Re-visiting UNC’s season-ending loss to UVA in ACC Tournament

UVA proved to be the final dagger in UNC’s basketball season last year. The Tar Heels can avenge that loss on Saturday afternoon.

Throughout much of last year, the UNC men’s basketball team was on NCAA Tournament Bubble Watch.

A run to the 2022 NCAA Championship Game had North Carolina ranked as the Preseason Number One team, an expectation never lived up to. The Tar Heels brought in Pete Nance to try and replace Brady Manek’s production, but he also didn’t play up to his incoming hype.

A disappointing regular-season forced UNC to, essentially, win the ACC Tournament for a shot at the big dance. North Carolina handled Boston College with ease in the second round, but ran into Virginia in the quarterfinals.

UVA controlled UNC in a defensive battle, winning 68-59 and sending the Heels packing.

North Carolina has a golden change to avenge this loss, playing the Cavaliers on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 4 p.m. ET in Charlottesville, but let’s re-visit the 2023 heart-breaker first.

This game wasn’t all Cavaliers, contrary to what the final score might show. North Carolina trailed by just a point at halftime, exactly the kind of position it needed to be in against a slow, methodical UVA squad.

The second half wasn’t pretty, as the Tar Heels finished the game shooting a hair under 36 percent. RJ Davis carried the UNC offense with 24 points on eight made shots and four free throws, but Caleb Love shot a horrendous 3-of-15 from the field and Armando Bacot slugged through 21 minutes on a bad ankle.

UVA rode a balanced scoring attack led by Jayden Gardner (17 points), Reece Beekman (15) and Armaan Franklin (14). The Cavaliers ultimately decided this game in points off turnovers, earning a 14-2 advantage over North Carolina in this department.

The Tar Heels are in a much better position this year, owning a tiebreaker with Duke atop the ACC. If UNC scores early and often against UVA, which is coming off its worst loss of the season, it’ll be able to control the tempo and win this crucial matchup.

2024 ACC Tournament: Latest seeding for week of Feb. 19

Here is the updated bracket for the 2024 ACC Basketball Tournament for the week of February 19th.

There is just under a month left in the 2023-24 college basketball regular season as teams start to make their pushes to the end. In the Atlantic Coast Conference, it’s a two-team race at the top right now with Duke entering the week a half game behind North Carolina for the top spot.

Virginia trails by 1 1/2 games going into a Saturday showdown with the Tar Heels but a loss in that game would really hurt the Hokies’ chances. As we inch closer toward Washington D.C. for the annual conference tournament starting on March 12, the seeding will start to play itself out.

With another week of jam-packed action in the conference, here is how things look in terms of matchups and seeding for the tournament.

2023 ACC Tournament seeding, schedule, info and more

Here is the bracket for the 2023 ACC Tournament as it gets underway in Greensboro next week.

The 2022-23 college basketball regular season is officially over for the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Miami and Virginia will share the regular season title after both teams won their respective games on Saturday. The Hurricanes took care of Pitt at home while Virginia beat Louisville in Charlottesville.

Joining those two teams in the top four with a double bye will be Clemson and Duke. The Tigers beat Notre Dame to secure their spot while Duke swept the season series against North Carolina.

Speaking of the Tar Heels.

The ACC Tournament is arguably most important for Hubert Davis’ team as they have fallen off the bubble even more with the loss to Duke. It’s very likely UNC will have to win the tournament to get in with MAYBE a close loss in the championship game also receiving a possible bid?

This year feels more wide open than ever before. So with the regular season over, let’s look at the schedule for the week ahead in Greensboro.

UNC women to play Thursday in ACC Tournament

North Carolina women’s basketball team is scheduled to play Thursday in the ACC Tournament.

The North Carolina women’s basketball program will be in action Thursday as they compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.

UNC finished the regular season with a 20-9 overall record. Seven of those nine losses came in ACC, where they finished with an 11-7 record.

North Carolina enters the ACC tournament as the seventh seed. Despite a low seeding, it is more telling about how strong the conference is than UNC plays this season. UNC not only beat the top seed in the tournament Notre Dame, but they also swept the third seed Duke Blue Devils.

North Carolina did get a high enough seed that they do not have to play on Wednesday, as they await the winner of Clemson/Pitt.

North Carolina will be at full strength heading into the postseason with star player Alyssa Utsby returning into the lineup. Utsby led the Tar Heels in rebounds this season, averaging 8.7 rebounds. In addition, star guard Deja Kelly led the team in points averaging 16.5 this season.
