Seahawks RB Rashaad Penny takes important step in ACL recovery

Seattle Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny tweeted he rode an exercise bike on Tuesday, a sign his recovery from ACL surgery is going well.

Seattle Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny suffered a serious knee injury late in the 2019 season, which required surgery not just for a torn ACL, but included additional cleanup as well.

At the time of the surgery, Pete Carroll was reserved about Penny’s recovery timeline, a bad sign from the almost always optimistic coach.

“It was a legit surgery that’s going to call for the full length of time,” Carroll said in early January. “It’s a little bit less predictable with his recovery than it would be for Chris [Carson, who had hip surgery around the same time].”

Of course, Penny still has nearly seven months until Seattle’s 2020 season opener, which gives him enough time to make a full recovery – although it will be close.

The 24-year-old running back took a big first step on Tuesday, reporting on Twitter that he rode on a bike for the first time since his injury.

Penny still has a long way to go to get healthy for 2020, and seems very likely to miss part or all of training camp and the preseason – which will make it tough for him to be ready to play meaningful snaps by Week 1.

Rashaad Penny’s ACL surgery required additional clean up

Seattle Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny’s ACL surgery required additional work, making his recovery time less predictable than before.

While the Seattle Seahawks received encouraging news about star running back Chris Carson, who does not need surgery on his hip, the news wasn’t quite as positive on fellow running back Rashaad Penny.

Penny suffered a torn ACL in Week 14 against the Rams, and coach Pete Carroll revealed that the surgery to repair the ACL required additional work as well.

“There was some stuff, yeah,” Carroll said on Wednesday. “There were some other things that they had to clean up and all that. It was more than just a simple ACL surgery, if it ever is simple.”

However, Penny is expected to make it back in time for the 2020 NFL season, but there’s a distinct possibility he misses most, if not all, of training camp and or the preseason.

“All the expectations are that he’ll make it back,” Carroll continued. “It was a legit surgery that’s going to call for the full length of time and it’s a little bit less predictable with his recovery than it would be for Chris.”

Penny emerged as a high-quality No. 2 running back this year, rushing 65 times for 370 yards and three touchdowns while also hauling in eight receptions for 83 yards and another score.

He will once again reprise his role as Carson’s backup next season, provided he is healthy. However, the recent emergence of Travis Homer could challenge Penny for carries, particularly if his health impacts his ability to be 100 percent ready for the start of the next campaign.

Seahawks officially activate Ethan Pocic back from injured reserve

The Seattle Seahawks have officially activated offensive lineman Ethan Pocic back from injured reserve and placed Rashaad Penny on the IR.

The Seattle Seahawks officially activated offensive lineman Ethan Pocic back to the roster from the injured reserve. Pocic, who was placed on IR Week 6 with a back injury, became eligible to return after missing the requisite next eight games of the regular season.

“He and Joey [Hunt] could both play center, which was really a bonus to us, as well as Ethan has played both guard spots, and he could play tackle if he needed to in an emergency,” coach Pete Carroll said after Friday’s practice. “His versatility has always been a great strength, all the way back to when he had done all of that in college as well. That was always the positive that he brought that was unique for him.”

The roster move was expected as Pocic had returned to practice following the team’s win over Minnesota. Pocic has appeared in just two regular-season games this year.

To make room for Pocic on the 53-man squad, running back Rashaad Penny was placed on the injured reserve. Expected to undergo ACL surgery in the near future, Penny’s season is now officially over.

Rashaad Penny’s timeline for return uncertain after ACL surgery

Seattle Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny will undergo ACL surgery and might not be available at the start of the 2020 season.

Seattle Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny suffered a season-ending knee injury Week 14 against the Los Angeles Rams.

Initial testing revealed a “significant” ACL sprain, however, the MRI results confirmed the worst – Penny has an ACL tear, at the least.

“There’s some other stuff that they’ll look at when they get in there,” coach Pete Carroll told reporters Wednesday. “They are going to do surgery. He will have surgery. He’s not going in immediately. They’re going to let it quiet down before they do that. It’s a long haul before we get him back. We’re going to take all the right precautions to make sure we start the process at the right time.

“They got to get in there and find out what’s going on, but it’s an ACL damage mainly that they’re concerned with.”

Carroll was asked whether or not Penny could be unavailable at the start of next season.

“No, I would never say that right now,” Carroll said. “I don’t know how many months we got. It’s going to take him a while.”

With Penny out, Seattle will rely on C.J. Prosise and Travis Homer to assist starter Chris Carson in the run game. The Seahawks will square off against the Panthers in their final road game of the season this Sunday.
