Dennis Allen says Saints have no timeline for Tyrann Mathieu’s return

Dennis Allen says Saints have no timeline for Tyrann Mathieu’s return to training camp from his excused absence:

We’re four days into New Orleans Saints training camp, but there hasn’t been any sign of Tyrann Mathieu. The team’s biggest free agent addition has missed the start of camp with an excused absence while he attends to a personal family matter.

And Saints head coach Dennis Allen said Saturday that there’s, “No update,” on Mathieu’s status while he remains away from the team, declining to specify what’s kept him or how much longer he’ll be out of action. The team is off on Sunday and will regroup for their first padded practice on Monday, so that’s the next date we’ll be looking out for Mathieu’s return.

Let’s hope all is well on the home front for Mathieu. Players often miss a day or two during training camp due to births or deaths in the family, but a prolonged absence like this is unusual. At any rate, Allen and the Saints are working to respect Mathieu’s privacy, and that’s the responsible approach to take. He’ll return when he’s ready to give the team his full attention.

Mathieu was a full participant for installs and drills in minicamp practices over the summer, and he’s been in the NFL for nearly a decade, so he isn’t missing out on as much during this first week of training camp as most players would in his position. Still, it’ll be reassuring to see him back in the lineup.

Chiefs injury, absence updates from Day 4 of training camp

#Chiefs TE Jody Fortson left practice early on Saturday with an injury. More on injuries and absences here:

The Kansas City Chiefs held their fourth full training camp practice on Saturday at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Franchise-tagged LT Orlando Brown Jr. remains absent from training camp practices and has yet to report to camp. The three players on the active/PUP list, CB Rashad Fenton, RT Lucas Niang and OL Prince Tega Wanogho, each remain on the list and absent from team practices. You might have seen a few of them working in the training tent during the course of practice, but they won’t be on the practice field for any individual or team drills.

Carlos Dunlap was not at practice on Saturday, but that was expected. The team doesn’t expect Dunlap until next Wednesday, as he’s been excused from practice to deal with some personal matters.

Later in practice, TE Jody Fortson was spotted heading over to the medical tent with a trainer. Fortson was carted up the hill in the passenger seat, which typically signifies an injury or that a player needed a bathroom break. Unfortunately, this was the prior for Fortson.

According to a team public relations representative, Fortson suffered a quad injury. The severity of the injury is unknown, but with the day off of practice on Sunday, it’s possible he’s back out there on Monday. Fortson is coming off of a season-ending Achilles injury in 2021 and has been a standout through the four training camp practices so far. Hopefully, he’s able to get back out on the field sooner rather than later.

Chiefs injury, absence updates from Day 3 of training camp

The #Chiefs had an excused absence for their newest player on Friday, but no new injuries to report on the third day of camp.

The Kansas City Chiefs held their third full training camp practice of the year on Friday at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Franchise-tagged LT Orlando Brown Jr. still hasn’t reported to training camp, and at this point, it seems like we shouldn’t expect him until later in August. As far as the active/PUP list is concerned, CB Rashad Fenton, RT Lucas Niang and OL Prince Tega Wanogho all remain on the list and absent from team practice. A few of them have been spotted with training staff in the training tent at times during practice. Steve Spagnuolo confirmed on Thursday that he has pulled Fenton onto the practice field behind the defense so that he can get “mental reps.”

As for new Chiefs DE Carlos Dunlap, he’s been excused from practice by the team. CBS Sports reporter Josina Anderson mentioned that Dunlap had an accelerated timeline on his visit to Kansas City in order to lay his father to his final resting place. Here is what Andy Reid said about his absence.

“Carlos won’t be here until next Wednesday,” Reid said.”He’s got some things that he’s got to take care of before he gets up here. He’ll work into the mix at the defensive end position. It’s a nice addition. He’s been doing this for a while and he can obviously still roll. We look forward to getting him into the mix there and getting him going.”

There were no new injuries to report during the course of practice, which is always a good thing. Justin Reid, who briefly left practice on Thursday, was back in with the first team at the onset of practice on Friday.

Chiefs injury, absence updates from Day 2 of training camp

The #Chiefs held their first open training camp practice on Thursday, and they had the majority of their players present for practice.

The Kansas City Chiefs hit their second full training camp practice of the year on Thursday, gracing the wet practice fields at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri. There was a little rain in the area, but the team was able to practice outdoors for the entire practice.

A team public relations representative updated the media, explaining that CB Rashad Fenton, RT Lucas Niang and OL Prince Tega Wanogho all remain on the active/PUP list. They did not practice on Thursday as a result.

Franchise-tagged LT Orlando Brown Jr. still hasn’t reported to training camp amidst his holdout. It’s unclear when he might report to camp, but there seems to be some expectation that he could arrive before training camp ends.

