49ers WR depth chart heading into Week 1 after Brandon Aiyuk contract extension

With Brandon Aiyuk’s new extension signed, what could the 49ers’ depth chart at wide receiver look like heading into Week 1?

The speculation can officially end. Brandon Aiyuk is set to become a member of the San Francisco 49ers for the next five seasons. According to multiple reports, the star pass catcher inked a long-awaited four-year contract extension worth $120 million.

While there was always the possibility of Aiyuk resigning, Aiyuk’s hold-in included a trade request and a flurry of rumors. With Aiyuk’s new contract in place, the 49ers will finally get a picture of what their receiver room will likely look like for the upcoming 2024 season.

Aiyuk will slide into one of the 49ers’ starting wide receiver positions alongside fellow star route runner Deebo Samuel. Jauan Jennings will be on the field in multiple positions, securing the No. 3 wideout spot.

Behind the trio of Aiyuk, Samuel and Jennings, the 49ers depth chart at wide receiver will feature new faces. 2024 first-round pick Ricky Pearsall and preseason standout Jacob Cowing will suit up behind Samuel, Aiyuk and Jennings for the 2024 campaign, with Ronnie Bell and veteran Chris Conley also available out of the wide receiver room.

Here’s a look at how the 49ers’ WR depth chart could look like with Aiyuk’s new extension.

  • Brandon Aiyuk – No. 11
  • Deebo Samuel – No. 19
  • Jauan Jennings – No. 15
  • Chris Conley – No. 84
  • Jacob Cowing (rookie) – No. 83
  • Ricky Pearsall (rookie) – No. 14
  • Ronnie Bell – No. 10

If Aiyuk is unable to suit up for week one against the New York Jets on Monday Night Football in just over a week, Jennings will likely see more of a role in the passing game alongside rookies Pearsall and Cowing. Conley  and Bell could also see an increase in reps at wide receiver.

Kyle Shanahan not worried about superstar WR missing practice time

The star pass catcher has yet to suit up for a practice at training camp.

While the buzz continues to heighten on the Brandon Aiyuk contract saga with no timetable on a solution, the standout pass catcher has continued to miss valuable time on the practice field as the start of the regular season inches closer. Aiyuk has reported to camp but has yet to practice as he is “holding in” with one year remaining on his contract with the San Francisco 49ers.

However, the San Francisco 49ers head coach doesn’t seem too concerned with Aiyuk’s lack of time on the field. Following practice on Monday, Kyle Shanahan was asked about Aiyuk’s missed time on the practice. Shanahan told reporters he has a feeling that Aiyuk is finding ways to stay in shape despite holding in during training camp.

I trust Brandon knows what he’s got to do for this year to get ready to play. I have a feeling he’s finding a way to stay in shape and do those things. But there’s a football shape element that I know he is eager to get back to and us too. So hopefully we can get to that soon. But Brandon knows what he’s got to do to be in shape for the season and I feel confident he is doing that.

The 49ers have experience getting players back up to game speed after extended holdouts into training camp. Last season, Nick Bosa missed the entire training camp, signing his extension just four days before the start of the regular season. However, Aiyuk is holding in, still at camp, but not practicing, which could benefit his eventual return to the field.

Yet, still, everything is on the table regarding Aiyuk’s situation. Despite multiple trade rumors looming, a recent report from NFL Network indicated the 49ers have re-engaged talks with the start wide receiver. Reports have also surfaced regarding the framework of different trades being in place with multiple teams for Aiyuk.

Stay tuned to Niners Wire for all the latest updates around Aiyuk’s contract situation with the 49ers.

Does 49ers WR signing impact Brandon Aiyuk contract talks?

The veteran pass catcher played eight games with the Miami Dolphins last season.

On Thursday, the San Francisco 49ers made an addition to their receiving core. The 49ers signed veteran pass catcher Robbie Chosen, formerly known as Robbie Anderson.

Chosen has played eight seasons in the NFL, most recently with Mike McDaniel and the Miami Dolphins. Chosen played nine games with the Dolphins last season, Chosen notched four receptions for 126 yards and a touchdown. Prior to Chosen joining the Dolphins, the Temple product played with the New York Jets, Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals.

Although there is currently constant chatter and speculation surrounding Brandon Aiyuk’s contract talks with the 49ers or a potential trade, the addition of another speedy wide receiver shouldn’t play a role in Aiyuk’s situation in Santa Clara.

While Chosen adds a serious speed threat to whatever field he steps on, it would be a surprise if he’s leaned on as a potential contingency plan if Aiyuk exits the Bay Area in a trade.

With proven veterans like Deebo Samuel and Jauan Jennings filling San Francisco’s receiving core and young players like Ricky Pearsall dealing with an injury and Jacob Cowing coming off an injury, Chosen will likely have a chance to fill reps and make a case for a roster spot in practice and the preseason.

However once Pearsall and Cowing return to form, they will likely eat up reps in Aiyuk’s absence along with other young pass catchers Ronnie Bell and Danny Gray.

Despite having some proven experience with the Jets and Panthers and some familiarity with scheme after playing with McDaniel in Miami, Chosen’s arrival in the Bay Area shouldn’t have much impact on Aiyuk’s situation with the 49ers.

Report: Brandon Aiyuk meeting with 49ers on Monday

Brandon Aiyuk is reportedly set to meet with the 49ers on Monday.

Another step in the Brandon Aiyuk saga is set for Monday.

During an appearance on NFL Live, former NFL defensive back Ryan Clark reported that Aiyuk would be meeting with the 49ers on Monday. While there are currently no clear details about the meeting, the two sides getting together could produce different options such as an extension or trade request.

Aiyuk is notably entering the final year of his rookie deal and is seeking a new contract. While Aiyuk’s fifth season is fully guaranteed, he did not report to the 49ers offseason mini-camp programs. Training camp is still weeks away, but his holdout could potentially continue as practice for the new season begins.

Since being drafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft, Aiyuk has spent four seasons with the 49ers. The Arizona State product is coming off a career-high season with 1342 yards receiving to go along with 75 receptions and seven touchdowns.
