Texas A&M Players’ Monday press conference: Week 4 quotes

Players’ Monday press conference: Week 4 quotes

`The headline coming into Texas A&M’s week 3 matchup with the Miami Hurricanes was the change at the quarterback position for the Aggies, as the veteran, Max Johnson replaced the struggling Haynes King in his first career start with the program.

In what was a low-scoring affair marred by pre-game suspensions, controversial targeting calls, and attrition near the end of the game, Johnson, along with running back Devon Achane, and wide receiver Ainias Smith led the offense to 3 scoring drives and held on to win 17-9, while an outstanding defensive effort prevented the Hurricanes from scoring a single touchdown.

On Monday, Jimbo Fisher and a group of players including Albert Regis, Devon Achane, Ainias Smith, and Edgerrin Cooper spoke to the local media, answering questions about their recent victory, while looking forward to their all-important week 4 matchup vs. the Arkansas Razorbacks at AT&T Stadium.

Here are the most notable quotes from Albert Regis, Devon Achane, Ainias Smith, and Edgerrin Cooper.

Texas A&M Players Press Conference Week 3

Layden Robinson, Ainias Smith, and Demani Richardson all spoke during Monday’s press conference

Texas A&M is attempting to move forward from their disastrous Sept. 10th loss to the Appalachian State Mountaineers,  After being ranked 6th in both the AP and USA Today Coaches Poll going into the game, the Aggies have surprisingly remained in both rankings after the loss, dropping to 22nd in the Coaches Poll, and 24th in the AP Top 25.

On Monday, Head coach Jimbo Fisher and select players spoke to the media, answering questions about the loss, while looking towards their all-important prime-time matchup this Saturday against the 13th-ranked (AP Poll) Miami Hurricanes.

After players including Layden Robinson, Ainias Smith, and Demani Richardson took the mic, Fisher came in right after to detail just what went wrong against Appalachian State, and how important this week’s practice is to fix whatever caused this Aggies roster to struggle for four quarters against the men from Boone, North Carolina.

Here are some of the most notable quotes from Layden Robinson, Ainias Smith, and Demani Richardson:

Three Aggies make Pro Football Network’s All-America Team

Three Aggies make Pro Football Network’s All-America Team

The honors continue to roll in for select members of the 2022 Texas A&M roster, as Pro Football Network has released their Preseason All-America Team, which includes three well-known Aggies throughout the 2nd and 3rd team selections.

  • Offensive lineman (Right guard) Layden Robinson was designated 2nd-Team, Offensive line. Going into his redshirt junior season, Robinson is one of the most feared run blockers in the country, while showing strength and balance in pass pro. Robinson is also one of the vocal leaders on an experienced offensive line that looks to become one of the predominant strengths on offense throughout the season.
  • Wide receiver/punt returner Ainias Smith was selected to the 3rd-Team, Special Teams as a punt returner. Smith is going into his senior season as the presumed leader on offense, joining Layden Robinson in that regard. Smith is coming off of a 2021 season where he recorded 47 receptions for 509 yards and 6 touchdowns, with a 10.8 yard per catch average. Whoever secures the quarterback spot will be looking Smith’s way during key moments on offense.
  • Defensive back Antonio Johnson was designated 3rd-Team, Defense at the safety position. Johnson is slowly approaching superstar status and is expecting to take an even bigger leap this season as one of the most dominant defenders in the country, slated to play at the nickel corner and safety position during the 2022 season. In 2021, Johnson’s impressive stat line consisted of 79 tackles, 53 solo tackles, 1 sack, 5 pass deflections, and 1 interception.

New look offense? What we learned from Texas A&M’s fall camp press conference

Ainias Smith takes to the mic to officially kick off fall camp!

It’s finally here folks, the start of a new college football season, and more importantly, the beginning stages of the 2022 Texas A&M Football campaign as fall camp has officially begun. Earlier this afternoon, the annual first-day press conference was held, offering the media a chance to ask offensive and defensive team leaders wide receiver Ainias Smith, and defensive back Antonio Johnson questions regarding team philosophy, their outlook on the season, etc.

Right out of the gate, Ainias Smith, who is entering his senior season and final year with the team, described the 2022 offenses’ internal mindset, while continually learning from the mistakes they made during the 2021 season:

“Let’s just say all the keys are being put into motion that we need. Right now, the mindset is totally different. We came up short and lost some games we felt like we shouldn’t have. Now, we’re coming back for vengeance.

“We’re expecting to be very explosive. I’ll just say that.”

While discussing the talented 2022 class who are collectively gearing up to become heavy contributors on both sides of the ball as soon as the September 3rd opener, Smith opined on what they bring to the table, and his leadership role within the offense as the senior member of the wide receiver core:

“The young guys, they came in with a different mindset. It’s driving the older guys to compete a whole lot more. There is a whole lot of competition everywhere. This year, it’s like a brotherhood.”

“Our leadership is there. Our keys are there. Everything has been clicking.”

Finally, teammate and fellow speaker Antonio Johnson later described Smith’s leadership qualities and importance to the team moving forward in camp and leading into the season:

“He’s a leader. On offense, he’s that guy who will be whoever he needs to be… It shows his versatility. In the backfield, out wide, punt return. He’s just a leader and people look up to him.”

Whoever secures the starting Quarterback position this season for the Aggies will be heavily relying on Ainias Smith every week, but more so need his leadership qualities to lead a relatively young offensive unit within the treacherous SEC landscape.