As for injuries during the course of practice, Justin Reid briefly left the field with trainers according to multiple reporters in attendance. He was spotted back on the sideline during the course of practice, but he didn’t actually participate for the rest of the day. A team public relations representative confirmed after practice that Reid is “Fine.”

Reid’s absence allowed for second-round rookie S Bryan Cook to get some work with the first-team defense for the first time during the course of training camp.

Chiefs injury, absence updates from Day 1 of training camp

The #Chiefs held their first full practice at training camp on Wednesday. There were only a few brief absences during the course of practice:

The Kansas City Chiefs hit their first full training camp practice of the year on Wednesday, once again gracing the practice fields at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Two notable absences at the onset of training camp were Frank Clark and Orlando Brown Jr., the latter absence being expected for the franchise-tagged left tackle. Clark arrived later after practice had already begun according to those in attendance and was spotted on the sideline with his helmet. It’s unclear whether he actually participated in practice.

After practice, Chiefs HC Andy Reid confirmed that Frank Clark was dealing with an illness. He was late to practice because he had to clear COVID testing.

CB Rashad Fenton, RT Lucas Niang, OL Prince Tega Wanogho and DT Cortez Broughton all remain on the active/PUP list, but RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire didn’t even last a full day on the list. He was off the PUP list and was able to participate in practice on Wednesday. Reid said that he was put on the PUP as a procedural move as he hadn’t finished his conditioning test yet.

As for injuries during the course of practice, L’Jarius Sneed briefly left the field after getting up gingerly on a play according to Arrowhead Pride’s Pete Sweeney. Second-year CB Dicaprio Bootle replaced him for a brief period in team drills, but Sneed was quickly back on the sideline with his helmet and ready to go in.

Chiefs injury, absence updates from second day of mandatory minicamp

An update on injuries and absences from Day 2 of #Chiefs mandatory minicamp.

The Kansas City Chiefs continued their three-day mandatory minicamp on Wednesday with their second practice session.

Several players were still absent from practice on Wednesday, including LT Orlando Brown Jr., DE Frank Clark, WR Justyn Ross, CB Rashad Fenton, TE Blake Bell and DE Malik Herring. Chiefs PR confirmed that Clark had been excused from the first two days of practice, but he was the only player that the team provided official word on. They’re not required to provide official injury updates this time of year.

According to several reporters in attendance, rookie CBs Trent McDuffie and Joshua Williams, who both left minicamp on Tuesday with trainers, were not on the field for Wednesday’s practice. Williams was spotted on the sidelines at practice, but McDuffie was not in attendance at all.

OT Prince Tega Wanogho was also among those absent from practice on Wednesday. OT Lucas Niang continued his rehab work for his patellar tendon injury from last season.

During the course of practice, ESPN’s Adam Teicher noted that WR Josh Gordon exited practice early accompanied by members of the training staff.

With these new absences, along with the prior ones, the Chiefs are pretty thin at the tackle and cornerback positions. Thankfully, there is only one practice session remaining.

Chiefs injury, absence updates from first day of mandatory minicamp

An update on injuries and absences from Day 1 of #Chiefs mandatory minicamp.

The Kansas City Chiefs kicked off their three-day mandatory minicamp on Tuesday with nearly full attendance from their 90-man offseason roster.

Several players were absent from practice as first reported to KSHB-TV’s Aaron Ladd. The most notable players were LT Orlando Brown Jr., DE Frank Clark, WR Justyn Ross and CB Rashad Fenton. Brown and Clark were both absent from OTAs.

Brown is currently working through contract negotiations with the team on a long-term deal. It’s not too surprising to see him staying away from practice until his contract is taken care of.

Chiefs public relations said that Clark was given permission to miss the first day of mandatory minicamp. Today (June 14) is Clark’s birthday. It’s unclear if he’ll return to practice tomorrow.

Ross was not present during the media look-in at OTA practice last week, but he was present for the team’s media production day on Monday. It’s unclear if he’s dealing with an injury and given his injury history it’s certainly something to monitor.

Finally, Fenton is still recovering from offseason shoulder surgery. There was some optimism he could be back on the field sooner than later, but it seems like we won’t be seeing Fenton until training camp.

Other players absent from practice include TE Blake Bell, DE Malik Herring and C Darryl Williams.

There seemed to be a pair of injuries during the course of practice with rookie CBs Trent McDuffie and Joshua Williams leaving early per ESPN’s Adam Teicher. He says that both players were accompanied by trainers off the field. It sounds like both injuries are considered to be minor.

Lucas Niang was present but working on the sideline during practice as he continues to rehab his torn patellar tendon from last season. The latest timeline provided for his return by the team was late training camp, so he appears to be a ways off from participating in practice in full.

Outside of Brown, it doesn’t seem like the Chiefs have any contract-related holdouts going on this year. Everyone seems to be focused on getting better ahead of the break between mandatory minicamp and training camp.

