The Texas A&M men’s golf team punches their ticket to the NCAA Championship

The Texas A&M golf team powered their way to a top three finish to record their third consecutive NCAA Championship birth

It’s almost summertime so you know what that means… Regional golf is in full swing. Texas A&M is headed back to the NCAA Championship after a third-place finish at the Stanford Regional in Palo Alto, CA. This marks their straight NCAA Championship birth after closing out the tournament at 19-under 821.

The start for the Aggies was All-SEC junior Phichaksn Maichon leading the way for the Maroon and White with a second-place finish after posting a -11 overall and a 2-under 68 on the final day. Head Coach Brian Kortan spoke on how challenging the regional was and how well they played

“It’s a really competitive week. The stakes are the highest. The chance to move on and compete for a national championship. It’s a tough week and you can never take it for granted. You look at all the regionals and there are some teams that aren’t going to San Diego (site of the national championship) who clearly had great years, but didn’t have great weeks this week. Our sport has become incredibly competitive. I don’t take it for granted and I know the guys don’t either. They know it’s what they play for – a chance to win the whole thing – but you can’t even talk about it unless you get there. I’m thankful for their effort and their great play and we’ll be ready to compete in San Diego.”

The Aggies will be back in action starting on Friday 24 in Carlsbad, CA for the Division I men’s golf championship

Texas A&M Women’s Golf beats Texas but falls to Wake Forest in Semis

Texas A&M downs the Horns in the quarterfinals before losing to Wake Forest in the semifinals

The Texas A&M Women’s golf team had one of the better seasons in program history over this past year. After winning the SEC championship a month ago, they brought some momentum when heading into the NCAA tournament eventually falling the semis to No. 2 Wake Forest after a strong run.

In the Quarterfinals, the Aggies took on longtime adversary Texas for a chance to advance to the final four. It was in a back-and-forth battle for the majority of the round before Texas A&M was able to pull away late winning 3-1. That victory propelled them into the semis against Wake Forest.

Unfortunately for the Maroon & White, they would fall down early and not be able to catch back up falling 3-0. While winning the NCAA title is the ultimate goal the Women’s golf team had a lot to be proud of this season.

SEC Names Sam Bennett Golfer of the Week

SEC Names Sam Bennett Golfer of the Week

This was probably the most predictable SEC Golfer of the Week honor in years. Sam Bennett had a historic run at the Masters Tournament earning the respect of many seasoned golfers and was the talk of the golf world on social media for days.

The three-time All-American was the only amateur to make the cut after back-to-back opening rounds of 68. He would finish the tournament in 16th place with a 2-under 286 becoming the first amateur to finish in the top 20 since 2005.

Bennett’s Masters Performance as an amateur was one for the ages and joined the ranks of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson as notable Low Amateurs at the event. He gave golf fans around the country something the Aggies already knew; Sam Bennett is a name to keep an eye on for many years to come.

Checkout some photos and highlights from Sam Bennett’s historic week at the Masters Tournament

SEC Names Phichaksn Maichon Golfer of the Week

SEC Names Phichaksn Maichon Golfer of the Week

Texas A&M has been racking up weekly SEC honors across multiple sports and Golf is no exception. With Sam Bennett making some big waves at the Masters, it put a few eyes on the Texas A&M program. Phichaksn Maichon picked a nice week to show he had the goods to earn the honor of Golfer of the Week by the SEC.

Maichon took first place at the Bearkat Invitational where he finished 11-under 205 after three rounds. His five under 67 was good enough for him to beat the runner-up by three strokes.

As I mentioned, SEC honors are a regular thing with the Aggies this year and Maichon added his name to the list that includes Sam Bennett and Daniel Rodrigues as SEC Golfer of the Week recipients.

His next chance to compete for the honor again will be at the Aggie Invitational at Traditions Club.
