NFL ‘looked into’ 49ers handling of Christian McCaffrey injury status

Prior to the 49ers’ season opener, the All-Pro running back was listed as inactive against the Jets.

Shortly before the start of the San Francisco 49ers’ season opener against the New York Jets on Monday Night Football, Christian McCaffrey was listed as inactive due to an ankle/Achilles injury.

McCaffrey was initially listed as questionable for Monday’s tilt with the Jets after participating in practice on a limited basis during the week.

After the game, McCaffrey’s backup, Jordan Mason was asked when he found out he’d be starting in place of the All-Pro running back.

Coming off a breakout performance, Mason mentioned he’d found out on Friday he would be starting. When speaking to reporters after the game, Kyle Shanahan said he’d never told Mason he would be starting on Monday against the Jets.

Before Week 2, the NFL looked into the 49ers reporting of McCaffrey’s injury status. In a statement released on Friday, the 49ers didn’t violate the NFL injury status rules according to the NFL.

No egos in 49ers RB room after backup’s huge game

Christian McCaffrey had praise for Jordan Mason’s breakout perfromance against the Jets on Monday Night Football.

With Christian McCaffrey missing Monday Night Football against the New York Jets, Kyle Shanahan’s offense leaned on backup running back Jordan Mason. In the season opener on primetime television, the undrafted running back out of Georgia Tech delivered a career-best performance.

Mason rumbled all over the Jets, dominating with a career-high 147 yards rushing with a touchdown on the way to leading the 49ers to their first win of the 2024 campaign, 32-19.

Following the game, the 49ers All-Pro rusher had nothing but praise for his teammate’s breakout effort against the Jets. McCaffrey told reporters in Santa Clara that he was proud of Mason.

I think with someone like him, man. I’m so proud of him. When you’re in a rhythm, you’re in a grove, you let him be. And he showed that. I was so pumped for him. Just everything he’s done all camp. He’s earned that and he balled out and it showed.

Congratulated him. We got a special room. He’s right there in the play and someone that is going to help this team a lot this year. I’m happy he’s in our room. We’re happy for him.

Brock Purdy’s best throw vs. Jets was an incompletion

In the regular-season opener, Purdy threw for 231 yards on 19-of-29 passing against the Jets.

In the first game of the regular season, Brock Purdy picked up right where he left off, cruising to 231 yards passing on 19-of-29 passing against Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets.

The only thing Purdy didn’t do was throw a touchdown. However, his best throw of the day should have gone for a score at the end of the first half.

With seconds ticking off the clock at the end of the second quarter and the 49ers driving in the red zone, Purdy floated a beautiful pass to the back of the endzone for Brandon Aiyuk. Instead of coming down with the pass for six points, Aiyuk uncharacteristically dropped the ball forcing the 49ers to settle for a field goal at the end of the half.

After the game, Aiyuk spoke about the pass from Purdy that resulted in a drop. The 49ers star receiver admitted Purdy’s pass was a “dime.”

Following an eventful offseason, Aiyuk had a slow start to his 2024 campaign, securing only two receptions for 28 yards against the Jets. Despite Aiyuk’s rusty performance, the 49ers still rolled to a 32-19 win over the Jets on Monday Night Football.

49ers defensive leader expected breakout game from unheralded RB

The Georgia Tech product rushed for a career-high 147 yards on Monday night against the Jets.

Monday Night Football between the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers marked the arrival of Jordan Mason. With Christian McCaffrey ruled out before kickoff due to an ankle/Achilles, Mason didn’t just fill in but thrived in the 49ers backfield.

Mason fueled the 49ers offense, surging to a career-high 147 yards with a touchdown on 28 carries. The Georgia Tech product hammered the Jets defense with a flurry of powerful runs through the belly of New York’s front seven.

Following the game, Fred Warner was asked about Mason. The 49ers defensive captain wasn’t surprised by the undrafted running back’s performance on Monday against the Jets.

I know it sounds silly, but I truly do expect that of him. I love the fact that he trained here this offseason — chose to train here with me and some of the other linebackers, Flan and Curtis. We compete here. Even in the offseason, I saw him with a different mindset that he was going to be ready for his moment when it did come. All training camp he got a lot of reps obviously with Christian out. Even though I’m not tackling him to the ground, I could still feel the physicality and seeing it throughout the preseason. He was ready for his moment. I’m so happy for him.

Regardless of when McCaffrey will be available next, Mason has deservingly carved out some sort of role in Shanahan’s offense. If McCaffrey can’t return by Sunday, Mason will likely see a heavy workload again in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings.

Hall of Fame QB furious with 49ers WR after drop

Following a drop at the end of the first half against the Jets, a Hall of Fame quarterback wasn’t happy with a 49ers pass catcher.

With the San Francisco 49ers driving at the end of the first half against the New York Jets on the first Monday Night Football of the new 2024 season, Brock Purdy floated a perfectly placed ball into the corner of the endzone for Brandon Aiyuk.

However, instead of snarring the ball for a touchdown, the ball bounced off of Aiyuk’s extended hands for a disappointing drop. While it would’ve been a tough, diving catch, Aiyuk was able to get his hands on the ball. A catch he would normally secure.

After the drop, the 49ers settled for a field goal in the final seconds of the first half to extend their lead against the Jets.

Following Aiyuk’s drop, a Hall of Fame quarterback wasn’t happy with the recently paid pass catcher. During ESPN’s alternate “Manning Cast,” Peyton Manning was critical of Aiyuk for missing training camp. Both Peyton and Eli Manning praised Purdy’s throw on second down.

Via @Deadspin on Twitter:

Aiyuk notably “held-in” during training camp and missed all of the preseason as he awaited a contract extension. Aiyuk signed his new massive contract extension just over a week out of the season opener on Monday night against the Jets.

Through the first half, Aiyuk only recorded one catch for 14 yards against the Jets.

49ers lean on do-everything WR for 1st TD of 2024

Deebo Samuel got the 49ers on the board with their first touchdown of the 2024 campaign.

With Christian McCaffrey ruled out before kickoff for Monday Night Football against the New York Jets, Kyle Shanahan’s offense needed someone to step up. Throughout the first half of the regular season opener, the 49ers’ versatile weapon Deebo Samuel was heavily involved out of the backfield.

However, through the first quarter and multiple drives, the 49ers couldn’t find the endzone, settling for two field goals. However, in the second quarter, the 49ers got on the board for the first time in the 2024 season, thanks to their do-everything wide receiver.

Following multiple penalties in the red zone on a long drive that included multiple impressive runs from Jordan Mason, Samuel was the one to punch in the 49ers’ first touchdown of the 2024 campaign. Samuel took the ball on a sweep around the right edge for a short touchdown.

Last season, Samuel punched in five touchdowns on 37 attempts from the backfield.

Watch: Fred Warner forces first turnover of season with punch vs. Jets’ Breece Hall

It didn’t take long for Fred Warner to make an impact in the 49ers season opener against the Jets.

After a 3-and-out on offense to start the regular season, the San Francisco 49ers leaned on their defense to provide a spark on Monday Night Football against the New York Jets. The 49ers captain delivered.

It didn’t take long for Fred Warner to make an impact against the Jets. After Aaron Rodgers flipped a short pass to running back Breece Hall, Warner came flying in to punch the ball out of the former Iowa State rusher’s hands. Following Warner’s punch, new 49er defensive tackle Maliek Collins pounced on the forced fumble to secure the turnover.
