Texas A&M women’s tennis wins their first NCAA title beating Georgia 4-1

The Aggie women’s tennis team wins its first NCAA title in dominate fashion beating Georgia 4-1

Despite a challenging start to the season, the Aggies demonstrated their resilience in 2024. What initially seemed like a year that might require a return to the drawing board, turned into a triumphant run. They clinched the regular-season SEC title for the third consecutive year, entering the NCAA tournament with a renewed sense of energy.

A common theme throughout Aggie athletics is that you will continue to get the same test with any opportunity to pass it. On Sunday night, A&M passed the test, which was the Georgia Bulldogs.

During the year, the Bulldogs defeated the Aggies in each of the previous three contests, and it seemed destined for them to meet in the championship match. After upsetting multiple teams en route to Sunday, the Maroon and White were on a mission to bring home the gold.

The Aggie took the first point in the doubles match before having to move indoors due to the weather, and once inside, they came out aggressive taking three matches early, but the Bulldogs would battle back to tie it 1-1 before freshman Lucciana Perez put the Aggies up 2-1 in a comeback finish. The final two points came via Mary Stoiana and Nicole Khirin.

The Texas A&M women’s tennis dominates the singles to move on to the Final Four

The Aggies pull off another upset to move on to the Final Four where they will face Tennessee

After losing a point in the doubles matches the No. 13 Texas A&M (26-7) women’s team stormed back to beat No. 5 Virginia 4-1 to move on to the Final Four. Also, for the second meet in a row, the Aggies have upset the higher-ranked team and they have reclaimed their spot as a top-four team in the country.

It was no turning back once the singles matches started with the Aggies swarming all over Virginia after losing earlier in the meet. They had a clean sweep in the first frame and were well on their way to a complete sweep when SEC Freshman of the Year. Lucciana Perez closed out the day with a victory in her match.

Head Coach Mark Weaver went on to talk about the performance in the Elite 8.

“That was a very impressive performance by our group. It was an exciting doubles point that came down to the wire. There was a lot of nerves on both sides. Those doubles points are kind of a roll of the dice and sometimes they can go either way. Excellent composure by the girls to win all six first sets [in singles] and really set the tone there. We brought it, and you could see the confidence growing on our side of the court. It’s a big stage out there and we really handled it well, especially in singles. I’m very proud of our group.”

The Texas A&M women’s tennis team defeats the defending champs earning an Elite 8 bid

Texas A&M returns to the Elite 8 after beating the No. 4 ranked defending champion North Carolina

The Texas A&M women’s tennis team (25-7) had high hopes and lofty expectations leading into the 2024 season. It’s safe to say they hit some of those and came up short in a few others. After coming into the season ranked as the No. 2 team in the country, they suffered a few tough losses that dropped them down all the way to No. 21.

However good teams can’t be kept down long forever. The Aggies battled their way back to win their third consecutive SEC regular season title and a second-place finish in the SEC tournament. Now Coach Mark Weaver has his team in the Elite 8 after knocking off the defending champion No. 4 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels 4-1 in the Sweet 16 round. Coach Weaver gave his thoughts on what this victory meant for the team.

“That is one of the biggest wins, if not the biggest, in Texas A&M history. To come in and beat the defending National Champions on their home courts, who had won 94-consecutive matches [at home] is a truly remarkable achievement for our program. So proud of our group to have now made our third-consecutive Elite 8 appearance.”

“Doubles was key today. I feel like we could have maybe closed it out a little earlier before it got a little interesting toward the end. It really could have gone either way as it played out. Once we got that point under our belt you could see the confidence growing on our side.

We talked after the doubles point was over about really setting the tone early in singles play. For the most part across the board we got some commanding leads in the beginning of the first sets on all the singles courts. It just seemed like the momentum and confidence really started growing there. Even in the two matches where we were down, on courts 3 and 5, we lost the first set and then made some great turns and were in third sets when the match was clinched.” – Mark Weaver

Aggie tennis ace Mary Stoiana is named No.1 in the ITA Rankings

The Texas A&M Tennis star Mary Stoiana adds her name to the record books

History has been made, and a top ranking has been earned by the hard work and relentless effort of Texas A&M women’s tennis star Mary Stoiana.

Stoiana has sealed her name in the Texas A&M record books as the university’s first women’s tennis player to be ranked No. 1 in the nation. The Connecticut native arrived in Bryan-College Station in 2021 and has been on a tear since suiting up in the Maroon & White.

After a stellar freshman campaign where she earned multiple honors, including being named to the All-SEC freshman, she doubled down with an even better sophomore year. Below is just a snip-it of the accolades collected last year as she rose through the rankings:

  • SEC Player of the Year (2023)
  • ITA All-American Singles (2023)
  • All-SEC First Team (2023)
  • 7x SEC Player of the Week in 2023, the most in a single season in conference history

Congratulations to Mary for reaching the top-ranked spot in the nation, and we wish her a very successful upcoming season.
