Kelly Oubre Jr. can’t wait to wreak ‘havoc’ with Andrew Wiggins in Golden State

As teammates with the Golden State Warriors, Kelly Oubre Jr. can’t wait to wreak “havoc” with fellow Kansas Jayhawk product Andrew Wiggins.

Although 2020-21 will be Kelly Oubre Jr., and Andrew Wiggins first season as teammates for the Golden State Warriors, the duo shares something in common. Before jumping to the NBA level, Oubre Jr. and Wiggins each played for Bil Self at the University of Kansas.

Before getting drafted with the first overall pick in 2014, Wiggins tallied 17.1 points on 44.8% shooting from the field with 5.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.2 steals during his only season for the Jayhawks.

One year later, Oubre Jr. earned Big 12 All-Freshman honors while averaging 9.3 points on 44.4% shooting from the field with five rebounds and 1.1 steals per game.

Despite not playing together in Lawerence, Oubre Jr. said he shares a connection with Wiggins. During a training camp press conference with media, Oubre Jr. spoke about meeting Wiggins at his Kansas college visit.

He’s a great dude. He’s very low key like myself. We get to connect in being introverts. It’s really a great feeling to finally be able to play with him. When I went on my visit to Kansas, he was there, obviously. And I got to talk to him and just ask him some questions to pick his brain. Now that we’re on the same side — we’ve always had that bond and that connection that we can just continue to follow through with.

When asked about “creating havoc” with Wiggins on the wing in Golden State, Oubre Jr. said he “can’t wait.”

Havoc. I can’t wait to wreak it with my boy.

Without Klay Thompson, Steve Kerr and the Golden State Warriors will likely lean on Oubre Jr. and Wiggins to fill the five-time All-Star’s scoring and defensive role.

During Golden State’s preseason training camp, Oubre Jr. and Wiggins will have the opportunity to build on the chemistry the duo initially created with their Kansas connection.

Andrew Wiggins shares he’s put on ‘a couple of pounds of muscle’ during Warriors offseason

During the Golden State Warriors extended offseason, Andrew Wiggins admitted to adding “a couple of pounds of muscle” to his 6-foot-7 frame.

During the Golden State Warriors extended offseason period, multiple videos and photos were shared of Andrew Wiggins working in the gym. The former Rookie of the Year was practicing his drives to the bucket, long-distance shooting and more.

When Wiggins wasn’t on the court refining his game, it looks like the 25-year-old was hitting the weights. On Wednesday, the Warriors shared a bevy of photos as players return to Chase Center for the start of preseason training camp.

In one photo, it’s easy to spot the layer of new muscles on Wiggins’ arms. In a press conference with Bay Area media, the small forward was asked about his offseason workout plan. Wiggins admitted to gaining “a couple of” pounds of muscle.

I put on a couple of pounds of muscle. Just a couple of pounds. Just a few. I definitely feel stronger. I feel faster, stronger. I feel good. Coming into the season, I feel the best I’ve ever felt ever.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Wiggins’ first run of action with the Golden State Warriors was limited to only 12 games. During that span, Wiggins averaged 19.4 points on 45.7% shooting from the field with 4.6 boards, 3.6 assists, 1.4 blocks and 1.3 steals per contest.

With Klay Thompson set to miss the entire season with a torn Achilles, the Warriors will likely lean on Wiggins over his first full season in the Bay Area.

Wiggins will have the rest of training camp to build chemistry with Steph Curry, Draymond Green, Kelly Oubre Jr., and James Wiseman before the season begins on Dec. 22 against the Brooklyn Nets.

Along with individual workouts, Wiggins has lined up against other NBA players for a 1-on-1 drill.

Following a long-offseason, Wiggins will have his first opportunity to officially join both Klay Thompson and Steph Curry on the court at the same time during Golden State’s preseason training camp.

Wiggins only played one game with Curry last season and zero with Thompson as both Splash Brothers dealt with injuries throughout Golden State’s 2019-20 campaign.

How Wiggins meshes with Curry and Thompson on the court will play a significant factor in Golden State’s chances of returning to the top of the Western Conference.

During his first stint in Golden State, Wiggins tallied 19.4 points on 45.7% shooting from the field with 4.6 boards, 3.6 assists, 1.4 blocks and 1.3 steals per contest.

Steve Kerr says Andrew Wiggins ‘fits right in’ with what the Warriors are trying to do

In an interview on The Bill Simmons Podcast, Steve Kerr praised Andrew Wiggins’ fit with the Warriors, calling him “a damn good player.”

Following the trade deadline, the arrival of Andrew Wiggins in the Bay Area was a focal point in the Golden State Warriors’ stretch run of the 2019-20 season.

However, when the season was put on hold due to the coronavirus, Wiggins’ opening stint in Golden State was cut short. With the Warriors one of the eight teams on the outside of the Orlando Bubble, the former Minnesota Timberwolves wing was limited to 12 games, averaging 19.4 points on 45.7% shooting from the field with 4.6 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game.

Although it was only a handful of games, Wiggins made a solid first impression on his new head coach. In a recent appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast, Steve Kerr spoke about Golden State’s trade for the former first overall pick. Kerr had high praise for Wiggins fit with Golden State on the defensive end.

Via The Bill Simmons Podcast:

I wasn’t surprised at all about what we saw because I’ve coached against him [Wiggins] now for the last six years and he’s had big games against us.

The biggest thing for us was all about what you need today to win games. The game has changed so much. And it’s so hard to guard. I watched Houston – Dallas the other night, and it was, 151-148 — How do you guard anybody? There’s nobody in the paint; you got 10 guys who could shoot threes, penetrate and kick. So you got to have size and versatility on the wings.

And you think about our roster, losing Kevin Durant, Andre Iguodala, Shaun Livingston, those guys obviously for good. Two to retirement and one to free agency, then Klay Thompson for the year. That’s basically our main wing core defensively. Those guys represented, along with Draymond, everything that not only we’ve been about over the last five-six years, but what the league has turned into — multi-positional defenders who can complement one another and guard their position, but also guard two or three other positions.

Andrew has the size and athleticism to do exactly that. And we knew that. And he was an excellent defender for us during the last stretch and played really well offensively. He may not be an MVP candidate, but he’s a damn good player, and he fits right in with what we’re trying to do. He gives us some of that defensive versatility that we lost with all those defections.

The Kansas Jayhawk product was active on the defensive side of the floor in Golden State, averaging 1.4 blocks and 1.3 steals per contest. In his first pair of games with the Warriors, Wiggins recorded new career highs in steals (5) and blocks (4).

[lawrence-related id=28025]

With Golden State’s extended offseason on deck, Wiggins will have time to get familiar with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson on the floor. Wiggins was in the lineup for Curry’s much-anticipated return from injury. In his only game alongside the two-time MVP, Wiggins tallied a double-double with 21 points and 10 boards.

[lawrence-related id=22952]

If Wiggins clicks with a healthy edition of the Splash Brothers in 2020-21, Golden State will have a steadier climb back to the Western Conference postseason.
