Aidan O’Connell set to start for Raiders week 13 vs Chiefs

Seeing Aidan O’Connell practice this week, Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce has named him the starter week 13 vs the Kansas City Chiefs.

Just in time for the loss of Gardner Minshew, the Raiders get back their former starter, Aidan O’Connell from injured reserve and he is set to start Friday when the Raiders face off against the Chiefs in Kansas City.

“Feel good about Aidan,” said head coach Antonio Pierce. “He’s been dialed in obviously throughout this time that he’s been on IR, he’s been in all the meetings, he’s been very encouraging on the sideline, he’s got that laser eye focus right now. Great opportunity for him.”

O’Connell had been named the team’s starter over Minshew in week six and in his second start, he suffered a broken thumb that landed him on IR. This is the first week he was eligible to return, but it was a matter of whether Pierce thought he was ready to go right away or not.

For that, he needed to see him throw the ball and his command of the offense. It was a short week, so he had just two days to get an idea of O’Connell’s readiness. He’s seen enough to make the call to give him the nod.

“He carried himself like a starter.,” Pierce continued.

“You can just look in his eyes, look at his demeanor, it wasn’t a guy like ‘I’m out for the season’, no, it was ‘I’ll be back, I’m ready to be back,’ and he worked his tail off to get back.”

O’Connell won his start at Arrowhead last season on Christmas Day and gets back in time to try and do it again.

Had O’Connell not been ready, Desmond Ridder would have started instead. Ridder will be his backup for the game.

Raiders ‘ramping up’ Aidan O’Connell opening door for potential return Week 13 vs Chiefs

With Gardner Minshew out for the season, the Raiders may have to expedite return of Aidan O’Connell from injured reserve week 13 vs Chiefs.

It’s a hell of a week to have uncertainty at the quarterback position for the Raiders. They will have four days to prepare to face the rival Chiefs at Arrowhead and as of now have their starting QB out for the season and their next best option uncertain if he’ll be healthy enough to go.

“We’ll see if Aidan [O’Connell] is good to go,” head coach Antonio Pierce said Monday. “He’s been ramping up.”

O’Connell has been on injured reserve the past four weeks rehabbing a broken thumb. He will return to practice, opening the window for his return to the active roster, but a lot remains to be seen if he will be ready.

“We’ll just have to see and I’ll have to rely on our doctors and medical staff,” Pierce said. But it’s more than that. Even if he’s cleared medically, he has to pass the eye test

“I know Aidan. I think we all know what it looks like when he’s feeling right and that hand is correct and able for him to perform at a level and help us win a game,” Pierce added.

“So, just seeing him able to grip the ball, comfortable, hopefully no pain there. And just being able to be efficient. Putting a player out there that’s hurting or injured still, that’s not in the benefit of the player or our team.”

Should Pierce or the other coaches feel like O’Connell is not ready, they would turn to Desmond Ridder, who Pierce admitted after the game Sunday night that he hasn’t seen nearly enough from to be confident that he can handle starting duties after just a month with the team.

It’s going to be a late day today for the Raiders as they have to try get a read on O’Connell’s level of readiness and make some kind of decision on who will be starting at quarterback when they head to Kansas City.

Injury update: Raiders send QB Aidan O’Connell to injured reserve with broken thumb

O’Connell’s injury is a broken thumb just as was feared. He is expected to miss 6-7 weeks.

Initial speculation on Aidan O’Connell’s injury during Sunday’s game against the Rams was that he had broken his thumb. That speculation turned out to be true as revealed Monday morning and the team is sending the second year QB to injured reserve.

The expected timeline for O’Connell’s return is set at 4-6 weeks.

O’Connell broke the thumb on the follow-thru of a pass in which his hand hit the hand of an oncoming rusher. To add insult to the injury, the officials didn’t see it and flagged him for intentional grounding.

Gardner Minshew came in the game to replace O’Connell and will be the starter during his absence.

Minshew had been the starter for the first five games of the season until O’Connell was named the starter. This was just his second start this season.

Injury update: Gardner Minshew replaces Aidan O’Connell who leaves with injury

And injury to Aidan O’Connell had him leave the Raiders Week seven game against the Rams, ushering in Gardner Minshew at QB.

In the first quarter of the Raiders vs Rams game, Aidan O’Connell left the game with an injury and headed for the locker room. When the Raiders offense returned to the field, Gardner Minshew was in at quarterback.

Minshew had been the starter for the first five games of this season. O’Connell had replaced Minshew as the Raiders starter in Week six against the Steelers.

O’Connell injured his thumb on a pass in which he was flagged for intentional grounding. He was soon ruled Questionable to return. Antonio Pierce told the broadcast in his sideline interview that he doesn’t think O’Connell will be back today.

Minshew came in and led the Raiders on a scoring drive with Daniel Carlson connecting on a 38-yard field goal to put the Raiders up 3-0.

Update: Preliminary tests suggest O’Connell has a broken thumb, which could mean surgery and would threaten to end his season.
