Multiple former Ravens players won the USFL championship with the Birmingham Stallions

The players that the Baltimore Ravens have brought in over the course of their organizational history. Some have turned into franchise cornerstones, other have had solid careers and some have moved onto other things shortly after their NFL journeys began.

For three former Baltimore players, they were able to secure a championship in the inaugural season of The United States Football League. Playing for the Birmingham Stallions, defensive tackle Willie Henry, defensive end Aaron Adeoye and wide receiver Michael Dereus were on the winning side, securing the first championship in the league’s history.

Henry was a fourth-round pick of Baltimore during the 2016 NFL draft, and played for the Ravens for two seasons. He totaled 36 tackles and 4.5 sacks during his time with the organization.

Adeoye spent the 2019 and 2020 seasons on Baltimore’s practice squad, while Dereus spent parts of the 2020 and 2021 off-seasons with the Ravens.

Adeoye was the third pick in the second round of the 2022 USFL draft for Birmingham, while Henry and Dereus signed with the Stallions in April.

The NFL has been the pinnacle of football for years. However, there have been many other leagues that have come and gone, and on Tuesday a new league held their draft as teams began to fill out their rosters.

The United States Football League (or USFL), held the first day of their 2022 draft, which consisted of 12 rounds. Multiple former Baltimore Ravens players were selected over the course of the night, including quarterback Kenji Bahar, edge Aaron Adeoye, and cornerbacks Mazzi Wilkins as well as Terrell Bonds.

Jets sign reinforcements, place Carl Lawson on injured reserve

The Jets signed DE Aaron Adeoye and OT Isaiah Williams after putting Carl Lawson on IR and waiving Corey Ballentine.

The Jets officially placed Carl Lawson on season-ending injured reserve Monday after the edge rusher suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon last week.

Additionally, the team signed defensive end Aaron Adeoye and offensive tackle Isaiah Williams and waived cornerback/return specialist Corey Ballentine.

Adeoye was a 2016 undrafted free agent out of Southeast Missouri State who didn’t see NFL action until this past season. He played eight snaps in one game for the Ravens. He played for the Salina Liberty of Champions Indoor Football in 2017 before spending time in the Spring League and Alliance of American Football in 2019.

Williams joins the Jets after being waived by the 49ers earlier this month. He mostly played on San Francisco’s practice squad before being elevated to the active roster in Week 15 and 17 last year. Williams originally signed with Washington as an undrafted free agent in 2016. He jumped between Washington, the Chiefs, the Raiders, the Saints and the Ravens from 2016-2019. He also played for the AAF’s Atlanta Legends and the XFL’s Tampa Bay Vipers.

The Jets also worked out former Washington tackle Timon Parris and former Vikings pass rusher Jordan Brailford, according to Aaron Wilson.

Ravens waive three players, place two on injured reserve

Ravens waive three players, place two on injured reserve

The Baltimore Ravens have a huge amount of depth at multiple positions on their roster this offseason. While it’s a great to have a plethora of playmakers, it will make for some tough decisions over the coming weeks as rosters get trimmed down to 53 players.

The first roster deadline comes on Tuesday, as by August 17th at 4PM EST teams must trim their roster to 85 players. Baltimore took steps towards doing that, waiving three players while placing another two on injured reserve.

Adeoye and Wolf both spent the 2020 season on the Ravens’ practice squad, while Harris was brought in during the midway point of last season, playing in four games for the team. Marshall will spend his third straight season on injured reserve as he’s only played in three games during his three year NFL career. Dorsey got hurt in practice last week, and now won’t see the field during the 2021 season.

Baltimore also signed quarterback Kenji Bahar in the wake of Trace McSorley’s back injury, which will keep him out multiple weeks.

With the three players waived, two placed on injured reserve and one signed, the Ravens’ roster currently stands at 86 players, so it looks like they’ll have to make one more move before Tuesday’s deadline.

Ravens protect 3 OL, 1 LB on practice squad in Week 1

The Baltimore Ravens protected two offensive linemen, a linebacker and long snapper Nick Moore for Week 1 of the 2020 NFL season.

An extra wrinkle has been added to the 2020 NFL season in the form of a new practice squad rule. Teams can now protect up to four practice squad players from getting poached by other teams. The Baltimore Ravens took advantage of the new rule to ensure they keep a few key players.

According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the Ravens protected the following four players:

  1. LB Aaron Adeoye
  2. C Trystan Colon-Castillo
  3. G Will Holden
  4. LS Nick Moore

The decision to protect both Holden and Colon-Castillo isn’t much of a shocker.

While listed as a guard, Holden would actually be a tackle for Baltimore. Considering their lack of depth — rookie Tyre Phillips is the only listed backup for both Ronnie Stanley and Orlando Brown Jr. — keeping him with the team for another week is a wise move. Colon-Castillo is similarly fitting with starting center Matt Skura returning from a gruesome knee injury that sent him to injured reserve last season. With limited depth behind him, protecting Colon-Castillo is just a little added insurance in case Skura isn’ actually ready to go yet.

The real interesting decision is at long snapper with Baltimore protecting Moore. There are few teams in the league that value special teams as much as the Ravens but protecting a long snapper when they have a proven guy in Morgan Cox is a head-scratcher. It could be that Baltimore really loves what they’ve seen out of Moore and have long-term plans for him, or it could be that Cox has been quietly battling some type of injury and they want a little depth at the position without spending a roster spot.

It’ll be interesting to see how this list changes from week to week this season to pick up on any potential patterns the Ravens have that might hint at their strategy.
