Spotlight on Steelers ILB coach Aaron Curry with new additions to roster

The Steelers brought in Aaron Curry to sort rebuild the inside linebacker depth chart.

Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan spent this offseason making radical changes to the inside linebacker depth chart. After multiple changes, both additions and subtractions, the only returning player is Mark Robinson.

Another big addition related to inside linebacker is the hire of new ILB coach Aaron Curry. Curry has been handed a clean slate of veteran players, a team with a reputation for a dominant defense and the expectation this group will be greatly improved this season.

The best approach for Curry might be to utilize the particular skill sets of a rather diverse group and create packages for situational football. The team has Cole Holcomb who is highly athletic and should be the lead linebacker on the team, playing the bulk of the snaps. He will be the guy who rarely leaves the field.

But building off from Holcomb, you have Elandon Roberts, Kwon Alexander, Mark Robinson and Tanner Must. For Curry, he has to figure out which guys work best under which situations and create a seamless rotation of guys. This will require a tremendous amount of communication and leadership from guys like safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and linebacker T.J. Watt.

This group might not be elite but it certainly has the potential to no longer be the weak link on defense. This has been the problem for the past several seasons. We are optimistic Curry will bring out the best in this group and find a mix of players to improve the defense.

2023 NFL draft: Seahawks haven’t picked this high since 2009

The Seahawks drafted linebacker Aaron Curry, who many argue became the biggest draft bust Seattle ever had.

The 12th Man needs to appreciate this next sentence: the Seattle Seahawks are in near-uncharted territory with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Seattle drafting this high is, thankfully, not a common occurrence. Even taking out the three Super Bowl years (2005, 2013, 2014) the Seahawks have been among one of the most consistently winning teams in the 21st Century.

Even their No. 5 position this year was not due to their play, but rather the abysmal season the Denver Broncos suffered.

The last time Seattle had a draft pick this high, or higher, was in the 2009 NFL Draft. The Seahawks had one of the worst seasons in franchise history, finishing 4-12 in Mike Holmgren’s final year in the Pacific Northwest. For this draft, Seattle had “earned” the No. 4 overall pick.

The Seahawks drafted linebacker Aaron Curry, who many argue became the biggest draft bust Seattle ever had.

Curry was widely expected to be a franchise altering, “can’t-miss” prospect. However, Curry did not live up to the lofty expectations that came with being a 4th overall draft selection. By his third year, Curry had lost his starting spot to K.J. Wright, who obviously became one of the best linebackers to ever wear a Seahawks uniform.

In truth, Curry was not an abysmal player, he simply wasn’t a difference maker at an important position. Here’s hoping whomever Seattle drafts this spring makes more of an immediate impact for the fall.

Steelers add ex-Giants LB Aaron Curry to coaching staff

The Pittsburgh Steelers are adding retired New York Giants linebacker Aaron Curry to their coaching staff.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are hiring retired New York Giants linebacker Aaron Curry as a defensive assistant. He will replace Brian Flores, who joined the Minnesota Vikings this offseason, as the team’s linebackers coach.

Curry, who was a first-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks in 2009, signed with the Giants in May of 2013. However, he was released as a part of early cuts that August and announced his retirement from the NFL just three days later.

In addition to his time with the Seahawks and Giants, Curry also played for the then-Oakland Raiders from 2011-2012.

Following his retirement from football, Curry quickly pivoted to coaching. He first served as a graduate assistant for the Charlotte 49ers and was promoted to defensive line coach after just one year.

In 2019, Curry was hired by the Seahawks. He spent his first season serving as a coaching assistant and the previous two years serving as a defensive assistant.

Over the course of his playing career, Curry appeared in 48 games (39 starts) and recorded 203 tackles (18 for a loss), 19 QB hits, 5.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, and 12 passes defensed.
