Report: Boston to lose assistant coach Aaron Miles to New Orleans Pelicans

The bench giveth, the bench taketh away, it seems.

The bench giveth, the bench taketh away, it seems. The Boston Celtics will reportedly lose another assistant coach in Aaron Miles according to recent reporting from Andscape’s Marc J. Spears. Per Spears, “Miles has agreed … (in) principle to take a similar job with the New Orleans Pelicans”.

“Miles and Pelicans head coach Willie Green worked together with the Golden State Warriors” previously, notes the Andscape reporter, with the news thinning Boston’s bench a bit after the additions of Charles Lee, Sam Cassell, Paul Pressey, and Amile Jefferson to the Celtics’ incoming cohort of assistants hired to support head coach Joe Mazzulla after a number of exits since last offseason.

It was unclear whether Boston might bring on more assistants after the Jefferson hire, but it seems probable that the Celtics could offer a job to at least one more prospective assistant before the end of summer with this news.

Report: Rockets, Ime Udoka hiring Boston’s Ben Sullivan, Aaron Miles and Mike Moser as assistants

Ime Udoka is expected to hire Celtics assistants Ben Sullivan, Aaron Miles, and Mike Moser to his new #Rockets staff, per Gary Washburn (@GwashburnGlobe) of the Boston Globe.

One week after reportedly reaching an agreement to hire Brooklyn’s Royal Ivey, the complete group of assistants to new Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka is taking shape.

With Boston now out of the 2023 playoffs, Udoka is ready to hire Celtics assistants Ben Sullivan, Aaron Miles and Mike Moser for his new staff in Houston, per Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe. All three worked for Udoka when he coached the Celtics during the 2021-22 season, which concluded with Boston reaching the NBA Finals (which they did not do this season, in Udoka’s absence).

Miles is 40 years old, while Sullivan is 39 and Moser is 32. It appears Udoka, 45, prefers a young and energetic staff, based on those additions and the recent deal with Ivey, 41.

Sullivan is known in the NBA as something of a “shooting guru,” having boosted results for players such as Boston’s Derrick White.

Sullivan and Udoka are believed to have a close relationship, according to Ari Alexander of KPRC, Houston’s NBC affiliate.

“Both grew up in the Portland, Oregon, area and are connected through the Spurs, where Sullivan was a video coordinator thanks to a suggestion from Udoka,” Alexander recently wrote. “Udoka and Sullivan’s previous boss, Mike Budenholzer, both coached under Gregg Popovich in San Antonio, and Udoka hired Sullivan away from Budenholzer’s Milwaukee Bucks staff. Sullivan is in a good situation with the Celtics, but he is an intriguing name to watch, based on that relationship.”

As for Miles, he worked as a Warriors player development coach from 2019 until 2021, which is when Udoka hired him as a Celtics assistant. He was a college point guard at Kansas from 2001 to 2005 before a lengthy professional career, which included several international stops and a brief stint in Golden State (2005-06).

Moser played internationally from 2014 through 2019 before beginning his assistant coaching career in 2019 with the Dallas Mavericks in player development and analytics. Last July, he was hired by Udoka as a player enhancement coach with the Celtics.

There is no set timetable for Udoka and the Rockets to name the complete staff. The team’s next basketball activities will not come until late June, which is when recently drafted players will take part in a minicamp to prepare for the NBA’s 2023 summer league in July.

Rockets eyeing Brooklyn’s Royal Ivey, Boston’s Ben Sullivan and Aaron Miles as assistant coaches

Brooklyn’s Royal Ivey, along with Boston’s Ben Sullivan and Aaron Miles, are among the potential pool of NBA assistant coaches for Ime Udoka in Houston, @MikeAScotto reports. #Rockets

Previous reports indicated Houston’s John Lucas and Mahmoud Abdelfattah, along with Boston’s Ben Sullivan, could be among the pool of assistants being considered for the staff of new Rockets head coach Ime Udoka.

Now, new reporting by HoopsHype’s NBA insider Michael Scotto indicates Sullivan and two other assistants with previous links to Udoka — Aaron Miles from the Celtics, where Udoka was the head coach in 2021-22, and Royal Ivey of the Brooklyn Nets, where Udoka was an assistant in the 2020-21 season — could be in play.

