Five plays that loomed large in Notre Dame’s win over Georgia Tech

Lots of good plays today for the Irish

That was fun wasn’t it? The Irish came out and took early control of this game, putting it out the Yellow Jackets out of their misery early. An absolutely dominant performance across the board with a 55-0 victory was exactly how the Irish wanted to finish the home portion of the schedule. Since this game wasn’t overtly close, there weren’t too many plays that impacted the game but here are five that still stood out.

5 Stars: The best and worst of Notre Dame’s win over Georgia Tech

Not much to complain about today

This one was over at the half, the Irish jumped all over the Yellow Jackets, 45-0 at the half. It was all good for Notre Dame, so there wasn’t too much to complain about. The majority of this article is going to be good, there was just one aspect of the game that I will complain about but it’s not that terrible. Here are the best, 5 stars, and worst, 1 star, performances for Notre Dame against Georgia Tech.

Watch: Big man touchdown, Notre Dame’s Tagovailoa-Amosa scoop and score

That’s two scores for the Irish defense

The Irish defense already had one scoring play in the first half, when linebacker Jack Kiser scored on a pick-6 for the first touchdown of the game. The Notre Dame defense was not done.

Defensive end Isaiah Foskey has been an absolute terror for the Yellow Jacket offensive line, his pressure resulted in Kiser getting that pick-6. Foskey did it again in the second half as the got a sack/fumble on GT quarterback Jordan Yates and his fellow defensive lineman, Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa scooped up the fumble and raced down the field for a big man touchdown. That score extended the lead to 55-0 for the Irish and kept the shutout intact.

Now Williams has two scores also

The Irish have an opportunity to score fifty points before the half. Why well it’s because the offense has been flowing and the defense has held the Georgia Tech offense to just 80-yards with just under 1:30 seconds left in the first half.

The one of the reasons why the Irish might score a fifty-burger is running back Kyren Williams. The dynamic third-year player once again is showing why he is one of the best ‘backs in the country. Williams found the end zone for the second time this game, a short one, just a yard but it still pushed the Irish lead to 45-0 with under two minutes left to go in the half.

Watch: Notre Dame RB Diggs find the end zone through the air vs GT

Diggs finds the end zone again

You have to give Irish offensive coordinator Tommy Rees a whole lot of credit the last few weeks. Yes, the offense looked fantastic in the season opener against Florida State but they had all off-season to prepare. When you’ re in-season, it’s just different, the time to prepare is much shorter.

One of the biggest reason’s we have seen the offense evolve is due to Rees opting to play two running backs and using plenty of misdirection. This time it was freshman running back Logan Diggs, his second score of the game, on a beautifully called screen play and execution by quarterback Jack Coan, that pushed the Irish lead to 38-0 over Georgia Tech.

Diggs this time for the Irish

The question now is who will score a touchdown next for the Irish. First it was the defense and linebacker Jack Kiser with a pick-6. Then running back Kyren Williams had his turn to find pay-dirt. Tight end Michael Mayer was after, with the longest touchdown score of the day so far, a 52-yard passing play from quarterback Jack Coan.

If you had running back Logan Diggs on your bingo score card, then you’re looking pretty good. The freshman running back has really exploded on the scene and has made his mark. Once again Diggs got into the game early and made his presence felt, with a 5-yard touchdown run to extend the Irish lead to 31-0 over the Yellow Jackets.

Mayer for six

The rout is on. With the Irish already holding onto a sizable 17-0 lead, Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly and offensive coordinator Tommy Rees were not afraid to call a passing play.

This specific one was for four verticals, if you play Madden, you know this play. Quarterback Jack Coan read the safety perfectly, saw a streaking tight end, Michael Mayer, and made a great throw in-stride to the sophomore tight end. It was then all up to Mayer, as he ran untouched into the end zone for a massive play, that covered 52-yards and pushed the Notre Dame lead to 24-0 late in the first quarter.

Kyren Williams with yet another touchdown

The Irish offense needed to answer as the defense had already put points on the board. They answered with a very nice drive, one that spanned 9-plays, covered 65-yards and resulted in a score.

The biggest play of the drive wasn’t a huge play, but one that saw the Irish facing a 3rd-and-5, quarterback Jack Coan finding tight end Michael Mayer for a 16-yard gain. That would keep the drive alive, along with a 4th down conversion which set up running back Kyren Williams. He would take a hand-off to the left side and sprint to the end zone to push the Notre Dame lead to 17-0 over Georgia Tech.

Watch: Notre Dame LB Kiser with a pick-6 against Georgia Tech

That’s two pick-6’s for Kiser on the year

The Irish offense had a great opportunity on their first drive to get points which they did, on a Jonathan Doerer 41-yard field goal. That meant that the first touchdown was still out there and the Notre Dame defense came out on the field.

The Georgia Tech offense had just entered Notre Dame territory and their first play did not end well for them. Defensive end Isaiah Foskey come storming into the backfield, hit Yellow Jacket quarterback Jordan Yates as he was throwing and linebacker Jack Kiser was in the right place at the right time. The sophomore, picked off the pass and took it to the house for a touchdown and extending the Irish lead to 10-0 at home against Georgia Tech.
