Colts’ Adetomiwa Adebawore one of the ‘most improved’ DTs on team

Colts’ DC Gus Bradley called Adetomiwa Adebawore one of the most improved DTs on the team, and we saw that jump in the fist preseason game.

Colts’ defensive tackle Adetomiwa Adebawore appears to be making a big jump in his second NFL season.

“He’s probably, if you look at the D-line group, we’ve had conversations that he’s probably one of the most improved,” said defensive coordinator Gus Bradley on Tuesday.

In the Colts’ first preseason game against Denver, Adetomiwa had plenty of opportunities while the defensive front was a bit short-handed without DeForest Buckner or Raekwon Davis. Adebawore would play 44 snaps in total, with 25 coming against the pass, and was able to record four pressures, including three quarterback hits.

In fact, among all interior defenders who played at least eight preseason snaps in Week 1, Adebawore ranked 22nd in PFF’s pass rush win rate metric.

An elite athlete, Adebawore’s ability to get after the quarterback is where he’s at his best, often winning with speed. But during Sunday’s contest, we saw a pass rusher also winning with power, and making an impact in the run game.

Adebawore finished the game with two tackles, and recorded on run-stop. Again, out of the 100-plus eligible interior defenders, Adebawore ranked 33rd in PFF’s run defense grading system.

Oftentimes it is in a player’s second season that we see the biggest developmental leap take place. There are many reasons for this, including the comfortability with the speed of the NFL level, the continuity of being in the same system for a second season, and having a full offseason to focus on their craft, rather than the pre-draft process.

“From where he was–you see that sometime in second-year players, where they get a better feel,” added Bradley. “Their offseason they may change a few things here and there, realizing after going through a season what they need to work on.

“But give credit to himself–he’s done a great job. And then the D-line coaching staff has really worked with him too. It’s been good. He’s been more consistent versus the run and the pass. So we’re pleased with where he’s at right now.”

At the top of the Colts’ defensive tackle rotation will be Buckner, Grover Stewart, and Raekwon Davis. However, that fourth spot, which comes with playing time, is up for grabs. This appears to be a two-man race between Adebawore and Taven Bryan.

Both players have shown the ability to get after the quarterback, so the ability to hold up as a run defender consistently may be a determining factor in who wins that role.

“Tomi, he coming along, man,” said Stewart. “He getting all his technique down and he just working on the little stuff.”

Colts’ training camp roster preview: DT Adetomiwa Adebawore

Up next in our Colts’ training camp roster preview is second-year defensive tackle Adetomiwa Adebawore.

Veterans and rookies for the Indianapolis Colts will report for training camp on July 24th, with the first practice taking place on July 25th.

Between now and then I will be previewing the Colts’ 91-man roster with a look back at each player’s 2023 season, along with what’s ahead for 2024.

I’ll be going through the Colts’ roster alphabetically, so up next is defensive tackle Adetomiwa Adebawore.

2023 Season review

Adebawore was a fourth-round pick by the Colts in the 2023 draft and saw minimal playing time as a rookie. Even with inconsistent play from Taven Bryan and Eric Johnson, Adebawore saw just 132 defensive snaps.

Adebawore would make the most of his pass-rush opportunities, however, with his athleticism and high motor on display as he totaled six pressures and two sacks in only 71 pass rush reps, ranking 31st among all defensive tackles in PFF’s pass-rush productivity metric. Run defense will have to be an area where he continues to improve. Adebawore also did the dirty work as a rookie, playing 74 special teams snaps, most of which came on the kick coverage and punt return units.

“I think with Tomi it was never a question about his ability to rush,” defensive coordinator Gus Bradley said. “I think that was his strong suit. When we looked at him we thought, ‘Shoot, he’s strong, has the ability to rush. Maybe he can give us some inside pressure.’

“The question for Tomi was how about the run game? When teams double team him or good zone schemes, how is he going to be there? I think early in the season sometimes you scratch your head and it didn’t look like it should look. But to his credit, I think the more and more he plays you’re seeing more strain from him. That’s what we need. It might not be where he splits the double team and makes a play, but you do see strain and you do see him maintaining the line of scrimmage more consistently than he did at the beginning of the season. So credit him for that.”