Report: Charges against Aggies WR Ainias Smith have been dropped

On to the 2022 season!

It has been reported that the charges against Texas A&M Wide receiver Ainias Smith have officially been dropped according to his attorney on the case, Craig Greening, after speaking to Mark Berman of FOX26 earlier this afternoon.

I received word from the Brazos County Attorney’s office that they are refusing to prosecute all charges filed by the University Police Department.. Essectially means all the charges are dismissed.

Im just happy that the Brazos County Attorneys office looked at this quickly and took swift action to exoncerate Ainias smith off all charges.

For background, Ainias Smith was suspended by both the school and the athletic department after his July 20th arrest, as the University Police charged him with possession of fewer than two grams of marijuana, DWI, and the unlawful carrying of a weapon stored in one of the vehicle departments. However, after more evidence came out that Smith had actually blown under the legal limit in regards to his DWI charge, while the marijuana actually belonged to the passenger as Smith claimed from the beginning, the suspension was lifted by the university after the appropriate amount of information was gathered and processed to come to an accurate conclusion.

The fact that the Brazos County Attorney’s office came to such a quick decision in dropping the charges shows that our justice system is still in good hands at the local level, but the fact that this cost Smith the opportunity to represent Texas A&M at SEC media days last Thursday can never be undone.

On the field, this is fantastic news for the offense moving forward, and Smith can get right back to focusing on fall camp and the 2022 season, looking to help lead the Aggies towards new heights in what looks to be his final year with the squad.

Reports: Ainias Smith’s suspension has been lifted

Great news for the the Aggies veteran receiver.

Craig Greening, the attorney who is representing Ainias Smith, has told Mark Berman of FOX26 in Houston that the school’s suspension of Smith, has been lifted.

Smith was suspended in accordance with school and athletic department policy, following his arrest on July 20th by University Police on charges of DWI, possession of less than two ounces of marijuana, and unlawfully carrying a weapon.  But as Greening told Berman in an earlier interview, the facts of the case seemed to color a different picture.

I’ve reviewed the police reports in the case. I’m board certified in criminal law and I’m designated as a lawyer/scientist certified by the American Chemical Society; I’ve done DWIs for years. I’ve prosecuted them and I’ve defended them. I’ve reviewed the reports in this case and it was obvious that Mr. Smith was not intoxicated.

Now that we have the passenger’s statements stating that the marijuana was his and that Mr. Smith didn’t know about it, never possessed it and also never smoked marijuana that day, there was no crime committed by Mr. Smith from what I’ve reviewed and all the reports that I’ve been able to see up to this point.

It appears that the university has gathered the information necessary and feels that they are in a position to be comfortable removing Smith’s suspension, and according to Greening, Smith can now take part in practices when they get rolling for fall camp.

Ainias Smith arrested early Wednesday

Aggies playmaker Ainias Smith arrested Wednesday morning

When thinking about the Aggies football team in 2022, there aren’t many players who will be more important to success than senior wide receiver Ainias Smith.

Unfortunately, Smith is facing some adversity leading into the season, as according to reports from Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle, he was arrested early Wednesday morning. According to Zwerneman, A&M police charged Smith with driving while intoxicated, unlawful carrying of a weapon, and possession of less than two ounces of marijuana, and as of this writing Smith had not been released on bond.

Smith was listed by the program as one of the three players who would appear along with head coach Jimbo Fisher at SEC Media days on Thursday, but that status would obviously seem to be up in the air.

Stay tuned for updates as we learn more.

Three Aggies set to join coach Fisher at the 2022 SEC media days

These three Aggies will represent Texas A&M at SEC media days.

The SEC has announced their slate of player participants in next week’s 2022 SEC Media Days at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta. This four-day event is an opportunity for high-profile SEC players, from all fourteen member schools, to answer questions regarding the 2022 season.

Coach Fisher and his Aggies are set to take the podium on Thursday, July 21. Accompanying coach Fisher will be A&M’s senior defensive back, Demani Richardson, junior offensive lineman, Layden Robinson, and senior wide receiver, Ainias Smith.

It’ll be great to hear from these young men and get a glimpse into the mindset of a few Aggies’ leaders as they set their sights on bringing a National Championship to College Station in 2022.

Ainias Smith makes Mike Farrell’s top-50 WR’s list

Ainias Smith makes Mike Farrell’s top-50 WR’s list

On Thursday, Mike Farrell released his top-50 wide receiver’s list for the 2022 college football season. Coming in at No. 44 is Aggies’ own, Ainias Smith.

Smith, a senior from Missouri City, TX, will look to build upon and exceed his 2020 and 2021 production and remain the alpha in the Aggies’ wide receiver room. In 2020, Smith played in 10 games and totaled 564 receiving yards on 43 receptions. He finished the season with six receiving touchdowns. Smith was also effective as a rusher totaling nearly 300 rushing yards on 49 attempts – an average of six yards per attempt. He finished the season with four rushing touchdowns, as well.

In 2021, Smith’s production slightly declined as he totaled 509 receiving yards, on 47 receptions, in 12 games played. Smith matched his six touchdown receptions but his yards per catch and yards per game dropped from 13.1 yards/catch in 2020 to 10.8 in 2021, and 56.4 yards/game in 2020 to 42.4 in 2021. It may be safe to suggest that a banged-up quarterback room led to this slight decline following Kellen Mond’s consistency, availability and production in 2020.

With a heated quarterback battle underway in College Station, Smith will look to be the go-to guy for whoever comes out victorious as QB1.
