AFC East news: Former Bills first-round pick Shaq Lawson was traded

Miami Dolphins traded Shaq Lawson to Houston Texans for Benardrick McKinney.

Not that there ever was a reason to dislike former Bills first-round pick Shaq Lawson, but now there really isn’t. He’s no long with the Fish.

Last offseason, the Bills opted not to re-sign him. Lawson went on to sign with Buffalo’s AFC East rivals, the Dolphins. Now Miami has traded him.

Over the weekend prior to free agency opening, Lawson, 26, was sent to the Houston Texans, per Dolphins Wire.

In exchange for him, the Dolphins landed linebacker Benardrick McKinney, and the deal also included a swap of late-round draft picks.

Lawson was Buffalo’s first-round pick in 2016. In 2020, he notched 32 tackles, four sacks and scored on a fumble recovery in 14 games played with the Dolphins.

McKinney, a linebacker, was a 2015 second-round pick for the Texans. He only played in four games last season and Pro Football Focus graded him a 58.2 overall mark in those combined outings.

AFC East news: Patriots given odds to land Aaron Rodgers

New England Patriots odds for landing QB Aaron Rodgers during the 2021 offseason.

Good news: The Green Bay Packers after very much still the favorite in terms of where quarterback Aaron Rodgers will be playing football in 2021.

But unfortunately an outside chance that he moves on from Green Bay is located in the AFC East… with perhaps the toughest team to consider him playing for: The New England Patriots.

According to Odds Shark, the Patriots have a +950 look at landing Rodgers before next season. As mentioned, the Pack are still the frontrunner, but for reference, here’s a full breakdown of odds in regard to where Rodgers plays in 2021:

  • Packers: -550
  • 49ers: +800
  • Saints: +850
  • Patriots: +950
  • Colts: +1000
  • Steelers: +1200
  • Raiders: +1200

Rodgers recently said on the Pat McAfee Show: “I don’t think that there’s any reason why I wouldn’t be back.”

But who really knows?

Originally Rodgers called his future “uncertain” immediately following his team’s loss to the Bucs in the NFC title game, but at this time, that seems like a comment made out of frustration of losing.

The Patriots being the only AFC East team to make a list of odds to land Rodgers is interesting in itself as well. The Miami Dolphins and New York Jets were the top-two teams in terms of odds for landing Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson when those were initially handed out.

But Rodgers? Not so fast.

With Bill Belichick likely looking for one last run to the Super Bowl without Tom Brady in town, that could be the idea behind the Pats potentially making a run at Rodgers.

The preferred option for the Bills would be not having to face Rodgers in their division… ever.

AFC East offseason: Reports skeptical on Tom Brady returning to Pats

Buffalo Bills’ AFC East rival, the New England Patriots, Tom Brady and latest reports from the NFL combine.

The 2020 NFL Scouting Combine is getting underway this week. There’s little football and much more news that comes about at the yearly event in Indianapolis.

However, not all of the rumblings from Lucas Oil Stadium are surrounding the draft. With Tom Brady’s status in New England in question, his future with the Patriots has started to come back into focus again.

And those reports are telling. There are some reports surfacing that it might actually happen… Brady could be leaving the AFC East.

ESPN NFL Insider Jeff Darlington via Adam Schefter used some head-turning verbiage to describe the amount of doubt he has in Brady, 43, returning to the Patriots.

“I’m now at the point where I would be stunned if Tom Brady went back to New England,” Darlington said.

That was followed up by a report in the Boston Globe. That locally-based outlet in New England’s backyard says “it’s not looking good.”

The Patriots have won 11-straight AFC East titles. While Brady’s play wasn’t great last season, those around him on the Pats’ offense weren’t either. Their successes were carried by head coach Bill Belichick and his defense. While the Patriots still might be the favorite in the division without an aging Brady thanks to the other side of the ball, the gap is certainly closing if Brady leaves in regard to the rest of the divisional field, and that crew is led by the Bills.