2024 Season preview

With DeForest Buckner, Grover Stewart, and Raekwon Davis, the front end of the Colts’ defensive tackle rotation is solidified. However, the fourth spot on the depth chart will be up for grabs with Adebawore, Bryan, and Johnson competing for it. I would anticipate that the hope is that Adebawore can secure this role as a recent draft pick and someone who comes with a higher ceiling than Bryan and Johnson.

“He’s got really unique traits for the position,” GM Chris Ballard said after drafting him.

With that said, while this is a heavily rotated position group, playing time could still be difficult to come by this season for Adebawore – or whoever the fourth defensive tackle is – with defensive ends Dayo Odeyingbo and Tyquan Lewis able to line up inside as well.

Pre-draft scouting: What scouts said about Colts DT Adetomiwa Adebawore

Here’s what the scouting reports said about Colts DT Adetomiwa Adebawore.

The Indianapolis Colts added more depth and upside to the defensive line during the fourth round of the 2023 NFL draft when they selected Adetomiwa Adebawore out of Northwestern.

The No. 110 overall pick, which the Colts acquired in a draft-day trade, Adebawore spent most of his college career as an edge rusher. However, the Colts see him best as a three-technique to work behind starter DeForest Buckner.

Here’s what the draft analysts had to say about Adebawore before the Colts made the pick at No. 110 overall:

The Indianapolis Colts signed defensive tackle Adetomiwa Adebawore to a four-year rookie deal, the team announced Wednesday.

A fourth-round pick (No. 110 overall) in the 2023 NFL draft, Adebawore was considered a steal by many analysts following the draft. Some pundits had him going as early as the second round.

The contract is worth $4.36 million and includes a signing bonus of $796,000, according to Mike Chappell of Fox59.

Though Adebawore spent most of his time at Northwestern working off the edge, it’s likely he will spend the majority of his reps at the three-technique position behind DeForest Buckner and free-agent signee Taven Bryan.

Adebawore is the ninth rookie to sign his deal. There are three left to do so; first-rounder Anthony Richardson, second-rounder Julius Brents and fourth-rounder Blake Freeland.

PFF calls Adetomiwa Adebawore biggest steal in Round 4

PFF had high praise for the selection of Adetomiwa Adebawore.

Ever since he fell past his projected draft capital, eventually to be scooped up by the Indianapolis Colts in the fourth round, defensive tackle Adetomiwa Adebawore has been dubbed one of the biggest values of the 2023 NFL draft.

That continued in the eyes of Pro Football Focus, who labeled one prospect as the biggest steal in each round of the draft. For Round 4, it was none other than the elite athlete with royal bloodlines.

Pick: 110
PFF Big Board: 56

Adebawore was always going to have an interesting landing spot. Due to his unique build as a trench player, his range was anywhere from the late first to the early part of Day 3. It ended up being the latter, but to us, that makes him a draft steal.

The versatile Northwestern defensive lineman was 56th on PFF’s final big board. He has an interesting build for a trench player, measuring in at 6-foot-1 5/8 and 282 pounds. He’s small in height compared to NFL edge rushers, and he’s undersized compared to NFL interior defenders. His unique 33 7/8-inch wingspan at that height makes it tempting to still let him rush from the edge — which might be his best spot. But his height and length combination also presents an opportunity for him to find leverage on the interior.

What’s not a question is his athleticism. With a 97th percentile 40-yard dash, 88th percentile vertical and 90th percentile broad (and that’s compared to edge rushers — he ranked in the 99th percentile across the board versus interior defenders) — Adebawore is an explosive player on the line of scrimmage. It will take some creativity to make him a high-impact player, but the mold is there.

The most likely explanation for Adebawore’s fall is due to the fact that he’s a bit of a tweener between an edge rusher and an interior defensive lineman. However, the Colts have made it clear he will be working mostly from the three-technique defensive tackle position behind DeForest Buckner and alongside Taven Bryan.

Adebawore is still plenty raw as a pass rusher when it comes to developing counters and an overall plan when getting after the quarterback. But his elite athleticism should allow him to carve out some type of role in Gus Bradley’s attacking front.

Adebawore was projected to go somewhere between the second and third rounds of the draft so there’s a good chance he winds up becoming one of the biggest values of the entire class for the Colts.