The team also had a few players returning to action after missing recent OTA practices such as Chris Jones and Mecole Hardman. Jones was training on his own during OTAs, while Hardman was dealing with a hamstring injury.

Chiefs injury, absence updates from Day 2 of training camp

#Chiefs TE Travis Kelce left practice early, walking off the field with a trainer due to back and hip tightness. More here:

The Kansas City Chiefs were back at practice on Thursday, partaking in their second training camp practice of the year.

It was a scorching hot day in St. Joseph, Missouri, touching 100 degrees on the heat index before practice even began. It made hydration all the more important for the players on the practice fields as they get back into a routine.

The Chiefs were without one new player in practice on Thursday. Linebacker Anthony Hitchens missed practice after tweaking his hamstring during Monday’s practice. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid only glossed over the injury following Monday’s practice and didn’t seem to expect it to be serious. It was at least serious enough to keep him out of practice today, with no indication of when Hitchens might return.

Rookie linebacker Nick Bolton got more repetitions at practice because of Hitchens’ absence, but not in the middle linebacker spot. Moving to the middle was veteran linebacker Ben Niemann. Taking over for Niemann at the weakside was Bolton.

Travis Kelce left practice early, walking up the hill under his own power with a trainer. He didn’t return to practice, but this seemed to be precautionary and not due to a serious injury.

“Kelce left with his back and hips, (they) were just a little tight,” Chiefs EVP of Communication Ted Crews said.

Remaining absent from practice were Darwin Thompson (COVID), James Winchester (COVID), Kyle Long (PUP), Armani Watts (PUP), Malik Herring (Non-football injury), and Nick Keizer (Non-football injury). These are all expected absences.

We’ll find out more about Kelce’s status tomorrow when the Chiefs resume practice.

Chiefs injury, absence updates from Day 1 of training camp

The #Chiefs were out at training camp, practicing for the first time today. A few players were absent and one player suffered a minor injury during practice. More here:

The Kansas City Chiefs hit their first training camp practice of the year on Wednesday, gracing the practice fields in St. Joseph, Missouri.

The team was without a few players during practice on Wednesday. According to Chiefs HC Andy Reid, two players were absent because they’ve been placed in the league’s COVID-19 protocols. We already had heard about James Winchester’s placement on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, but there was a new player added to the list too.

“Darwin Thompson and (James) Winchester, they’re both in the COVID-19 protocol,” Reid said. “We’ll just see how they finish up here.”

Thompson is entering a pivotal third season with Kansas City and any missed time is really going to hurt his chances of making this team. Remember, placement on the reserve/COVID-19 list doesn’t necessarily mean that player has tested positive. He could be back with the team anywhere from 2 to 10 days.

Reid also provided some updates on the players who were recently placed on the PUP and non-football injury list. He confirmed the injuries to Nick Keizer and Kyle Long, which had previously been unannounced.

“Malik Herring has the ACL, Nick Keizer back spasms, Kyle Long with the tibia — making good progress,” Reid said. “That’s it.”

There was one injury during practice, but it didn’t seem to be much of a big deal in Reid’s eyes.

“Hitch (Anthony Hitchens) tweaked his hamstring a bit today,” Reid concluded.

We’ll see if Hitchens is back on the field tomorrow.

Chiefs injury, absence updates from second day of mandatory minicamp

An update on injuries and absences from Day 2 of mandatory minicamp.

The Kansas City Chiefs have completed Day 2 of mandatory minicamp on Wednesday.

For the most part, things were status quo with most of the team’s 90-man offseason roster in attendance. Three players remained absent from practice as they were on Tuesday, with Martinas Rankin, Armani Watts and Kyle Long all still missing. There hasn’t been confirmation from the team on Watts and Rankin, but their absences seem to be injury-related. I wouldn’t expect those players to be fined for their minicamp absences as an injury would be a sufficient excuse.

Both DE Malik Herring (ACL) and CB DeAndre Baker (Femur) remained present at practice but sidelined with their respective injuries. They didn’t participate in OTAs and aren’t expected to get back to work prior to training camp. I wouldn’t expect Herring to participate at all given he suffered his injury at the Senior Bowl.

One new player was absent, but only for a portion of practice. As noted by Chiefs Digest’s Matt Derrick and KC Star’s Sam McDowell, offensive lineman Austin Blythe sat out of team drills during Wednesday’s practice. Hopefully, this absence isn’t injury-related as the Chiefs already seem to have some attrition along the interior offensive line with an injury to Kyle Long. That’ll be something to monitor heading into the final mandatory minicamp practice tomorrow.

Players like Frank Clark, Charvarius Ward and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, who were absent from voluntary OTA practices earlier this offseason, continued to ramp up their repetitions in their return to action. Look for Thursday’s practice to look a little more normal for each of the three returners.
