Chiefs activate WR Skyy Moore, place DL Charles Omenihu on injured reserve

The #Chiefs activated Skyy Moore and placed Charles Omenihu on injured reserve ahead of their Super Bowl LVIII matchup against the #49ers.

The Kansas City Chiefs made two key roster moves on Wednesday night ahead of their February 11 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Second-year wide receiver Skyy Moore was activated for the Chiefs’ championship bout with the 49ers, and veteran defensive lineman Charles Omenihu was placed on injured reserve after injuring his knee against the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game.

Moore was a contributor in Kansas City’s Super Bowl LVII win over the Philadelphia Eagles and could play a role in Andy Reid’s game plan against San Francisco on Sunday.

Omenihu joined the Chiefs as a free agent in the 2023 offseason and was among Kansas City’s most productive pass rushers after missing the team’s first six games due to a suspension.

Expect both of these moves to play a factor in the Chiefs’ approach to Super Bowl LVIII on both sides of the ball.

Defensive back Tavierre Thomas describes close relationship with head coach Lovie Smith

Thomas’ involvement with Lovie Smith could be a boon for the defensive back’s development within the #Texans’ defense

Defensive back Tavierre Thomas was activated from the Houston Texans’ injured reserve list last week after missing time since early September due to a quadriceps injury. His return is a welcome development for the team’s defense as they look to improve over the coming weeks, and especially given their difficult matchup against the New York Giants on Sunday.

Thomas was among the Texans who spoke to reporters after practice on Tuesday and made it clear that he was excited to be back on the field.

“It felt great,” He said of his return to practice. “I was happy to be back out there trying to help us get a win. Now I’ll be back on defense a lot more. Hopefully I light a spark and everyone gets behind me and just go win.”

He continued his comments on the subject when asked about the relationship that he has developed with head coach Lovie Smith, which he described in detail as a key part of his motivation to play his hard-nosed style of football at the cornerback position.

“Me and Lovie [Smith] are really close,” Thomas explained. “We talk every day, all day. He teaches me stuff during football and outside of football with my family. I just listen to him, read my keys and play as hard as I can because if you play hard for Lovie, he’s going to do a lot for you. That’s the goal with me.”

It certainly can’t hurt his prospects of becoming an impact player on Houston’s defense for him to be so attached to Smith, who has his fingerprints all over everything that the Texans do on that side of the ball. With time to acclimate into Smith’s system and a gradual increase in playing time, Thomas seems primed to become one of the players that the team relies on the most for the edge they need to compete against top-level talent through the rest of their 2022 schedule.

Cowboys activate Leighton Vander Esch ahead of MNF, Prescott to IR

The Wolf Hunter is back.

The Dallas Cowboys have finally made the moves many have anticipated, waiting until the proverbial last minute to shuffle their roster ahead of their Week 6 tilt on Monday Night Football.

Linebacker Leighton Vander Esch will play for the first time since leaving Week 1 with a broken collarbone, just in time to help direct a defense charged with stopping the Arizona Cardinals’ dual-threat QB Kyler Murray. Vander Esch returning to the middle could mean more of a spy role for chase-and-pursuit linebacker Jaylon Smith, hopefully giving Dallas a chance to matchup against the dynamic threat.

In a corresponding move, Dallas has sent their own starting quarterback Dak Prescott to injured reserve. His compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle is season ending, and the team will start Andy Dalton for the first time on Monday night. In other moves, Dallas promoted DT Justin Hamilton to replace Trysten Hill (ACL), also lost for the year in Week 5’s win over the New York Giants.

Vander Esch was a Pro Bowler in 2018 as a rookie, but struggled with a neck injury throughout 2019, only suiting up for nine games and missing parts of those. The collarbone break wasn’t related, but it was just five weeks ago, leading many to wonder just how healed the player is.

Dallas’ defense can certainly use him, though, as they are on a record pace to shatter the worst-ever volume stats in several franchise categories.

That didn’t take long. As expected, the Dallas Cowboys’ move to bring in veteran defensive back Brandon Carr was done with the mindset of speedy dividends. Despite missing all offseason and not being part of any team’s training camp, Carr’s intelligence and athleticism led many to think it wouldn’t be long before he would be helping the Cowboys on the field in a regular season game.

Some even saw it happening as early as Week 1. Well, those people were proven right on Saturday, as it was announced the club will use the new promotion rules of the CBA to bring Carr up to the regular season roster from the practice squad.

Carr is expected to primarily play a safety role for Mike Nolan’s defense. He played both corner and safety the last two years for the Baltimore Ravens.

NFL clubs are allowed to promote two members of their 16-man practice squad to the active/inactive roster each week, bringing the total number of available players up to 55. Thanks to changes to the rules, teams no longer have to release a player (or send them to IR) in order to accomodate the promotions; players simply revert to the practice squad following the game.

There are other rules associated with how often teams can do this, but the big takeaway is that when whittling down to their 46-man gameday roster on Sunday, Carr is eligible to be in that group, and the expectation is he will see action in the tilt against the Los Angeles Rams.

The 13-year veteran has started in 192 consecutive games, including 80 out of 80 during his five years in Dallas during his previous stint. The streak now has a legitimate chance of stretching at least one game more.
