Watch: Mooney Ward rips ball away from Vikings’ rookie Jordan Addison for interception

Mooney Ward got the party started early on Monday Night Football with a highlight-reel interception in Minnesota.

It didn’t take long for the San Francisco 49ers’ defense to make an impact on Monday Night Football against the Minnesota Vikings. On the opening drive of the game, Kirk Cousins connected with rookie Jordan Addison.

However, Charvarius “Mooney” Ward welcomed the young pass catcher to the league by ripping the ball from his hands for an interception in favor of the 49ers.

Ward’s early interception gave the 49ers a starting field position in Vikings territory for Brock Purdy’s first time on the field on Monday Night Football.

49ers promote two players from practice squad before Monday Night Football vs. Vikings

49ers promote pair of players to active roster from practice before meeting the Vikings on Monday Night Football in Santa Clara.

With multiple key players set to miss Monday Night Football due to injuries, the San Francisco 49ers promoted a pair of players from the practice squad before hosting the Vikings in Santa Clara.

Cornerback Shemar Jean-Charles and wide receiver Chris Conley will join the 49ers active roster on Monday Night Football against the Vikings. This will be Jean-Charles’ third elevation this season and Conley’s second.

Before Jean-Charles joined the 49ers, the former App State defensive back played 21 games with the Green Bay Packers since 2021. Jean-Charles was drafted in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL draft by Green Bay.

Conley has spent nine seasons in the NFL, primarily with the Kansas City Chiefs. He’s also had stops in Jacksonville and Houston. He will provide depth to the 49ers’ pass-catching unit that will be without Deebo Samuel on Monday Night.

Kickoff against the Vikings is set for 5:15 p.m PT on Monday night.

Report: All-Pro OL Trent Williams (ankle) won’t play vs. Vikings on Monday Night Football

The All-Pro offensive lineman has been dealing with an ankle injury.

With Deebo Samuel already ruled out, the San Francisco 49ers could be without another key piece on offense for Monday Night Football against the Minnesota Vikings.

After missing practice for most of the week, All-Pro offensive tackle Trent Williams has been listed as doubtful for Monday Night Football in Santa Clara.

In an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Williams will not play against the Vikings due to his ankle injury. While Samuel and Williams won’t play, Christian McCaffrey (oblique) will be on the field on Monday Night, per Schefter.

Kickoff for the 49ers and Vikings primetime showdown on Monday Night Football is set for 5:15 p.m. PT in the Bay Area.

Report: Vikings won’t have superstar WR Justin Jefferson vs. 49ers

The #49ers may avoid facing WR Justin Jefferson in Week 7.

The 49ers are likely to avoid perhaps the best offensive player on their schedule. NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero on Tuesday reported the Vikings are placing wide receiver Justin Jefferson on injured reserve because of a hamstring strain.

Jefferson caught only three balls for 28 yards in Minnesota’s Week 5 loss to the Chiefs and played just 71 percent of the team’s offensive snaps – his lowest number in a non-Week 18 game since Week 7 of the 2021 season.

Instead of trying to battle through the injury, Jefferson will go on IR with no specific timeline for his return. Going on IR will keep him out for at least four weeks, which will include the 49ers and Vikings Week 7 showdown on Monday Night Football.

Jefferson led the NFL in receptions and receiving yards last season, and won the Offensive Player of the Year award. He was putting together another nice year for the 1-4 Vikings with 36 catches for 571 yards and three touchdowns.

49ers OL Alfredo Gutierrez gets game ball after NFL debut

Alfredo Gutierrez debuted for the 49ers vs. the Vikings and earned a game ball for his efforts.

49ers offensive lineman Alfredo Gutierrez made his NFL debut Saturday vs. the Vikings and earned a game ball for his efforts.

Gutierrez joined San Francisco last season through the NFL’s international pathway program. He’s a native of Mexico and spent last offseason with the 49ers and then was on the practice squad for the full season. International pathway players aren’t allowed to make the active roster and don’t count toward the 90-man roster or practice squad roster.

He lined up at left tackle on the final series and got out on the move as a lead blocker on a toss play before the 49ers kneeled out the clock to secure a 17-7 win.

“Finally! Pretty cool, man. Pretty cool,” Gutierrez told Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group after the game. “I love it. I love the feeling.”

Gutierrez told media in the locker room after the game his nerves kicked in when he stepped on the field.

I was pretty nervous,” Gutierrez said. “Like I said, I was like, shaking. But that was awesome that Coach Shanahan gave me the ball. That means a lot to me.”

The likelihood Gutierrez makes the club is nil, but the club could elect to keep him on the practice squad again this year depending on how they feel about his development over the last couple years.

Either way, it’s a great moment for Gutierrez. He’ll have another chance to see more action in the 49ers’ preseason finale Thursday in Houston.

Watch: Tayler Hawkins seals 49ers win vs. Vikings with interception

Watch: Tayler Hawkins seals 49ers win over Vikings with interception. 2-0!

The Vikings had a chance to score late to make Saturday’s game interesting. Then Kellen Mond happened. Minnesota’s backup quarterback floated a deep shot for the end zone that fell well short of the intended target and made for an easy game-sealing interception for 49ers undrafted rookie Tayler Hawkins. The 49ers ran out the clock from there.

Thoughts and notes from 49ers Week 2 preseason game vs. Vikings

The 49ers’ 2nd preseason game has come to an end. Our thoughts:

The 49ers moved to 2-0 in the postseason with their 17-7 win over the Vikings on Saturday night in Minnesota.

It was a defensive slugfest that matched the tenor of the joint practices the teams ran together Wednesday and Thursday before the game. Both defensive lines dominated, but a couple 49ers takeaways were the difference.

Here are some thoughts from the second preseason contest:

Watch: Nate Sudfeld throws dart to JaMycal Hasty for TD

Can’t stop Nate Sudfeld/JaMycal Hasty.

The 49ers grabbed a lead on the first play of the fourth quarter Saturday in Minnesota. Quarterback Nate Sudfeld on a third-and-goal stepped up under pressure and threw a strike to running back JaMycal Hasty who’d run a good route out of the backfield. Sudfeld then hit wide receiver Danny Gray on the two-point conversion to give the 49ers a 14-7 lead.

2 49ers injuries crop up vs. Vikings

A couple 49ers injury notes from the second preseason game.

A couple 49ers injuries popped up in their lead up to and during Saturday’s preseason game vs. the Vikings.

Cornerback Ambry Thomas hurt his knee and didn’t suit up for Saturday’s game per ESPN’s Nick Wagoner. He wasn’t on the list of players not playing, but he got injured during Thursday’s joint practice with Minnesota. The severity of that ailment is unknown. It’s not a surprise San Francisco isn’t pushing him into action with another preseason game just five days away.

Then during the game the club lost wide receiver Austin Mack to a hamstring injury. Hamstring issues have plagued the club on both sides of the ball over the last couple weeks of training camp.

Watch: Javon Kinlaw dominates Vikings RG for sack

Whew. Javon Kinlaw flashed the athleticism inside that made him a 1st-round pick when he flew in for a sack vs. the Vikings. Check it out:

The 49ers need a good year from defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw, and they got a great rep from him Saturday night vs. the Vikings. He was lined up one-on-one vs. the Vikings right guard and made one slip inside to get through him and to quarterback Kellen Mond for a third-down sack. Kinlaw is going to get a ton of one-on-one matchups on the interior this year, so seeing him win a rep like that one is significant for San Francisco.
