Former Michigan State basketball PG A.J. Hoggard transferring to Vanderbilt

As many predicted, A.J. Hoggard is heading to the SEC:

After a few weeks of speculation, former Michigan State basketball point guard A.J. Hoggard has officially announced that he will be heading to the SEC. As I predicted earlier today, Hoggard will head to Vanderbilt for his final year of college eligibility.

There were some rumors that Vanderbilt put together quite a bit of NIL money to lure Hoggard to the SEC.

Michigan State basketball PG A.J. Hoggard officially enters NCAA transfer portal

A.J. Hoggard has officially entered the transfer portal

Tom Izzo made it clear last week that if A.J. Hoggard decided to return to play more college basketball, it wouldn’t be with Michigan State basketball, so it wasn’t a major surprise on Friday when Hoggard officially entered the NCAA transfer portal.

It will be interesting to see what Hoggard does this offseason. After a stellar 2022-23 campaign, Hoggard seemingly took a stepback last year, with his numbers going down in many categories. Some thought Hoggard might try to pursue some level of pro basketball, but it looks like he is content to go after some of the NIL money that is out there for experienced players like himself.

Tom Izzo: A.J. Hoggard will not return to Michigan State basketball

Tom Izzo: A.J. Hoggard will not return to Michigan State basketball

In a recent, illuminating radio interview, Tom Izzo gave some much-requested clarity around his program as it currently stands. While there are still plenty of question-marks, it doesn’t appear that A.J. Hoggard is one of them, as far as MSU is concerned.

Izzo said that Hoggard is currently exploring a professional basketball career. Then added the following:

“He could go back to college. It wouldn’t be here,” Izzo said.

That seems pretty resolute. Izzo seems ready to give the reins to Jeremy Fears Jr. and Tre Holloman and refresh his roster for another run.

It’s senior night for Michigan State basketball, and it is set to be an emotional evening for the Spartans as they send off their seniors while also fighting tooth and nail to secure their spot in the NCAA tournament.

WATCH: Michigan State point guard A.J. Hoggard holding his own against NBA competition

A.J. Hoggard has drawn some attention from draft analysts after managing to hang with NBA competition

If there has ever been a case for a player sticking around with a program and giving himself time to develop, it’s A.J. Hoggard. The former No. 101 ranked player in the 2020 recruiting class is finally coming into his own at Michigan State, and looks poised for a huge breakout season for the Spartans.

Recently, Hoggard was playing with some NBA talent at the CP3 elite guard camp, and not only hung with some NBA players, but stood out enough to draw some praise from ESPN draft analyst Jonathan Givony.

Over the past few years, we have heard a lot about Hoggard and his development. Hoggard has a great feel and plays physical, inspired basketball, but needed to work on his body, shooting and defensive skills, and it looks like it’s finally coming together for the MSU point guard heading into a much-hyped season.

Jaden Akins, A.J. Hoggard withdraw from NBA draft, will return to Michigan State basketball

Jaden Akins, A.J. Hoggard withdrawing from NBA draft, will return to Michigan State

The last domino for the 2023-24 Michigan State basketball roster has fallen. On Wednesday, Chris Solari broke the news that was then confirmed by the official MSU basketball Twitter account that Jaden Akins and A.J. Hoggard were withdrawing from the 2023 NBA draft and returning to East Lansing for another season.

The return of Akins and Hoggard should cement the Spartans as a preseason top-10 team that will be considered to be one of the betting favorites to make a Final Four run next season.

REPORT: MSU Basketball PG A.J. Hoggard out after undergoing meniscus surgery

A.J. Hoggard reportedly had meniscus surgery a few weeks ago but should still be ready for the start of the season, Jon Rothstein reports.

Michigan State basketball freshman point guard A.J. Hoggard reportedly had meniscus surgery a few weeks ago but should still be ready for the start of the season.

Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reported the injury news after speaking with head coach Tom Izzo.

Hoggard — who was ranked as the No. 74 overall prospect in the 2020 class by 247Sports — is expected to contend with Foster Loyer for the starting point guard position this upcoming season. With Hoggard out for the past two weeks, I’d now expect Loyer to get the nod as the starter to begin the season.

Rothstein also reported that Izzo “raved about Foster Loyer’s progression” during his conversation with the Spartans’ head coach, but that the point guard position is still not set.
