl 35-19. Auburn lost three of its final four games last season, and five games overall. This will be Auburn’s first game against a MAC team since a 55-16 win over Kent State Sept. 14, 2019.

Akron didn’t win last week, falling 24-10 at Ohio, but the Zips did something they accomplished just once last season – cover. They have dropped 19 in a row dating back to Oct. 27, 2018, a win over Central Michigan 17-10. Their last road victory was Oct. 20, 2018, a 24-23 victory at Kent State in overtime.
Kent State rolled up 62 points in last week’s 38-point road win at Bowling Green, covering the 20.5-point number. The Golden Flashes have racked up 549.0 total yards per game to rank sixth in the nation, 253.5 rushing yards per contest to check in at 13th, while averaging 44.5 PPG to rank 10th.
These two Northeast Ohio rivals battle for the Wagon Wheel, a trophy awarded for the winner of this series since 1946. Akron has won four of the past five in this series, with Kent State winning last year 26-3. The Zips lead the all-time series 35-25-2. Kent State (-3334) is not even an option. Any veteran gambler knows that even the surest thing isn’t so sure. Just bet the spread. AVOID this huge risk for such a small return.

Against the spread (ATS)

KENT STATE -27 (-110) has been impressive, led by QB Dustin Crum. He has thrown for 490 yards, six touchdowns and just one interception through two games while also rushing for a score.

The Golden Flashes feature a 7-1 ATS mark across the past eight against losing teams, while cashing in five of the past six inside the league. Akron, on the other hand, has covered just seven of the past 27, and two of the previous 13 as an underdog. The last time the Zips covered back-to-back games was Nov. 23-Dec. 1, 2018.

Over/Under (O/U)
