AEW Dynasty card: Swerve Strickland to challenge Samoa Joe for world title

A look at the updated match card for AEW Dynasty 2024.

Revolution was a standout AEW pay-per-view, highlighted by Sting’s retirement match and a thrilling world title bout. It became an unforgettable night of action and arguably the best show that the company ever hosted.

Tony Khan and company now face the challenge of following up on the electrifying show, and it appears they are on track for a promising show.

AEW Dynasty is scheduled for Sunday, April 21 in St. Louis, marking the company’s second pay-per-view of the year. With a card already in progress, this show holds strong potential.

Will Ospreay went to battle with Konosuke Takeshita at Revolution, arguably having the match of the night and one of the best of 2024. They delivered a hard-hitting slugfest that not only showcased Takeshita’s in-ring prowess, but what the Aerial Assassin can do for an American audience that may not have seen him wrestle live.

Ospreay’s next opponent is Bryan Danielson, who issued a challenge after Ospreay’s victory over Kyle Fletcher on Dynamite. Their match, now official for Dynasty, promises a stellar showdown between two top-tier talents, sure to be a wrestling clinic.

Following his victory in a No. 1 contenders match against Konosuke Takeshita, Swerve Strickland will clash with Samoa Joe for the AEW World Championship. It’s Strickland’s second attempt at the title following the three-way match at Revolution, and without Hangman Adam Page in the picture, a one-on-one bout improves the odds of the belt going to Swerve’s house.

Plenty of other matches have also been made to try to entice AEW fans into checking out this inaugural event from St. Louis. Here’s what the full card looks like at the moment.

AEW Dynasty date, start time: When is AEW Dynasty?

See when you’ll want to set aside time to watch AEW Dynasty, a new addition to the AEW PPV schedule.

It’s time for something new this spring in All Elite Wrestling. While fans have grown accustomed to several months passing between Revolution and Double or Nothing, that changes this year with AEW Dynasty.

The addition of a new pay-per-view was telegraphed a bit in advance by AEW CEO, GM and head of creative Tony Khan, who mentioned ahead of Revolution 2024 that perhaps nine PPVs would be the “sweet spot” for the company. Lo and behold, the announcement was made during Revolution that Dynasty would be joining the schedule on April 21, leaving AEW with nine exactly for the year (though a handful have yet to officially be announced).

It remains to be seen how Dynasty might stand out from other events on the AEW slate, though “theming” the shows isn’t really how the company does things. What it does already have is one heck of a centerpiece match, as scintillating newcomer Will Ospreay takes on Bryan Danielson for the first time ever. One would imagine that some of AEW’s other new big name talent could make their way onto this card as well.

St. Louis is also one of the very best wrestling towns in the U.S., so expect to see a live crowd for this inaugural event. Here’s when you’ll need to tune in on PPV for AEW Dynasty in April.

AEW Dynasty, new AEW PPV, announced for April 21 in St. Louis

Already rumored to be happening in April, the inaugural AEW Dynasty is indeed on the way next month in St. Louis.

The space between AEW Revolution and AEW Double or Nothing has always been devoid of pay-per-view cards, but that’s about to change.

As revealed during Revolution on Sunday night, a new event called AEW Dynasty is set to debut on Sunday, April 21. The PPV will take place at Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis, with tickets going on sale this Friday, March 8.

AEW has yet to run a PPV in the month of April, avoiding any direct confrontation with WWE’s biggest show of each year, WrestleMania. However, the inaugural Dynasty is two weeks after WrestleMania 40, moving it clear of any kind of an April showdown.

Dynasty isn’t much of a surprise as it is a confirmation of earlier reports and hints. AEW CEO, GM and head of creative Tony Khan said during his media call leading up to Revolution that the sweet spot for AEW PPVs was probably nine a year, which would mean adding one to the eight held in 2023.

That came on the heels of Fightful Select (subscription required) reporting that AEW had filed a trademark claim for the Dynasty name, and that it was expected to be used for an April event.

AEW hasn’t officially announced any more PPVs for the rest of 2024 except for All In, which will take place Aug. 25 at London’s Wembley Stadium. However, all of the other big shows from the 2023 calendar are expected to return, and in the same months they ran last year.

If that indeed turns out to be the case, it would mean January, February and July would be the only months this year without an AEW pay-per-view card. That feels right, but it remains to be seen if Khan and his team will think the same way moving into 2025 and beyond.