Scotto writes:

While the Rockets will look to reunite with (James) Harden in free agency, Houston is preparing to target potential assistant coaches to join Ime Udoka’s staff.

Keep an eye on Celtics assistant coaches Aaron Miles and Ben Sullivan and Nets assistant coach Royal Ivey to be courted by the Rockets as candidates for Udoka’s staff, league sources told HoopsHype.

Udoka and Ivey spent time together as assistants in Brooklyn during the 2020-21 season, while Miles and Sullivan were assistants on Udoka’s staff in Boston a year later.

Ivey is 41 years old, while Miles is 40 and Sullivan is 39.

Sullivan and Udoka are believed to have a close relationship, according to Ari Alexander of KPRC, Houston’s NBC affiliate.

“Both grew up in the Portland, Oregon, area and are connected through the Spurs, where Sullivan was a video coordinator thanks to a suggestion from Udoka,” Alexander writes. “Udoka and Sullivan’s previous boss, Mike Budenholzer, both coached under Gregg Popovich in San Antonio, and Udoka hired Sullivan away from Budenholzer’s Milwaukee Bucks staff. Sullivan is currently in a good situation with the Celtics but is an intriguing name to watch, based on the relationship.”

Ivey has ties to Texas, having played in college at the University of Texas from 2000 through 2004. A defensive-minded guard, Ivey played for four NBA teams over an 11-year playing career before transitioning to coaching in 2014. Since then, he’s worked as an assistant for the Nets, New York Knicks, and Oklahoma City Thunder.

There is no set timetable for Udoka to name his full staff for the 2023-24 season. However, an assistant typically leads Houston’s squad at the NBA Summer League, and practices for those begin shortly after the NBA’s draft night. This year, the draft is on June 22, so expect at least some members of Udoka’s staff to be known by then.

Report: Celtics expected to add Warriors player development coach Aaron Miles to Ime Udoka’s staff

The Celtics are reportedly expected to add Warriors player development assistant Aaron Miles to Ime Udoka’s new coaching staff in Boston.

More changes look to be coming to the Golden State Warriors coaching staff during the 2021 offseason. After moving on from longtime assistants, including Jarron Collins, and reportedly adding new faces Kenny Atkinson and Dejan Milojevic to Steve Kerr’s coaching staff, another assistant looks poised to make a move.

According to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report, the Boston Celtics are expected to add Golden State player development assistant Aaron Miles to the coaching staff.

Since Brad Stevens took over as Boston’s head of basketball operations, the Celtics have been building a staff behind new coach Ime Udoka. San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Will Hardy and University of the Pacific head coach Damon Stoudamire will join Miles on Udoka’s new staff.

Miles played with the Kansas Jayhawks before joining the Warriors as an undrafted free agent in 2005. Miles went on to play professionally overseas before re-joining the Jayhawks as an assistant coach. In 2017, he was named the head coach of Golden State’s G League affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors. In 2019, Miles was hired as a player development assistant on Kerr’s staff in Golden State.

Report: Celtics to add Warriors player development coach Aaron Miles to Ime Udoka’s staff

The Golden State assistant would join a rapidly changing coaching staff in Boston.

The Boston Celtics are poised to add Golden State Warriors player development assistant Aaron Miles to new head coach Ime Udoka‘s coaching staff according to Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer.

The Celtics have been cleaning house with regards to internal structure and organization after the retirement of former team president Danny Ainge at the end of the 2020-21 NBA season and the elevation of then-head coach Brad Stevens to that role. Much of the team’s coaching staff has since left for other jobs or not returned for the coming 2021-22 campaign, with San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Will Hardy and Pacific head coach Damon Stoudamire joining Udoka’s staff in recent weeks.

Miles is a former player who was a Warrior for one season before a successful career overseas from which he made the leap into coaching at his alma mater of Kansas.

From there he worked as an assistant at Florida Gulf Coast and as head coach of the Santa Cruz Warriors in the NBA G League before joining Golden State as a player development coach in 2019.
