When the ACC announced their restructured football schedule for 2020 one of the interesting parts that went a bit less noticed than say, Notre Dame joining a conference for football, was that the date of the ACC Championship Game wasn’t set in stone.

Originally listed as “either December 12 or 19”, the game which will be played at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte.

It’s now officially set for Saturday, Dec. 19 per an ACC release.

This isn’t really a surprise whatsoever with the amount of postponements and rescheduling the conference has already gone through.

Notre Dame for instance will be playing at Wake Forest on December 12 at Wake Forest in a game that was originally set for September.

Here’s to hoping that will be the first of two consecutive weekends the Irish spend in North Carolina.

Notre Dame and the ACC: Who’s Dependent on Who?

A new piece from Irish Breakdown makes the argument that the ACC needs the Irish more than the other way around.

A new piece from Irish Breakdown makes the argument that the ACC needs Notre Dame more than the other way around. The issue of the Irish’s independence arose again over the past week with the Big Ten and Pac-12 announcing conference-only schedules for 2020. But the aforementioned piece showed why that independence likely won’t be going away anytime soon, and it has everything to do with where the ACC is.

The ACC and Pac-12 both pulled in $29.5 million for each school last season, but those figures were behind the three other Power Five conferences. And in spite of Clemson’s dominance, it typically drew fewer TV viewers than Notre Dame did. What’s more, the ACC title game had its lowest ratings ever, and it was the fifth straight year that viewership for the game fell.

Notre Dame isn’t struggling for relevance, and a TV deal other schools only can dream of helps ensure that. So why do the Irish need to do something to appease the mass of critics? They’re only jealous. Right?

Steph Curry 12-1 favorite in American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament

In Steph Curry’s eighth appearance in the ACC celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, the Golden State Warriors guard is a 12-1 favorite.

Over the weekend, Stephen Curry is set to compete in the American Century Championship golf tournament. After finishing seventh with a score of 50 in the 2019 edition of the match, the Golden State Warriors point guard is coming off as a 12-1 favorite, according to William Hill Sports Book.

After winning the last two tournaments, former Dallas Cowboys’ signal-caller Tony Romo leads the board with even odds at Edgewood Resort in South Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

Curry will compete with former big-league hurlers Mark Mulder, Derek Lowe and John Smoltz. Although Case Keenum has more considerable odds than Curry in 2020 at 30-1, the NFL quarterback finished one spot above Golden State’s two-time MVP in 2019.

A star-studded cast will join Curry on the course in Lake Tahoe. Along with boxer Canelo Alvarez, Pro Bowlers Aaron Rodgers, Larry Fitzgerald, Adam Theilen, Patrick Peterson and Cooper Kupp, Super Bowl champion and 2019 NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes will make his ACC Tournament debut.

Adding to the top-flight field, Bay Area champions Jerry Rice and Steve Young will compete against Curry in the tournament.

According to Darren Rovell of the Action Network, the Warriors six-time All-Star will link up with his father Dell and Rodgers for the first round of the competition on Thursday.

ACC Championship to be decided by match play beginning this spring

The ACC has decided to incorporate match play into its men’s and women’s league championships beginning this spring.

A decade after match play debuted in the 2009 NCAA Championship, the format continues to spread into conference championships. The ACC has decided to incorporate match play into its league championship beginning this spring.

The format change was approved last year and goes into effect for both the men’s and women’s ACC Championships in 2020. The championship will now feature 54 holes of stroke play before a cut to the top four teams, who move on to match play.

The men’s championship will be played April 17-20 at Old North State Club in New London, North Carolina. The women’s championship will take place April 22-26 at the Reserve Golf Club in Pawley’s Island, South Carolina.

Interestingly, last year’s NCAA Women’s Championship (the fifth decided by match play) featured an all-ACC final between Duke and Wake Forest. Duke ultimately won, claiming its seventh program championship but its first in the match-play era.

Wake Forest had won the conference title a month earlier.

“I’m excited about the format of ACC being match play,” Wake Forest women’s head coach Kim Lewellen said. “Not only do I think it is great practice for our NCAA Championship, for both players and coaches, but provides a phenomenal experience for spectators.”

North Carolina men’s head coach Andrew DiBitetto had similar thoughts on the upcoming conference format change, particularly in terms of the postseason preparation it might offer.

“I think this is an exciting change for our ACC Championship,” he said. “Bringing match play to the event allows us to better align with how our national champion is crowned. Also, cuts in college golf are rare. For the most part, we only see them at regionals and at the national championship.

“I believe both elements, the match play and the cut, gives the student-athletes in our conference the opportunity to be better prepared for NCAAs. When you combine the new format with an ACC that is extremely talented and deep in men’s golf, I think we are getting ready to create a highly competitive, intense and pressure-packed championship.”

The ACC joins a short but distinguished list of conferences that have changed to a match-play format in the recent past. On the men’s side, the Sun Belt Conference, Conference USA and the SEC use the format while only the SEC determines its winner by match play on the women’s side.

On the men’s side at least, the ACC Championship has landed some prestigious venues for the next four years, including Capital City Club (Crabapple Course) in Atlanta, Georgia for 2021; The Clubs by Joe (Shark’s Tooth Course) in Panama City, Florida in 2022; The Country Club of North Carolina (Dogwood Course) in Pinehurst, North Carolina in 2023 and Charlotte Country Club in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2024.

Notre Dame Opponent ACC Championship Bound After Thriller

This battle between two 2019 Notre Dame opponents was an exciting one and by no-way an easy victory for the Cavaliers who jumped out to an early two-possession lead before the lead bounced back and forth.

The story of the year in the ACC has been the gap between Clemson, who hasn’t lost a conference game since mid-October of 2017 and the rest of the conference who at times this year hasn’t had a second ranked team in the Amway Coaches Poll Powered by USA Today, AP Poll or the College Football Playoff committee rankings.

When No. 3 Clemson travels to Charlotte for the ACC Championship Game next week they’ll be playing 9-3 Virginia after the Cavaliers finally got by rival Virginia Tech and won the Commonwealth Cup for the first time since 2003.

That’s because Notre Dame’s September 28 opponent, who the Irish got by after a dominating defensive second half, won a thriller in Charlottesville, Virginia.

This battle between two 2019 Notre Dame opponents was an exciting one and by no-way an easy victory for the Cavaliers who jumped out to an early two-possession lead before the lead bounced back and forth.

A late Virginia field goal gave them a 33-30 lead with under two minutes left before a defensive score with under a minute left put them up 39-30.

Virginia’s win and Coastal Division title means all seven ACC Coastal teams have won the division in the last seven years.

This was the fourth straight season that Notre Dame played the eventual ACC Coastal Division champion, winning the last two of those match-ups (Pittsburgh 2018, Virginia Tech 2019). It’s the sixth time in six years since starting their ACC deal that Notre Dame has played a team that wound up in the ACC Championship Game:

2014 Florida State

2015 Clemson

2016 Virginia Tech

2017 Miami

2018 Pittsburgh

2019 Virginia

Since starting their deal with the ACC to play four games annually in 2014 and it being bumped up to five a year later, Notre Dame has gone 23-7 vs. ACC foes in regular season play, including winning 14 of their last 15 regular season games against ACC opponents.

It should be noted that the only time Notre Dame played Clemson in that time was in the Cotton Bowl, a 30-3 blowout win for the Tigers last December.

Notre Dame will play ACC foes Wake Forest, Pitt, Clemson, Duke and Georgia Tech in 2020.
